Size is not a measure of quality, but it tells you a lot. The biggest ETFs are where most investors’ money actually sits, they tend to be the cheapest and the easiest to trade, and a fund with hundreds of billions of dollars is very unlikely to close. This page ranks ETFs by the net assets reported in their latest SEC filings rather than a vendor’s estimate.

Most of the top of the list is broad, low-cost index funds. The second table shows the largest fund of each kind, from bonds to gold, which is often the simplest place to start when comparing within a category.

Reading the size ranking

Vanguard counts its mutual fund too (†)

Most Vanguard ETFs are a share class of a fund that also sells mutual fund shares, and the SEC filing reports the whole fund. That makes Vanguard funds look larger than their ETF shares alone.

Bigger is not always cheaper

The oldest giants were built before today’s fee wars. Newer, smaller funds that track the same index sometimes charge less; compare the cost column within a category.

Trading volume matters to traders

A huge daily trading volume means tight buying and selling prices, which matters if you trade often or use options. For buy-and-hold investors in any large fund, it makes little difference.

Large funds rarely close

Fund closures are mostly small funds that never gathered assets. A closure isn’t a loss, since you get the fund’s value back, but it can mean an unplanned sale and a tax bill.

The right fund is the one that fits your plan

Popular funds are a fine starting point. ReadyAimRetire shows how your mix of funds, Social Security and spending plays out year by year in retirement.

Questions investors ask

What is the largest ETF?

By the net assets in the latest SEC filings, VTI (Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF) is the largest, counting all of its share classes, including mutual fund shares, followed by VOO and IVV.

Why are Vanguard funds so large?

Vanguard ETFs are usually a share class of a fund that also has mutual fund shares, and filings report the whole fund. Vanguard is also one of the largest fund companies, and its index funds have been among the cheapest for decades.

Does fund size affect returns?

Not directly. Two funds tracking the same index earn nearly the same return whatever their size; the differences come from costs and how closely each tracks the index. Size matters more for trading costs and the risk of a fund closing.

Are the largest ETFs the safest?

Size doesn’t protect against market losses: the largest stock funds fell as much as the market in every crash. Large funds are less likely to close and cheaper to trade, but how risky a fund is depends on what it holds.
