The business in plain English

Revvity, formerly PerkinElmer, sells tools that scientists and labs use to study disease, develop drugs and diagnose patients. It is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, and markets its products in more than 160 countries. As of December 28, 2025, it had about 11,000 employees and was part of the S&P 500 Index. Revenue for the fiscal year that ended that day was about $2.86 billion.

The business splits almost exactly in half. Life Sciences brought in 50.1% of revenue. It sells reagents (antibodies, chemicals and other materials used in lab tests) and instruments to drug and biotech companies, contract research organizations, universities and government labs. Its brands include BioLegend, with more than 35,000 catalog items, Dharmacon gene tools and Opera Phenix drug-screening systems. Diagnostics brought in the other 49.9% and covers screening, detection and diagnosis. The company's customers also include public health authorities, private healthcare organizations and doctors.

Products make up 83.7% of revenue and services 16.3%. Labs use up reagents and reorder them, which can make that income steadier than instrument sales. By region, the United States supplied 39.4% of revenue, China 14.9%, Germany 6.2% and the United Kingdom 4.4%. Other countries added 35%.

What could go wrong

  1. Research funding cuts slow customer spending. Drug companies, universities and government labs buy Revvity's tools. The company says announced and proposed U.S. funding and regulation changes have made customers more cautious about buying both instruments and consumables.
  2. Tariffs, trade fights and China exposure. China supplied 14.9% of fiscal 2025 revenue. Tariffs, retaliatory trade measures and conflicts such as the war in Ukraine could disrupt Revvity's supply chain and its customers abroad.
  3. Acquisitions may not earn their cost. Revvity's strategy relies partly on buying companies and licensing technology. Deals can fail to integrate or pay off. If intangible assets such as brands and patents lose value, write-downs would cut reported earnings.
  4. A sizable debt load. As of July 5, 2026, debt was about $3.22 billion against $1.02 billion of cash and investments. Debt could make future borrowing harder, and loan terms limit some company activities.
  5. Falling behind better-funded rivals. Lab technology changes fast. Competitors with large budgets, patents and sales networks could launch better products. That could leave Revvity's instruments outdated and cost it market share.
  6. FDA and healthcare rule breaches. Revvity's products are overseen by the FDA and regulators abroad. Falling short of their rules could force recalls, halt manufacturing or bring civil, criminal or monetary penalties.

For income and retirement investors

Revvity pays a small dividend that has not grown. It paid about $0.28 per share in each fiscal year from 2020 through 2025, and the yield was 0.17% as of October 28, 2026. The dividend used 13.6% of fiscal 2025 earnings and 6.4% of free cash flow (cash left after running and investing in the business). Even so, the company warns that dividends could be cut. Buybacks, where a company buys its own shares, matter far more: $1.73 billion over fiscal 2021–2025, versus $170 million in dividends. The share count fell 11.6% between November 2021 and August 2026.

The price history covers about 3.5 years, so it misses the 2008, 2020 and 2022 market drops. The deepest fall from a peak in that period was 37.2%. The shares lost 13.1% in 2025, then gained 71.3% in 2026 through October 28. The stock pays an income investor little cash, so returns depend mainly on the share price. Single stocks carry more risk than diversified funds.

Questions investors ask

How does Revvity make money?

Revvity sells lab instruments, reagents and services to drug researchers and diagnostic labs. Revenue was about $2.86 billion in fiscal 2025, which ended December 28, 2025. Products brought in 83.7% and services 16.3%. Sales split almost evenly between two segments. Life Sciences, at 50.1%, serves drug and biotech companies, universities and government labs. Diagnostics brought in 49.9%. The United States supplied 39.4% of revenue and China 14.9%.

Does Revvity raise its dividend every year?

No. Revvity paid about $0.28 per share in each fiscal year from 2020 through 2025, so the dividend did not grow over that span. The yield was 0.17% as of October 28, 2026, which provides little income. The dividend used 13.6% of fiscal 2025 earnings. The company spends far more on buybacks: $1.73 billion from fiscal 2021 to 2025, compared with $170 million on dividends.

Is Revvity the same company as PerkinElmer?

Yes. Revvity's SEC filings list PerkinElmer and EG&G as former names of the company. It is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, trades on the New York Stock Exchange as RVTY and is part of the S&P 500 Index. Revenue from fiscal 2020 onward was restated in later filings. That means figures from before 2020 are on a different basis and can't be compared directly with newer ones.

Is Revvity's revenue growing?

Slowly. Revenue rose 3.7% to about $2.86 billion in fiscal 2025 and grew 1.4% a year on average from fiscal 2020. Sales peaked at $3.83 billion in fiscal 2021, fell to $2.75 billion in fiscal 2023, then edged up. In the quarter ended July 5, 2026, revenue rose 1.3% from a year earlier to about $730 million. Net income fell 3.9% to about $52 million.

Why is Revvity's P/E ratio so high?

Revvity's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio was 79.9 as of October 28, 2026, mainly because profits shrank while the share price climbed. The P/E divides the share price by earnings per share, here for fiscal 2025. Diluted earnings per share fell from $8.08 in fiscal 2021 to $2.07 in fiscal 2025. Meanwhile, the shares gained 71.3% in 2026 through October 28. A high P/E means buyers are paying a lot for each dollar of current profit.
