The business in plain English
BankUnited, Inc. owns BankUnited, a national bank based in Miami Lakes, Florida. It had total assets of $35.0 billion at December 31, 2025. Florida is its largest market, followed by the New York Tri-State area, and it has expanded into Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte. Its goal is to be a leading regional bank for businesses, and it has grown mostly without acquisitions.
Its main lending focus is businesses: credit lines, equipment loans and commercial real estate loans, favoring industrial and warehouse property, apartments and retail. It has pulled back from office lending. It does not make home loans itself but buys jumbo mortgages (loans too big for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy) from lenders nationwide. A unit called Pinnacle finances state and local governments. Checking balances come mainly from businesses, including title companies and homeowners associations. It charges consumers no overdraft fees.
BankUnited earns chiefly from net interest income: the gap between interest earned on loans and securities and interest paid on deposits and borrowings. In 2025 that brought in about $988 million of its $1.09 billion in revenue, while fees and other noninterest income added about $106 million. As of June 30, 2026, it held $28.9 billion of deposits and $23.7 billion of loans. The 10-K does not split revenue by segment.

What could go wrong
- Concentrated in Florida and New York. The business is concentrated in Florida and the New York Tri-State area. A local recession or property slump there could hurt this bank more than one spread across the country.
- Many business deposits are uninsured. A significant share of deposits come from businesses, and many exceed federal insurance limits. If trouble at other regional banks worried customers, money could leave fast, draining cash and raising funding costs.
- Leased equipment tied to fossil fuels. The bank owns equipment it leases to businesses, and many of these assets serve the fossil fuel industry. Weaker demand or a shift away from fossil fuels could cut lease income and equipment values.
- Real estate values drive loan quality. A substantial portion of assets is tied to commercial or residential property. Falling values or weaker rents could raise defaults and force foreclosures. It holds a small amount of New York rent-regulated apartment loans.
- Interest rate shifts can squeeze earnings. Net interest income, the gap between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, is the main source of revenue. If deposit costs and loan rates move at different speeds, that gap can shrink.
- Loan losses could outrun reserves. The bank sets money aside for expected bad loans, called the allowance for credit losses. If defaults run higher, bigger set-asides would cut profits. It set aside $68 million for credit losses in 2025.

For income and retirement investors
BankUnited pays a regular dividend and has raised it four years in a row. Dividends per share went from $0.92 in 2020 and 2021 to $1.24 in 2025, growth of about 6.2% a year. Dividends took about 34% of 2025 profit. The yield was 3.04% as of October 28, 2026. It spent more on buying back its own shares: $820 million from 2021 to 2025, against $422 million in dividends. The share count fell about 20% between November 2021 and August 2026.
In the 2020 COVID crash the stock dropped 53% from February 20 to March 23, 2020, and recovered by December 2020. In the 2022 bear market it fell about 26% and took roughly 26 months to recover, until November 2024. Its price history starts after the 2008 crisis. The dividend was held at $0.92, not cut, through 2020 and 2021. Like any single stock, BankUnited carries more risk than a diversified fund.
Questions investors ask
How does BankUnited make money?
Mostly by lending. In fiscal 2025, BankUnited earned $988 million of net interest income. That is the gap between the interest it collects on loans and investments and the interest it pays on deposits and borrowings. Net interest income made up most of its $1.09 billion in revenue. Fees and other noninterest income added $106 million. The bank is based in Miami Lakes, Florida. It focuses on commercial and small business customers, mainly in Florida and the New York Tri-State area.
Does BankUnited raise its dividend every year?
Not every year, but it has raised its dividend four years in a row. The dividend stayed at $0.92 a share in both 2020 and 2021. It then rose to $1.00, $1.08 and $1.16, and reached $1.24 in fiscal 2025. From fiscal 2020 to 2025, it grew about 6.2% a year. The fiscal 2025 dividend used 34.2% of earnings. The dividend yield was 3.04% as of October 28, 2026.
What is BankUnited's P/E ratio?
It was 12.1 as of October 28, 2026. The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio compares the share price with profit per share. This one uses fiscal 2025 diluted earnings of $3.53 a share. The company's market value of about $3.05 billion was close to its $3.0 billion of shareholders' equity on June 30, 2026. A low multiple can reflect modest expectations. Return on equity, which measures profit for each dollar of shareholders' capital, was 8.8% in fiscal 2025.
Is BankUnited buying back its stock?
Yes, but the pace has varied a lot. BankUnited spent about $820 million on buybacks from fiscal 2021 to 2025. That included $318 million in 2021 and $401 million in 2022. It bought back nothing in fiscal 2024 and $45 million in fiscal 2025. Shares outstanding fell 20%, from about 89.1 million on November 1, 2021 to about 71.2 million on August 4, 2026. With fewer shares, each remaining share has a claim on a larger slice of profit.
How risky is BankUnited stock?
It has had steep drops, as regional bank stocks often do. BankUnited shares fell 53.1% in the 2020 COVID crash. They fell 25.5% in the 2022 bear market and took 25.8 months to recover. The largest drop in the stock's price history was 66.6%. The company's annual report (10-K) warns that many of its commercial deposits are uninsured, so they could leave quickly in a scare. It also notes that the business is concentrated in Florida and the New York Tri-State area.
