How it works

XSMO tracks the S&P SmallCap 600 Momentum Index, which S&P Dow Jones Indices builds and maintains. The index starts with the S&P SmallCap 600, a widely followed index of US small companies. S&P measures each stock's price change over the last 12 months, leaving out the most recent month, and then adjusts it for how volatile the stock was. The result is its "momentum score." About 120 of the highest-scoring stocks make the cut. As of June 30, 2026, the index held 109 companies with market values from $661.6 million to $13.5 billion.

Each stock's weight comes from its market value multiplied by its momentum score, with limits on single stocks and sectors. As of July 31, 2026, the largest holdings were Viasat (4.6% of assets), ESCO Technologies (3.0%), Protagonist Therapeutics (2.6%), Indivior Pharmaceuticals (2.2%) and Mercury Systems (2.2%). The top 10 made up 24.1%.

The fund uses full replication, which means it buys every stock in the index at the index's weights. It uses no leverage, options or derivatives. Yesterday's winners keep changing, so the portfolio does too. Turnover was 121%, which means the fund bought and sold more than its whole portfolio's worth in a year. Those trading costs are not included in the expense ratio.

What it really costs

  • XSMO charges 0.35% a year, versus an average of 0.14% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.29% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $36 in the first year and $444 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
XSMO$36$113$197$444

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, high-turnover tilt toward small stocks with strong recent price gains, and it has seen steep drops and slow recoveries, so it fits better as a side position than as a foundation.

XSMO could add a tilt toward small US companies whose prices have been rising. The ride has been rough at times. Its deepest drop was 29.6%, from November 9, 2021 to September 26, 2022. It did not regain its old high until March 21, 2024, about 18 months after the low. In the 2022 bear market it fell 25.3%, and 2022 was its worst calendar year, at -15.5%. Its price history starts in June 2020, so the 2008 crisis is not covered. The prospectus does show a 25.15% loss in the first quarter of 2020. Anyone who has to sell during a slump like these could lock in losses.

Income is small: the yield was 0.64% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Under the SEC's standard example, costs come to $36 in the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a small-cap slice that leans toward recent winners and accept a 0.35% fee, against a 0.14% average for similar funds.
  • Long-term holders who could sit through a drop like the 29.6% fall from November 2021 to September 2022 without selling.
  • Portfolios with a broad core fund that want a rules-based momentum tilt across about 110 S&P SmallCap 600 stocks.

Look elsewhere if

  • Income seekers: the yield was just 0.64% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Cost-focused investors: IJR charges 0.06% and SPSM 0.03% to hold the full S&P SmallCap 600.
  • Retirees who may need to sell in a downturn: after the 2022 low, the fund took about 18 months to reach its old high.

Questions investors ask

What does XSMO invest in?

XSMO holds about 110 US small-company stocks from the S&P SmallCap 600 that have had the strongest price gains over roughly the past year, adjusted for volatility. It tracks the S&P SmallCap 600 Momentum Index. As of July 31, 2026, its largest holdings were Viasat (4.6%), ESCO Technologies (3.0%) and Protagonist Therapeutics (2.6%), and the top 10 made up 24.1% of assets. The fund buys every stock in the index and uses no leverage or options.

XSMO vs RZG: what's the difference?

Both are Invesco small-cap funds that charge 0.35%, but they choose stocks differently. XSMO picks small caps with strong recent price momentum. RZG, the Invesco S&P SmallCap 600 Pure Growth ETF, targets growth companies. About 37% of their holdings overlap. As of October 27, 2026, RZG returned 12.4% over one year versus 9.9% for XSMO. Over three years XSMO led, at 22.1% a year versus 18.8%. As of July 31, 2026, XSMO was far larger, with $3.03 billion in assets against about $138 million for RZG.

Does XSMO pay dividends?

Yes. XSMO pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.52 per share, a yield of 0.64%. That is typical for a fund of fast-rising small companies, which often reinvest profits instead of paying them out. Investors looking for steady income from their portfolio would get little of it here. Most of the fund's return has come from price changes.

What is XSMO's expense ratio?

XSMO's expense ratio is 0.35% a year, according to its prospectus filed August 27, 2026, and 0.29% of that is the management fee. Under the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% yearly return), costs come to $36 after one year and $444 after 10 years. The average for similar funds is 0.14%. Broad small-cap funds cost far less: VIOG charges 0.10%, IJR 0.06% and SPSM 0.03%.

How has XSMO performed over 10 years?

XSMO returned 12.25% a year on average over the 10 years to December 31, 2025, according to its prospectus, and 9.59% a year over five years. The path was bumpy. The fund lost 15.48% in 2022 and 2.88% in 2018. Its worst quarter was a 25.15% drop in early 2020, and its strongest was a 23.72% gain the next quarter. Over the year to October 27, 2026, it returned 9.9%, the lowest of nine similar funds.
