The short version

Invesco ESG S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSPE) tracks an S&P index that keeps the highest-scoring 40% of eligible S&P 500 companies in each industry group by ESG (environmental, social and governance) score, then gives each the same weight. It excludes oil and gas, weapons, tobacco and other screened businesses. Its 0.20% expense ratio matches Invesco's unscreened RSP, but with $73 million in assets as of August 31, 2026, it is far smaller.

How it works

RSPE seeks to track the S&P 500 Equal Weight Scored & Screened Leaders Select Index, built by S&P Dow Jones Indices. The starting point is the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index. It holds every S&P 500 stock at the same weight instead of weighting by company size (market capitalization, or "cap-weighting"). Screens then remove three groups of companies. The first is the oil and gas storage and transportation industry. The second is companies above set revenue or ownership limits in activities such as oil and gas, thermal coal, military contracting, small arms, nuclear power, tobacco, alcohol and gambling. The third is companies that the ESG research firm Sustainalytics rates as non-compliant with the UN Global Compact principles on human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

The remaining companies are ranked by S&P Global ESG score, which compares each company with others in its industry. Generally the top 40% in each industry group are kept, so industry weights stay close to the parent index. Companies with no score are left out. As of October 31, 2025, the index had 185 stocks.

The fund uses full replication, which means it owns essentially every index stock at its index weight. It generally trades only when the index changes. Weights drift between rebalancings as prices move. As of August 31, 2026, Moderna was the largest position at 1.6%, and the top 10 made up 8.2% of assets.

What it really costs

  • RSPE charges 0.2% a year, versus an average of 0.2% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $20 in the first year and $255 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
RSPE$20$64$113$255

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDiversifier

Equal weighting and ESG screens tilt RSPE away from the largest companies, so it can balance a cap-weighted S&P 500 fund, though its small size and short record make it a less obvious sole core holding.

RSPE could balance a portfolio built on cap-weighted index funds, because no stock dominates. Its top 10 holdings were 8.2% of assets as of August 31, 2026. It launched in November 2021, so it has no record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes. In the 2022 bear market it fell 22.9% from January 4 to September 30, 2022. It did not regain its peak until February 12, 2024, about 16 months after the low. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at about -12%. Anyone drawing money from it then would have been cashing out at depressed prices.

The yield was 1.37% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, so income is modest. Under the SEC's standard example, costs on $10,000 come to $20 in year one and $255 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want S&P 500 stocks at equal weights but prefer to exclude oil and gas, weapons, tobacco and gambling businesses.
  • Holders of cap-weighted S&P 500 funds who want less reliance on giant companies; RSPE's top 10 were 8.2% of assets as of August 31, 2026.
  • ESG-focused investors comfortable paying 0.20% a year, the same as Invesco's unscreened RSP and the average of similar funds.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: GSEW and IQSU, which hold many of the same stocks, charge 0.09% a year, versus RSPE's 0.20%.
  • Investors who want a long record: RSPE launched in November 2021, so it has no history through the 2008 or 2020 downturns.
  • Investors who put fund size first: with $73 million in assets as of August 31, 2026, RSPE ranked 8th of 9 similar funds.

Questions investors ask

Is RSPE good for retirement?

RSPE could fit a retirement portfolio as a diversifier next to a cap-weighted S&P 500 fund rather than as an income source. It yielded 1.37% as of October 27, 2026, and its record only goes back to November 2021. In 2022 it fell 22.9% from peak to low and took about 16 months after the low to recover. The prospectus shows an average annual return of 3.88% since inception as of December 31, 2024.

What's the difference between RSPE and RSP?

Both are Invesco equal-weight funds that charge 0.20%. RSP holds the whole S&P 500. RSPE keeps only the top ESG scorers in each industry group, about 185 stocks, after excluding oil and gas, coal, weapons, tobacco and more. Their holdings overlap by 37%. RSP had $96.5 billion in assets as of July 31, 2026. RSPE had $73.1 million as of August 31, 2026. RSPE returned 20.5% over one year and 21.5% a year over three years through October 27, 2026. RSP returned 18.3% and 19.4% through October 30, 2026.

Does RSPE pay dividends?

Yes. RSPE pays dividends every quarter, passing along the dividends from the stocks it holds. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.48 per share, a yield of 1.37%. That is a modest payout. The fund holds a broad mix of large US companies and does not target high-dividend stocks, so it works more as a growth holding with some income than as an income fund.

Does RSPE hold oil and energy stocks?

Mostly no. The index leaves out the oil and gas storage and transportation industry entirely. It also screens out companies above set thresholds of involvement in oil and gas exploration, production, refining, transportation or storage. Oil sands, shale, Arctic drilling and thermal coal are screened out too. As a result, the fund may lag the broader market when energy stocks rally. The prospectus flags this trade-off as ESG investing strategy risk.

What are RSPE's top holdings?

As of August 31, 2026, RSPE's largest positions were Moderna (1.6%), Charles River Laboratories (0.8%), Salesforce (0.8%), Palo Alto Networks (0.7%) and Expedia (0.7%). Workday, ServiceNow, Newmont, Regeneron and PayPal completed the top 10. Because the stocks are equally weighted, the top 10 made up only 8.2% of the fund across 184 holdings. Microsoft was about 0.7%, a much smaller share than it carries in a cap-weighted S&P 500 fund.
