How it works

Dimensional Fund Advisors manages DFSV directly instead of copying an index. It starts with small US companies. These are firms in the bottom 10% of total market value, or smaller than the 1,000th-largest US company, whichever line is higher. As of December 31, 2025, that meant a market value below about $16.8 billion. At least 80% of net assets go to these companies. Within that group, the fund looks for value stocks. These are companies with a low share price relative to their book value, which is roughly what the balance sheet says the company is worth. Dimensional may also check price-to-earnings and price-to-cash-flow ratios.

Larger companies get bigger slices, but the fund can tilt toward smaller, cheaper or more profitable firms. It can also trim, add to or skip a stock based on short-term signals such as price momentum. The result is very spread out. As of July 31, 2026, it held 997 stocks, and the top 10 made up just 6.88%. The largest were Invesco, HF Sinclair and BorgWarner, at about 0.75% each.

Because it follows no index, it has no set rebalancing date. Dimensional trades flexibly to keep costs down, and turnover was 9%. The fund uses futures to manage cash coming in and going out, and it lends securities to earn extra income. Lending carries the risk that a borrower fails to return them.

What it really costs

  • DFSV charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.19% for the similar funds below (9th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.28% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

Small-cap value stocks swing more than the broad market, and DFSV has fallen as much as 28%, so it fits better as a smaller tilt beside a core fund than as the foundation.

DFSV adds smaller, cheaper US companies that make up only a sliver of a large-company index fund. Its record is short. It launched in February 2022, and its price history starts after the 2022 bear market, so it has no record from 2008, 2020 or 2022. Every full calendar year has been positive, and the weakest was 7.27% in 2024. Even so, it fell 28% from November 25, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It did not recover until December 10, 2025, about eight months later. Selling shares to cover spending during that drop would have locked in losses. The yield was a modest 1.41% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Its 0.30% fee is the highest in its comparison group. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a broad small-cap value tilt: 997 stocks, and no single holding above about 0.76% as of July 31, 2026.
  • People who prefer Dimensional's research-driven active approach, which screens for low prices and higher profitability, over strictly following an index like the Russell 2000 Value.
  • Long-term holders who can sit through drops like the 28% fall from November 2024 to April 2025 without selling.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: at 0.30%, it is the most expensive of nine similar funds, while Vanguard Russell 2000 Value ETF (VTWV) charges 0.10%.
  • Anyone needing meaningful income: the trailing yield was 1.41% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Investors wanting a long track record: it launched in February 2022, so it has no history through the 2008 or 2020 crashes.

Questions investors ask

Is DFSV an index fund?

No. DFSV is an actively managed ETF and does not try to copy any index. Dimensional uses its own research to pick small US companies that look cheap relative to book value, and it may favor smaller or more profitable firms. It measures itself against the Russell 2000 Value Index. Even so, it trades lightly, with 9% portfolio turnover, and it is very spread out, holding 997 stocks as of July 31, 2026.

What's the difference between DFSV and DFAT?

Both are Dimensional ETFs, and they overlap heavily, sharing about 63% of their holdings based on their latest N-PORT reports. DFAT (Dimensional U.S. Targeted Value ETF) charges 0.28% a year against DFSV's 0.30%. DFAT is also bigger, with about $14.5 billion in net assets versus about $8.2 billion for DFSV as of July 31, 2026. Their one-year price returns were close: 24.9% for DFAT through October 29, 2026, and 23.6% for DFSV through October 27, 2026.

What is DFSV's expense ratio?

DFSV's expense ratio is 0.30% a year, according to its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. That includes a 0.28% management fee. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $31 in fees after one year, $97 after three, $169 after five and $381 after ten. That is above the 0.19% average for similar funds. Avantis U.S. Small Cap Value ETF (AVUV) charges 0.25%.

Does DFSV pay dividends?

Yes. DFSV pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.55 per share, a trailing yield of 1.41%. That is modest income, because the fund aims for long-term growth, not payouts. The fund also lends out some of its stocks for extra income, and that adds risk if a borrower fails to return them.

How has DFSV performed compared with the Russell 2000 Value?

Results are mixed. As of December 31, 2025, DFSV returned 8.51% over one year, behind the Russell 2000 Value Index's 12.59%. Since its February 2022 launch, it returned 9.25% a year, ahead of the index's 7.04%. Both trailed the broader Russell 3000 Index, which returned 14.28% a year since DFSV's launch. Based on price, DFSV returned 23.6% over the year ending October 27, 2026.
