Questions investors ask
Which US company returns the most cash to shareholders?
Apple (AAPL): $515.24B in dividends and buybacks over its last five fiscal years, 85% of it in buybacks.
How is cash returned to shareholders measured here?
Dividends paid plus shares bought back over the last five fiscal years, from the cash flow statements in the 10-Ks. Buybacks partly offset shares handed to employees, so the share count can shrink by less (see the share-count ranking).
How this ranking is built
- Which companies: the 1514 companies with stock pages: the largest US-listed companies by market value that file annual reports (10-Ks) with the SEC. Foreign companies that file 20-F or 40-F reports instead aren’t covered yet, so ranks are among these companies, not every US-listed stock.
- Cash returned: Dividends paid plus shares bought back over the last five fiscal years, from the cash flow statements in the 10-Ks. Buybacks partly offset shares handed to employees, so the share count can shrink by less (see the share-count ranking).
- Market value: the latest close times the shares outstanding on the cover of the latest 10-K or 10-Q. For a company with several share classes, every class is counted; for depositary shares, the shares each one represents.
- Prices and returns: daily closing prices through Oct 28, 2026. Returns include dividends, reinvested. Financial figures come from each company’s latest 10-K, so fiscal years end on different dates.
- Updates: the rankings are recomputed from the stock pages’ own figures whenever those change, so the two always agree.
