How it works
AVSC is actively managed, so it does not try to copy an index. Its managers at American Century Investments compare it with the Russell 2000 Index, a common measure of U.S. small companies. In normal markets, at least 80% of assets go into U.S. small-cap stocks. The fund counts a company as small if it is outside the 1,000 largest U.S. firms, in the bottom 10% of U.S. market value, or in the Russell 2000. As of September 30, 2025, the largest qualifying company was worth about $25.2 billion.
Within that group, the managers favor smaller, cheaper and more profitable companies. "Value" mainly means a high adjusted book-to-price ratio, which is a low share price compared with the company's accounting net worth. "Profitability" mainly means cash from operations compared with book value. Each stock starts at its market-value weight, then gets weighted up or down. A stock may be sold once it no longer fits. As of May 31, 2026, the 10 largest positions made up just 4.06% of the fund, led by MYR Group at 0.57%.
Trading is light: portfolio turnover was 5% in the latest prospectus. The fund may lend out its securities. It may also handle creations and redemptions in cash. These are the trades large firms use to add or remove ETF shares. Handling them in cash can make the fund less tax-efficient than ETFs that exchange stocks instead. AVSC uses no leverage or options.
What it really costs
- AVSC charges 0.25% a year, versus an average of 0.15% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $26 in the first year and $319 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AVSC | $26 | $81 | $141 | $319 |
In a retirement portfolio
AVSC holds small, value-leaning U.S. companies that swing more than the broad market, so it fits better beside a core holding than in place of one.
AVSC could add a slice of smaller, cheaper U.S. companies that large-company funds barely own. Its record is short. It launched in January 2022, years after the 2008 crisis and the 2020 crash and just after the 2022 bear market began, so it has no full record through any of them. Its deepest drop was 28.4%, from November 25, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It got back to its old high by October 24, 2025, about 6.5 months after the low. Anyone who had to sell in that stretch would have locked in losses. Based on price, it lost 12.2% from launch through the end of 2022. Its weakest full calendar year, 2024, still gained 7.76%.
Income is small: the yield was 1% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $26 after one year and $319 after 10 years. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want about 1,500 U.S. small companies, with the top 10 at just 4.06%, tilted toward cheaper, more profitable firms.
- Investors who already own a large-company fund and want small-cap exposure with a value and profitability tilt alongside it.
- Long-term holders who could sit through a drop like the 28.4% fall from November 2024 to April 2025.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: index small-cap funds such as SPSM (0.03%) and IJR (0.06%) charge far less than AVSC's 0.25%.
- Investors who need steady income: the yield was 1% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
- Investors who want a track record through crises: AVSC launched in January 2022 and did not exist in 2008 or 2020.

Questions investors ask
Is AVSC good for retirement?
AVSC may suit retirement savers as a smaller part of their stock holdings rather than as a core fund. It holds U.S. small companies, which tend to swing more than large ones. Its deepest drop was 28.4%, from November 2024 to April 2025, and it took about 6.5 months from the low to recover. The yield was 1% as of October 27, 2026, so it adds little income. Its record only goes back to January 2022.
What's the difference between AVSC and SPSM?
SPSM tracks an S&P small-cap index for 0.03% a year. AVSC is actively managed, tilts toward cheaper, more profitable companies, and charges 0.25%. About 46% of their holdings overlap. Based on price, AVSC returned 22.7% over one year and 21.5% a year over three years as of October 27, 2026. SPSM returned 21% and 19.3% as of October 29, 2026. SPSM is much larger, with $16.9 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026.
Does AVSC pay dividends?
Yes, AVSC pays dividends quarterly. Over the trailing 12 months it paid $0.71 per share, a yield of about 1% as of October 27, 2026. That is a small amount of income. The fund's stated objective is long-term capital appreciation, meaning growth in share value, not income. Investors who rely on regular cash payments may find the payouts modest.
What is AVSC's expense ratio?
AVSC's expense ratio is 0.25% a year, according to its prospectus filed December 29, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return costs about $26 after one year, $141 after five years and $319 after 10 years. That ranks 7th of 9 on cost among similar small-cap funds, which average 0.19%. Index funds such as IJR charge 0.06%.
Is AVSC an index fund?
No. AVSC is an actively managed ETF that does not try to copy an index. It uses the Russell 2000 Index as its benchmark. In 2024 the fund returned 7.76%, compared with 11.54% for the Russell 2000. From its January 2022 launch through December 31, 2024, it averaged 4.09% a year, compared with 2.04% for the index. Its tilt toward value and profitability means it can trail or beat the index for long stretches.
