How it works
FMET aims to match the Fidelity Metaverse Index before fees. Fidelity built the index with its own rules. The fund puts at least 80% of its assets in index stocks and in depositary receipts, which are certificates that let investors own foreign shares through a US listing. Fidelity describes the metaverse as a future internet of shared virtual and augmented-reality worlds that many people use at once. The index looks for companies in six areas: computing hardware, digital infrastructure, design and engineering software, gaming, web development and content, and smartphones and wearables.
Stocks that pass quality screens are ranked by market share in dollar revenue and by a "thematic relevancy" score. That score combines revenue from these activities with natural language processing (NLP), which is software that scans company documents for relevant keywords. Companies that earn over 50% of their revenue from these areas, or hold at least 5% market share, make up 85% or more of the index. Other companies are capped at lower weights. Each stock is weighted by a modified measure of average daily trading volume, with caps, rather than by company size.
The fund mainly buys the index stocks directly, though it may not hold all of them. As of June 30, 2026, it held 50 stocks, and the top 10 made up about 44% of assets. It also held one tiny Nasdaq-100 futures position. Portfolio turnover was 33%.
What it really costs
- FMET charges 0.39% a year, versus an average of 0.48% for the similar funds below (2nd of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $40 in the first year and $493 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMET | $40 | $125 | $219 | $493 |
In a retirement portfolio
FMET is a narrow theme fund of about 50 tech, gaming and data-center stocks, and it has moved more sharply than the broad market.
FMET could add a focused tech and gaming slice to a portfolio. It costs 0.39% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that comes to $40 after one year and $493 after 10 years on $10,000. It swings hard. As of Oct 27, 2026, its three-year volatility was 22.1%, and over the past year it moved about 1.44 times as much as the market. It launched April 19, 2022, so it has no record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes or from the start of the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 29.2%, from May to November 2022. It recovered 6.7 months later, in May 2023. Its weakest full calendar year was 2024, a 6.8% gain. Anyone forced to sell in a slump could lock in losses. The 0.73% yield, paid quarterly, adds little income. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want metaverse-themed exposure at low cost: a 0.39% expense ratio, compared with 0.59% for METV and 0.61% for GGME.
- People comfortable holding big tech names like AMD, Alphabet, Apple and Nvidia alongside gaming stocks like Take-Two, Roblox and Electronic Arts.
- Those who want some foreign exposure within a tech theme, including Cayman Islands-registered, South Korean and Japanese stocks, as of June 30, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Income seekers: the trailing 12-month yield was 0.73% as of Oct 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
- Investors who prefer larger funds: FMET had about $44 million in assets as of June 30, 2026, and $1.9 million in net outflows over three months.
- Those focused on past returns: FMET ranked last of 8 similar funds on three-year return as of Oct 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Is FMET good for retirement?
FMET is best seen as a small, higher-risk add-on, not a core retirement holding. It holds about 50 tech, gaming and data-center stocks, and it fell 29.2% from May to November 2022. Its 0.73% yield as of Oct 27, 2026, provides little income. Its 0.39% expense ratio is low for a theme fund. It may suit investors who want a modest slice of this theme next to broader holdings.
What's the difference between FMET and METV?
Both funds follow the metaverse theme, and about 40% of their holdings overlap. FMET is cheaper, with a 0.39% expense ratio against METV's 0.59%. METV is much larger, with about $210.6 million in assets against FMET's roughly $44 million, as of June 30, 2026. As of Oct 27, 2026, METV returned 31.8% a year over three years, compared with 19.6% for FMET.
Does FMET pay dividends?
Yes. FMET pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. Over the 12 months to Oct 27, 2026, it paid $0.28 per share, a yield of 0.73%. That low payout fits its holdings: growth-oriented tech and gaming companies like AMD, Nvidia and Roblox often pay small dividends or none. Investors looking for steady income from this fund would get very little.
What stocks are in FMET?
As of June 30, 2026, FMET's largest holdings were Advanced Micro Devices (5.4%), Alphabet (4.7%), Equinix (4.7%), Apple (4.5%), Nvidia (4.5%), Meta Platforms (4.4%) and Microsoft (4.2%). Adobe, Qualcomm and data-center owner Digital Realty rounded out the top 10, which together made up about 44% of assets. About 76.5% of holdings were US companies. The rest included Cayman Islands-registered, South Korean and Japanese stocks.
How has FMET performed since it launched?
FMET's results have been strong in some years and weak in others. Its prospectus shows calendar-year returns of 40.62% in 2023, 6.8% in 2024 and 22.07% in 2025. As of Oct 27, 2026, it returned 19.6% a year over three years and lost 1.2% over one year. Its deepest drop was 29.2% in 2022. It recovered by May 2023.
