  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: -1.17%, +6.35%, +3.21%.

How it works

FYT aims to match the price and yield of the Nasdaq AlphaDEX Small Cap Value Index, before fees. Nasdaq, Inc. owns and runs the index. The fund normally puts at least 90% of its net assets in the index's stocks. The starting pool is the Nasdaq US 700 Small Cap Value Index. Nasdaq first removes extra share classes of the same company and stocks that fail its liquidity screens. Liquidity means how easily shares trade.

Nasdaq ranks the remaining stocks on growth and value factors. It labels each stock as value or growth, and the matching rank becomes that stock's "selection score." The 262 highest scorers make up the index. They are split into fifths (quintiles) by score, and higher-scoring fifths get bigger weights. The method is called AlphaDEX. It tries to pick stocks that may beat traditional indexes on a risk-adjusted basis, which is what "alpha" means. As of October 31, 2025, the index's companies were worth between $509.25 million and $7.93 billion, and the fund held a lot of financial stocks.

The index is rebuilt and rebalanced every quarter, and the fund follows shortly after. As a result, portfolio turnover was 113%, according to the prospectus filed November 28, 2025. That is roughly the same as replacing the whole portfolio once a year. The fund uses no leverage or options. As of July 31, 2026, it held 263 positions and no derivatives.

What it really costs

  • FYT charges 0.7% a year, versus an average of 0.3% for the similar funds below (9th of 9, cheapest first).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

FYT is a narrow, higher-cost bet on small value stocks that has fallen by half at its worst, so it fits as a small add-on rather than a foundation.

FYT adds small-company value stocks, which a large-cap core fund mostly lacks. The ride has been rough. The fund launched in 2011, so it has no record from 2008. In the 2020 COVID crash, it fell 46.4% in less than a month and recovered by June 8, 2020. In the 2022 bear market, it fell 25% and took about 14.5 months to recover. Its deepest drop was 50.5%, from August 2018 to March 2020, and it took eight months to make that back. Its worst calendar year was 2015, at −16.67%. Selling shares for spending money during stretches like these would lock in losses. As of October 27, 2026, the trailing yield was 1.86%, paid quarterly. The 0.70% fee is well above the 0.30% average for similar funds. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want small-cap value stocks spread across 263 positions, with no single stock above about 1.1% as of July 31, 2026.
  • People who prefer a rules-based, factor-scored index over size weighting and accept 113% turnover from quarterly rebalancing.
  • Long-term holders who can ride out drops like the 46.4% fall in early 2020 without needing to sell.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: FYT's 0.70% expense ratio is the highest of nine similar funds, while Vanguard's VIOV charges 0.10%.
  • Anyone seeking steady income: the trailing yield was 1.86% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Those uneasy with a heavy weight in financial stocks or deep losses, including a 50.5% drop between August 2018 and March 2020.

Questions investors ask

Is FYT a good ETF for retirement?

FYT is better seen as a small, higher-risk add-on than a core holding. It holds small value stocks picked by a factor-scoring method and charges 0.70% a year. It fell 46.4% in the 2020 COVID crash and 25% in the 2022 bear market. The 2022 loss took about 14.5 months to recover. As of October 27, 2026, the yield was 1.86%. Those swings matter for anyone who may need to sell shares in a bad year.

What's the difference between FYT and FYX?

Both are First Trust AlphaDEX funds, and about 60% of their holdings overlap. FYX, the Small Cap Core AlphaDEX Fund, isn't limited to value stocks, as its name suggests. It costs 0.61% versus 0.70% for FYT. FYX had net assets of about $1.37 billion, compared with about $195 million for FYT, both as of July 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, FYT returned 27.4% over one year and FYX 25.4%. Over three years, FYX was ahead: 24.3% a year versus 18.4%.

Does FYT pay dividends?

Yes, FYT pays dividends every quarter. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.30 per share, a trailing yield of 1.86%. Payments come from the dividends of the roughly 263 small companies it holds, so amounts can change from quarter to quarter. Income is not the fund's main goal. Its index picks stocks by value and growth scores, not by dividend yield.

Is FYT more expensive than other small cap value ETFs?

Yes. FYT's 0.70% expense ratio is the highest among nine similar funds, whose average is 0.30%. Vanguard S&P Small-Cap 600 Value ETF (VIOV) charges 0.10%, SPDR's SLYV 0.15% and iShares' IJS 0.18%. Over one year to October 27, 2026, FYT returned 27.4% versus 19.0% for VIOV. Over three years, VIOV was slightly ahead, at 19.4% a year versus 18.4%.

How has FYT performed over the long term?

FYT's long-term returns have been decent, with big swings. As of December 31, 2024, its average annual returns were 9.21% over five years, 6.79% over ten years and 9.01% since its 2011 launch. Calendar years ranged from −16.67% in 2015 to +30.15% in 2016. Based on price, it returned 10.6% a year over the ten years to October 27, 2026. Its strongest quarter gained 36.65% and its weakest lost 41.79%, both in 2020.
