How it works
DEHP does not track an index. Dimensional Fund Advisors LP picks the stocks. It starts with large companies in emerging markets, which can include frontier markets (countries at an earlier stage of development), but only in countries its Investment Committee has approved. "Large" is set country by country based on market capitalization, the total value of a company's shares. As of December 31, 2025, the cutoff was at least $1,187 million and varied by market: $5,937 million in Mexico and $10,743 million in the Czech Republic. From that group, the fund looks for companies with high operating profits compared with their book value or assets.
Holdings start from company size, and the manager then holds more of smaller, lower-priced (value) and more profitable stocks. It may also add to, trim or drop a stock based on short-term signals such as price momentum. Instead of following an index rebalance, the fund uses a flexible trading approach meant to keep trading costs down. Portfolio turnover was 14%.
At least 80% of net assets must be in approved emerging-market securities. The fund can also own depositary receipts (shares of foreign companies that trade on other exchanges), China A-shares and variable interest entities, which are contract-based structures that give exposure to some Chinese companies. It may use equity swaps, futures to manage cash coming in and out, and currency forwards to settle trades. It can also lend out its securities for extra income.
What it really costs
- DEHP charges 0.41% a year, versus an average of 0.28% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.35% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- The fee includes a 0.03% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $42 in the first year and $552 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DEHP | $42 | $138 | $243 | $552 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a concentrated, volatile emerging-market stock fund with a short history, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a core holding.
DEHP could add emerging-market stocks, tilted toward profitable companies, to a portfolio built mostly on US and developed-market funds. Its history is short. The fund launched on April 26, 2022, so it missed the 2008 and 2020 crashes. Its deepest drop was 22.9%, from May 4 to October 31, 2022, and it took about 16 months to recover, in March 2024. Its weakest calendar year, 2024, still gained 4.87%. But its returns swing widely: volatility was 28.4% over the year to October 27, 2026. Anyone who has to sell shares during a slump could lock in losses. The yield was 1.51% as of that date, paid quarterly, so this is not an income fund. Its 0.41% expense ratio is above the 0.28% average for similar funds. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting large, highly profitable emerging-market companies with a chipmaker tilt: SK hynix (10.7%) and Taiwan Semiconductor (8.8%) led as of July 31, 2026.
- Long-term holders comfortable with Dimensional's active approach over index tracking: 768 holdings as of July 31, 2026, and only 14% of holdings replaced per year.
- Diversified investors adding an emerging-markets slice who value some income: it pays quarterly, yielding 1.51% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: the 0.41% expense ratio ranks 8th of 9 among similar funds; IEMG charges 0.09% and SPEM 0.07%.
- Investors wanting proof of an edge: from launch through December 31, 2025, it averaged 9.74% a year versus 11.06% for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index.
- Those needing steadiness: a 2022 drop of 22.9% took 16 months to recover; one-year volatility (price swings) was 28.4% as of October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Is DEHP good for retirement?
DEHP may suit retirement savers as a small, higher-risk slice of a portfolio rather than a core holding. It owns emerging-market stocks and leans heavily on chipmakers. Volatility was 28.4% over the year to October 27, 2026. Its deepest drop was 22.9% in 2022, and it took about 16 months to recover. The yield was 1.51%, so it offers little income. The fund launched in April 2022, so it has a short record.
What is DEHP's expense ratio?
DEHP's expense ratio is 0.41% a year, according to the prospectus filed February 27, 2026. That includes a 0.35% management fee. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $42 after one year, $243 after five years and $552 after ten. The average for similar funds is 0.28%, and DEHP ranks 8th of 9 on cost among them.
What's the difference between DEHP and DFEM?
Dimensional runs both funds. DEHP is smaller and more focused: it holds large emerging-market companies with high profitability. Dimensional Emerging Markets Core Equity 2 ETF (DFEM) is the broader fund, and about 37% of their holdings overlap. DFEM costs 0.39% against DEHP's 0.41%, and it had about $9.0 billion in assets versus DEHP's $420 million. Over the year to October 27, 2026, DEHP returned 19.7% and DFEM returned 14.6%.
Does DEHP pay dividends?
Yes. DEHP pays dividends every quarter. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.57 per share, a yield of 1.51%. That income comes from the companies it owns, such as SK hynix, Taiwan Semiconductor and Tencent. The fund's goal is long-term growth, not income, so payouts can vary from quarter to quarter.
How has DEHP performed compared with the MSCI Emerging Markets Index?
DEHP has trailed its comparison index slightly. In 2025 the fund returned 32.46%, while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index returned 33.57%. From its April 2022 launch through December 31, 2025, DEHP averaged 9.74% a year, versus 11.06% for the index. Based on share prices, it gained 19.7% over the year to October 27, 2026, and 22.4% a year over three years.
