Questions investors ask
What is the largest consumer discretionary company in the US?
Amazon.com (AMZN), worth $2.66T on Oct 28, 2026, followed by Tesla ($1.60T) and Home Depot ($340.36B).
How are companies placed in sectors?
By each company’s SEC industry code, mapped onto the sectors investors use today. The codes are decades old, so a few companies, such as Alphabet, Meta, Visa and Mastercard, are placed by hand.
How this ranking is built
- Which companies: the 1514 companies with stock pages: the largest US-listed companies by market value that file annual reports (10-Ks) with the SEC. Foreign companies that file 20-F or 40-F reports instead aren’t covered yet, so ranks are among these companies, not every US-listed stock.
- Sectors: from each company’s SEC industry code, mapped onto the sectors investors use today; a few companies, such as Alphabet, Meta, Visa and Mastercard, are placed by hand. “Industry” is the SEC’s own description.
- Market value: the latest close times the shares outstanding on the cover of the latest 10-K or 10-Q. For a company with several share classes, every class is counted; for depositary shares, the shares each one represents.
- Prices and returns: daily closing prices through Oct 28, 2026. Returns include dividends, reinvested. Financial figures come from each company’s latest 10-K, so fiscal years end on different dates.
- Updates: the rankings are recomputed from the stock pages’ own figures whenever those change, so the two always agree.
