How it works

SPIN has two parts. The first is a stock portfolio chosen by SSGA Funds Management, State Street's adviser, not copied from an index. The managers use company research to look for US firms worth $2 billion or more that have low valuations, sensible debt levels and management focused on shareholders. They may sell a stock when those traits fade or it looks too expensive. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 97 stocks, and the top 10 made up 45% of assets. The largest were NVIDIA (9.3%), Alphabet (6.0%), Microsoft (5.6%) and Apple (5.5%). Technology made up 37%. The fund is non-diversified, so a single stock can move it more.

The second part is an options overlay. A call option gives its buyer the right to buy an asset at a set price, called the strike, before a deadline. SPIN sells these calls, mainly on a large-company index such as the S&P 500 or on ETFs that track one. It keeps the payment, called a premium, as income. In return, it gives up gains above the strike. Each option usually lasts about a month, and a new batch starts roughly every week. This staggering is called a ladder.

A proprietary risk signal, based on market volatility and investor sentiment, sets the strikes. When risk looks high, strikes sit closer to the market price. The fund collects more premium but caps more upside. The fund may also use customizable FLEX options and futures.

What it really costs

  • SPIN charges 0.25% a year, versus an average of 0.16% for the similar funds below (7th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $26 in the first year and $318 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
SPIN$26$80$141$318

Structure and tax notes

  • Generates much of its income from selling options (directly or through notes). That income is usually taxed as ordinary income rather than as qualified dividends, and the strategy gives up some upside in strong markets.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleIncome

SPIN pays monthly, and most of its payout comes from selling call options on large US stocks rather than from growth alone.

SPIN could add monthly income. Its trailing 12-month yield was 4.75% as of October 27, 2026, or $1.59 per share. Much of that comes from option premiums. That income is usually taxed as ordinary income, and the strategy gives up some gains in strong markets. Because the fund launched in September 2024, it has no record from the 2008, 2020 or 2022 sell-offs. Its deepest drop was 16.8%, from February 19 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by July 17, 2025, about 3.3 months later. In a longer slump, someone drawing income could end up selling shares at low prices, and the payouts aren't guaranteed. It costs 0.25% a year, or $26 in the first year on $10,000 in the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors seeking monthly income from large US stocks; the trailing 12-month yield was 4.75% as of October 27, 2026.
  • People comfortable with active stock picking plus an options overlay whose strike prices shift with the manager's reading of market risk.
  • Investors comparing covered-call funds on cost: SPIN charges 0.25% a year, versus 0.29% for GPIX and 0.35% for XYLG.

Look elsewhere if

  • Those wanting full stock-market gains: SPIN's 8.2% one-year return trailed all eight similar funds compared, as of October 27, 2026.
  • Investors who want a long record: SPIN launched in September 2024 and has not been through a major bear market.
  • Anyone wary of tiny funds: with about $46 million in net assets as of June 30, 2026, trading spreads and closure risk are higher.

Questions investors ask

Does SPIN pay monthly dividends?

Yes. SPIN pays distributions every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.59 per share, a trailing yield of 4.75%. Much of that income comes from premiums the fund collects by selling call options, on top of dividends from its stocks. Option income is usually taxed as ordinary income rather than as qualified dividends. Payouts can also change from month to month, because option premiums depend on market conditions.

What's the difference between SPIN and GPIX?

Both funds sell call options for income, and their holdings overlapped by 57% in their latest N-PORT reports. SPIN costs less, at 0.25% a year versus 0.29% for GPIX. It is also far smaller: about $46 million in net assets as of June 30, 2026, against about $4.7 billion for GPIX. SPIN's managers pick its stocks actively. Over the year to October 27, 2026, GPIX returned 14.7% and SPIN returned 8.2%.

Is SPIN good for retirement income?

It can fill an income role, with trade-offs. SPIN pays monthly and yielded 4.75% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026. However, selling calls caps its gains in strong rallies. The fund only launched in September 2024 and has not been tested in a deep bear market. Its worst drop was 16.8% in early 2025, which it recovered in about 3.3 months. It is worth judging alongside the rest of a portfolio.

How has SPIN performed since launch?

According to its prospectus, SPIN returned 14.14% in 2025, its first full calendar year. From its September 2024 launch through December 31, 2025, it averaged 15.39% a year. Over the year to October 27, 2026, it returned 8.2%, behind all eight similar funds it was compared with. Its strongest quarter gained 7.85% (third quarter of 2025). Its weakest lost 4.7% (first quarter of 2025).

What is SPIN's expense ratio?

SPIN's expense ratio is 0.25% a year, according to its prospectus filed April 24, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $26 after one year, $80 after three, $141 after five and $318 after ten. That is above the 0.16% average for similar funds, most of which don't sell options. It is below the covered-call funds GPIX (0.29%) and XYLG (0.35%).
