How it works
FYEE does not track an index. Fidelity's managers normally put at least 80% of assets in stocks and similar securities. They focus on companies about the size of those in the S&P 500 or Russell 1000 indexes. They use computer-aided, quantitative analysis of past valuation, growth, profitability and other factors to choose a broadly diversified group of stocks that they think could beat the S&P 500's total return. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 181 stocks. The 10 largest made up about 39% of assets, led by NVIDIA (7.7%), Apple (7.3%) and Microsoft (5.1%). Technology was the biggest sector at 34%. Portfolio turnover was 90%, which means the managers trade often.
On top of the stocks, the fund sells (writes) call options on a large-company index such as the S&P 500. The buyer pays the fund a premium up front. If the index rises above the option's strike price before it expires, the fund owes the difference, so it gives up some gains in strong markets. As of July 31, 2026, the fund had written S&P 500 calls with strikes of 7,600 and 7,650, expiring at different dates in August 2026. Those index options settle in cash, so the fund does not have to sell its stocks. The fund also uses S&P 500 futures and lends securities for extra income. Some payouts may count as a return of capital, meaning part of your own money is handed back to you.
What it really costs
- FYEE charges 0.28% a year, versus an average of 0.07% for the similar funds below (9th of 9, cheapest first).
- The fee includes a 0.03% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $29 in the first year and $389 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FYEE | $29 | $96 | $170 | $389 |
In a retirement portfolio
Its stated goal is current income from stock dividends plus option premiums, and it pays quarterly while staying mostly invested in large US stocks.
FYEE could add an income stream from a portfolio of large US stocks, but its track record is short. It launched on April 11, 2024, so it has no history through the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 18.8%, from January 27 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by August 12, 2025, about four months later. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 15.45%. Option premiums soften losses only a little, so a long slump could still force sales at low prices. The trailing yield was 9.12% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Payouts can vary and may include a return of capital. The SEC's standard example puts costs at $29 for the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want large US stocks plus quarterly payouts. The trailing 12-month yield was 9.12% as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors comfortable with active, computer-driven stock picking and 90% annual turnover instead of a plain index fund.
- Investors willing to give up some upside for option income. Beta, a measure of how much it moves with the market, was 0.78 over one year.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors. FYEE's 0.28% expense ratio is four times the 0.07% average of similar large-cap funds, such as Vanguard Mega Cap ETF.
- Anyone who wants a long record. The fund launched in April 2024 and has no history through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 market falls.
- Investors who want full S&P 500 gains. Since launch, the fund trailed that index: 16.64% versus 18.65% a year through May 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Does FYEE pay monthly dividends?
No. FYEE pays quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $2.73 per share, a trailing yield of 9.12%. The amount can change from one payment to the next. It depends on the dividends from the fund's stocks and the premiums from the call options it sells. Fidelity also warns that some payouts may exceed the fund's income and gains. That portion would count as a return of capital, which can lower the fund's value.
Is FYEE a covered call ETF?
Partly. FYEE writes call options, but on a stock index such as the S&P 500, not on each stock it owns. The premiums add income. In return, the fund gives up gains when the index rises above the options' strike prices. As of July 31, 2026, the written calls were a small slice of the portfolio, and about 97% of assets were in stocks. So the fund behaves mostly like a large-cap stock fund with an income boost.
What's the difference between FYEE and MGC?
FYEE costs more and adds options. Vanguard Mega Cap ETF (MGC) shared about 67% of FYEE's holdings, based on the latest N-PORT holdings reports. MGC charges 0.07% a year, compared with FYEE's 0.28%. FYEE uses quantitative stock picking and writes S&P 500 call options for income. Over one year through October 27, 2026, FYEE returned 15.1% and MGC returned 13.5%. MGC is far larger, with about $10.9 billion in net assets versus about $218 million for FYEE.
Is FYEE good for retirement income?
It may suit retirees who want income from large US stocks, but it has drawbacks. It pays quarterly, and its trailing yield was 9.12% as of October 27, 2026. The record is short, though. The fund launched in April 2024, and its deepest drop was 18.8% in early 2025. That loss was recovered in about four months. It costs 0.28% a year, more than many large-cap index funds. The yield can also change, and payouts may include a return of capital.
How has FYEE performed compared with the S&P 500?
FYEE has trailed the S&P 500 so far. Fidelity's prospectus shows a 15.45% return for the year to May 30, 2026, compared with 17.88% for the S&P 500. Since launch, FYEE returned 16.64% a year versus 18.65% for the index. Some lag is expected, because selling call options limits gains in strong markets. In exchange, the fund has been less volatile. Its one-year volatility was 10.5% and its beta was 0.78 as of October 27, 2026.
