Covered Call ETFs With No NAV Erosion? Price Kept vs Paid Out, All Checked

A high yield says how much a fund pays out, not where the money comes from. Covered-call funds sell options and pay out the premiums, which caps how much their shares can gain in a rising market; when the market falls, the shares fall with it. Over time, many of them pay out a lot while their share price slowly drifts down. Investors call that “NAV erosion”.

For someone living on the income, that matters more than the yield. This page puts the two side by side for every option-income fund and every other fund yielding 7% or more: what the share price did since the fund’s price history starts, what it paid out over the same time as a share of the starting price, and the two together, the result with every payout spent.

Option-income funds on indexes and baskets

Funds whose filings describe an options strategy: most sell calls on the S&P 500, the Nasdaq-100, the Russell 2000 or a basket of stocks and pay out the premiums; a few use options on bonds or volatility. How option-income funds work.

148 funds: 100 kept or grew their share price since the start of their price history, and 4 lost half or more. The median price change was +9.9%.
With every payout spent, the best result was SECT (+198.8% since Sep 6, 2017) and the worst BNDD (-17.3% since Sep 22, 2021).
Of the 64 funds with four years of payouts, 29 paid less over the last 12 months than in the same 12 months three years earlier.

Reading the erosion figures

Price stands in for NAV

An ETF’s share price stays close to its net asset value, so the price change here is the NAV change, give or take a fraction of a percent.

A falling price isn’t always a loss

A fund can lose part of its price and still have returned more in cash than it lost. The “income spent” column adds the two: above zero, the payouts covered the fall.

Spending shrinks the income

When the price falls, the same yield pays fewer dollars. Someone spending every payout ends up with less invested and, usually, a smaller check: the “income, 3 yr” column shows it.

Short histories

Many of these funds are only a few years old and haven’t lived through a long bear market. Every figure says when it starts; funds with less than a year of prices are left out.

Questions investors ask

What is NAV erosion?

A steady fall in a fund’s net asset value (and so its share price) while it keeps paying high distributions. It usually means the fund is paying out more than its holdings earn after the options it sells cap their gains, so part of each payout comes out of the shares.

Do all covered-call ETFs have NAV erosion?

No. Funds that sell options on only part of the portfolio, or further from the current price, keep more of the market’s gains, and some have kept or grown their price. Funds that sell options on the whole portfolio at the current price, and single-stock funds, tend to lose the most.

Is NAV erosion a problem if I reinvest the payouts?

Less so: with payouts reinvested, what counts is the total return, shown on each fund’s page. Erosion matters most when you spend the income, because you are left with fewer dollars invested and smaller checks.

How is this different from total return?

How we built this list

Which funds: ETFs whose filings show an options strategy, plus funds that paid at least four distributions in the 12 months to Oct 27, 2026 adding up to 7% or more of their price, other than bond, leveraged, inverse and commodity funds. Funds with less than a year of prices are left out.
Price change: the share price without distributions, from the first price in our data (shown under “Since”) to the latest; payments before a share split are adjusted.
Paid out: distributions over the same time, as a share of the starting price.
Income spent: price change plus paid out: the result for someone who spent every payout.
Income, 3 yr: distributions over the last 12 months against the same 12 months three years earlier, per share.
