How it works
BBEM tracks the Morningstar Emerging Markets Target Market Exposure Index. The index targets the large and mid-size companies that make up the largest 85% of the investable stock market in emerging countries, including Brazil, China, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Taiwan. It is weighted by free-float market value, which means a company counts for more when the shares available to the public are worth more. As of January 30, 2026, the index held 1,467 securities.
The fund doesn't buy every stock. It uses representative sampling: it holds most of the index's stocks, chosen so the portfolio looks like the index overall, and keeps at least 80% of its assets in index securities. Because of this, its returns can drift slightly from the index. Holdings are rebalanced quarterly along with the index. The fund may also put up to 10% of its assets in exchange-traded futures, which are contracts tied to an index's value. As a passive fund, it keeps a struggling company until the index drops it, and it makes no defensive moves when markets fall.
Weighting by size puts a lot of the fund in a few companies. As of July 31, 2026, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing was 14.3% of assets, Samsung Electronics was 6.4% and SK hynix was 5.1%. Because the holdings trade in foreign currencies, a stronger US dollar can lower their value for US holders.
What it really costs
- BBEM charges 0.15% a year, versus an average of 0.25% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $15 in the first year and $192 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBEM | $15 | $48 | $85 | $192 |
In a retirement portfolio
Its stakes in companies in Taiwan, South Korea, India, China and other emerging markets can broaden a portfolio built mostly on US stocks, though its price can swing a lot.
BBEM launched on May 10, 2023, so it has no record through the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its weakest calendar year was 2024, which was still a 6.2% gain. Its deepest drop was 17.4%, from October 7, 2024, to April 8, 2025, and it had recovered by June 6, 2025. That short, fairly mild history may understate how far emerging-market stocks can fall. Anyone who has to sell shares during a slump could lock in losses. As of October 27, 2026, the trailing 12-month yield was 4.89%, paid quarterly. The 0.15% expense ratio works out to about $192 over 10 years on $10,000 in the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want broad emerging-market stocks for 0.15% a year, below the 0.25% peer average and far below EEM's 0.72%.
- Those comfortable with heavy chipmaker exposure: TSMC, Samsung and SK hynix made up about 26% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
- Investors with mostly US stocks who want exposure to Taiwan, South Korea, India and China and accept quarterly dividends that vary in size.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors focused on cost: VWO and SPEM charge 0.07% and IEMG charges 0.09%, compared with BBEM's 0.15%.
- Those who want a long track record: BBEM launched May 10, 2023, so it has no history through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 slumps.
- Investors uneasy with swings: BBEM fell 17.4% between October 2024 and April 2025, and its one-year volatility was 25% as of October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What is BBEM's expense ratio?
BBEM's expense ratio is 0.15% a year, according to its prospectus filed February 25, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $15 in fees after one year, $85 after five years and $192 after ten. That is below the 0.25% average of eight similar funds. Still, Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (VWO) and SPDR Portfolio Emerging Markets ETF (SPEM) charge 0.07%, iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG) charges 0.09% and Schwab Emerging Markets Equity ETF (SCHE) charges 0.11%.
What's the difference between BBEM and EEM?
The biggest difference is cost. BBEM charges 0.15% a year, and iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) charges 0.72%. BBEM tracks a Morningstar index, but the two funds' holdings overlap by about 83%, based on their latest N-PORT reports. EEM is much larger, with about $31.2 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026, compared with BBEM's $774 million as of July 31, 2026. Over one year, BBEM returned 14.6% through October 27, 2026, and EEM returned 12.3% through October 30, 2026.
Does BBEM pay dividends?
Yes. BBEM pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months before October 27, 2026, it paid $3.52 per share, a yield of 4.89%. The money comes from dividends paid by the companies it owns, so payments can rise or fall from one quarter to the next. Exchange rates against the US dollar also affect how much holders receive. Dividends from a stock fund like this are not fixed or guaranteed.
What are BBEM's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, BBEM's largest holding was Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing at 14.3% of assets. Next came Samsung Electronics at 6.4% (plus 0.8% in its preferred shares), SK hynix at 5.1%, Tencent at 3.0% and Alibaba at 2.2%. The top ten made up 35.6% of the fund, out of 1,461 holdings. By country, Taiwan was 25.1%, South Korea 18.6%, India 13.4% and China 10.3%. Another 10.8% was in companies registered in the Cayman Islands, such as Tencent and Alibaba.
How has BBEM performed since it launched?
BBEM launched on May 10, 2023, so its record is short. Its prospectus shows a 6.2% return in 2024 and 31.58% in 2025, and an average of 16.06% a year from launch through December 31, 2025. Price-based figures show it was up 14.7% for 2026 through October 27, 2026, and 14.6% over the 12 months to that date. Its deepest drop was 17.4%, from October 2024 to April 2025. Past results don't predict future returns.
