Questions investors ask
Which large US stocks held up best in 2022?
Progressive (PGR, −10.5%), McKesson (MCK, −10.5%) and Cigna (CI, −10.7%), with dividends reinvested.
How is fall in the 2022 bear market measured here?
The deepest fall from a high to a later low between the S&P 500’s peak on Jan 3, 2022 and its low on Oct 12, 2022, with dividends reinvested, and the time from that low until the stock closed at its earlier high again.
How this ranking is built
- Which companies: the 1514 companies with stock pages: the largest US-listed companies by market value that file annual reports (10-Ks) with the SEC. Foreign companies that file 20-F or 40-F reports instead aren’t covered yet, so ranks are among these companies, not every US-listed stock.
- 2022 bear market: The deepest fall from a high to a later low between the S&P 500’s peak on Jan 3, 2022 and its low on Oct 12, 2022, with dividends reinvested, and the time from that low until the stock closed at its earlier high again.
- Market value: the latest close times the shares outstanding on the cover of the latest 10-K or 10-Q. For a company with several share classes, every class is counted; for depositary shares, the shares each one represents.
- Prices and returns: daily closing prices through Oct 28, 2026. Returns include dividends, reinvested. Financial figures come from each company’s latest 10-K, so fiscal years end on different dates.
- Updates: the rankings are recomputed from the stock pages’ own figures whenever those change, so the two always agree.
