The business in plain English

Wesbanco, based in Wheeling, West Virginia, is a bank holding company, which means a company that owns a bank. Its one bank, Wesbanco Bank, serves individuals and businesses through 251 branches and 266 ATMs in West Virginia, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Maryland. Total assets were about $27.7 billion as of December 31, 2025. Earlier that year, on February 28, 2025, Wesbanco completed its purchase of Premier Financial Corp.

Like most banks, it earns most of its money from net interest income. That is the gap between the interest it collects on loans and investments and the interest it pays on deposits and borrowings. In fiscal 2025, net interest income was $814.3 million of $981.1 million in total revenue. The other $166.8 million was noninterest income, which includes fees from services such as trust, brokerage, mortgage banking and insurance.

Wesbanco reports two business segments. Community banking takes deposits and makes loans to individuals and businesses. Trust and investment services managed about $7.9 billion of client assets as of December 31, 2025. The bank is also the investment adviser to the WesMark family of mutual funds. Other subsidiaries offer property, casualty, life and title insurance, as well as full-service and discount brokerage.

What could go wrong

  1. Loans concentrated in a few regional economies. Most of Wesbanco's loans go to people and businesses in West Virginia, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and nearby areas. A downturn there could raise loan losses and lower collateral values.
  2. Oil and gas swings hit local economies. Volatile oil and gas prices can slow shale gas activity in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. That could shrink royalty deposits at the bank and weaken both business and household borrowers.
  3. Bigger rivals in larger city markets. In larger metropolitan areas, Wesbanco competes with established banks that have more resources and higher lending limits. Winning customers there may mean paying more on deposits or charging less on loans, which reduces profits.
  4. Deposits could drain in a downturn. In a weak economy, customers may draw down their deposits to cover expenses. If the deposit base shrinks, the bank may have to borrow at higher rates to meet its cash needs.
  5. Tighter oversight above $10 billion in assets. Because its assets exceed $10 billion, Wesbanco faces closer supervision from federal and state bank regulators and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Meeting those demands takes extra resources for compliance and risk management.
  6. Shifts in federal trade and fiscal policy. Wesbanco warns that major changes in federal policy, including to international trade agreements and imports, could hurt both the bank and the businesses and households it lends to.

For income and retirement investors

Wesbanco has raised its dividend per share at least nine years in a row through fiscal 2025, and the true streak may be longer. The dividend grew from $1.28 in fiscal 2020 to $1.49 in fiscal 2025, about 3.1% a year. Dividends paid took 56.1% of fiscal 2025 net income, and the yield was 3.95% as of October 28, 2026. The company reported no repurchases of its own shares from fiscal 2021 through 2025. Instead, its share count rose 46.6% between July 2021 and July 2026, a period that included the Premier Financial purchase.

The stock has fallen hard in crises. It dropped 53.4% in the 2008 financial crisis and took about 50 months from its March 2009 low to recover. It fell 39.7% in the 2020 COVID crash and recovered in about 11 months. In 2022 it dipped as much as 19.7% but ended the market's January–October slide up 4.5%. Single stocks carry more risk than diversified funds.

Questions investors ask

How does Wesbanco make money?

Mostly by lending. Wesbanco earns more interest on its loans and investments than it pays on deposits. That gap, called net interest income, was $814.3 million of its $981.1 million in fiscal 2025 revenue. The other $166.8 million was noninterest income, which includes fees from trust and investment services, brokerage, mortgage banking and insurance. Its trust business oversaw about $7.9 billion of client assets as of December 31, 2025.

Does Wesbanco raise its dividend every year?

Yes, so far. Wesbanco's dividend per share has risen at least nine years in a row through fiscal 2025, and the streak may be longer. It grew from $1.28 in fiscal 2020 to $1.49 in fiscal 2025, a modest pace of about 3.1% a year. Dividends paid took 56.1% of fiscal 2025 net income. A long record of increases is no guarantee, because a bank's board can cut the dividend if losses rise.

What is Wesbanco's dividend yield?

Wesbanco's dividend yield was 3.95% as of October 28, 2026. On that date the stock traded at about 17.3 times its fiscal 2025 diluted earnings of $2.23 per share, and the company's market value was about $3.7 billion. Earnings per share in fiscal 2025 were well below the $3.53 earned in fiscal 2021, because net income fell over that span while the share count grew.

How has Wesbanco stock performed over the long term?

Based on share price, Wesbanco gained about 5.7% a year over the 10 years to October 28, 2026, and 6.7% a year over five years. It rose 31% in the 12 months to that date. The ride has been bumpy: its deepest drop in about 21 years of price history was 61.6%. Over the year to that date its beta, a measure of how closely a stock moves with the broad market, was 0.47. That means it moved less than the market.

How did the Premier Financial acquisition change Wesbanco?

It sharply raised Wesbanco's revenue and profit but not its earnings per share. The deal closed on February 28, 2025. In fiscal 2025, the first year to include Premier, revenue rose 61.8% to $981.1 million and net income rose 47.3% to $223.1 million. Diluted earnings per share still slipped to $2.23 from $2.26, which shows the share count grew faster than profit. Shares outstanding rose 46.6% between July 2021 and July 2026.
