What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors added a net $1.13B (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +5.85%, +1.96%, +0.05%.

How it works

SPYV aims to match, before fees, the total return (price changes plus dividends) of the S&P 500 Value Index from S&P Dow Jones Indices. That index starts with the S&P 500, large US-listed companies chosen by a committee that requires, among other tests, positive recent earnings. The value index keeps the stocks with the strongest value traits, judged by book value, earnings and sales relative to share price. As of July 31, 2026, it had 437 stocks.

Stocks are weighted by market capitalization, or total stock market value, so larger companies count for more, with caps to comply with US tax rules. As of June 30, 2026, Apple was 7.3% of the fund and the 10 largest holdings totaled about 24%. Technology and financials were the biggest sectors. The index lineup is rebuilt each December, and weights are adjusted every March, June, September and December.

SSGA Funds Management, the fund's investment adviser, may use sampling. That means holding a representative subset of index stocks rather than all of them. The fund normally keeps at least 80% of net assets in index securities and may use futures, a type of derivative, to manage cash. Like any ETF, its shares trade on an exchange at market prices that can differ from the value of the fund's holdings.

What it really costs

  • SPYV charges 0.04% a year, versus an average of 0.09% for the similar funds below (1st of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $4 in the first year and $51 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
SPYV$4$13$23$51

In a retirement portfolio

RoleCore holding

It spreads money across 437 large US-listed companies for 0.04% a year, though it covers only the value-leaning part of the S&P 500.

SPYV could supply broad, low-cost exposure to large value stocks plus modest income: a 1.65% yield over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Under the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% yearly returns), costs total about $4 in year one and $51 over 10 years. Losses can be steep. It fell 25.31% in the first quarter of 2020, during the COVID crash. Its deepest drop in the 2022 bear market was 17.9%, and it regained its prior high by February 1, 2023, about four months after the low. Its worst calendar year in the decade through 2025 was 2018, down 8.95%. Figures for 2008 aren't available here. Anyone needing money during such stretches could end up cashing in shares at low prices.

Past results don't predict future ones, and a retirement plan needs to look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Cost-focused investors seeking large US value stocks: the 0.04% expense ratio ties for the lowest among similar funds, versus 0.18% for IVE's near-identical portfolio.
  • Investors wanting a lean toward value stocks, spread widely: 437 holdings as of June 30, 2026, with the top 10 at about 24%.
  • Patient long-term holders: it returned 11.65% a year over the 10 years through 2025, despite losing years in 2018 and 2022.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees needing sizable income: the yield was 1.65% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, and payments arrive only quarterly.
  • Anyone who can't stomach stock losses: it fell 25.31% in the first quarter of 2020 and 17.9% from April to September 2022.
  • Investors wanting the full S&P 500: SPYV trailed SPY over the three years to October 27, 2026, returning 19.7% a year versus 24.8%.

Questions investors ask

What's the difference between SPYV and IVE?

Mostly cost. SPYV charges a 0.04% expense ratio, while iShares S&P 500 Value ETF (IVE) charges 0.18%. Their holdings overlap 100%, so returns have been close. Over the year to October 27, 2026, SPYV returned 15.1% and IVE 15%. Over three years, they returned 19.7% versus 19.6% a year. IVE is bigger, with about $47.7 billion in net assets against SPYV's $35.3 billion as of June 30, 2026. Vanguard S&P 500 Value ETF (VOOV), with 95% overlap, charges 0.07%.

Does SPYV pay dividends?

Yes. SPYV pays dividends quarterly, passing along dividends from the stocks it owns after fund expenses. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.06 per share, a yield of 1.65%. Payments can vary from quarter to quarter with the dividends its companies pay. The fund tracks a value index rather than screening for high dividends, so income is a side benefit, not the main goal.

Is SPYV good for retirement?

It can work as a low-cost core stock holding, but it is almost entirely stocks and can fall sharply. SPYV charges a 0.04% yearly fee. Under the SEC's standard example, that is about $4 on $10,000 in the first year. It held 437 stocks as of June 30, 2026. It lost 25.31% in the first quarter of 2020. Its 1.65% yield over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, is modest. How it fits depends on the rest of the portfolio.

What are SPYV's top holdings?

As of June 30, 2026, SPYV's largest holdings were Apple (7.3%), Amazon (3.8%), Intel (2.3%), Exxon Mobil (2.0%) and Walmart (1.7%). The 10 largest made up about 24% of the fund's 437 holdings. Technology and financials were the biggest sectors. Some of these may not look like classic bargain stocks. But the index picks them by formula, using book value, earnings and sales relative to price, and then weights them by market value.

What is SPYV's 10-year return?

SPYV returned an average of 11.65% a year over the 10 years ended December 31, 2025, according to its prospectus. Over five years it returned 12.89% a year. Calendar-year results in that decade ranged from a 31.78% gain in 2019 to an 8.95% loss in 2018. Through October 27, 2026, it was up 14.2% for the year to date. Past returns don't predict future results.
