What could go wrong
- Heavy dependence on one customer, Popular. Popular supplied about 29% of revenue in fiscal 2025. Its main services contract ends in 2028. Losing it, or granting big price concessions to renew it, could sharply cut revenue, profits and cash flow.
- Merchant business leans on Banco Popular referrals. Banco Popular refers merchants to EVERTEC and sponsors it into card networks under an agreement ending in 2035. If that agreement lapses or is terminated, EVERTEC may have to hand over up to 50% of its merchant contracts.
- Puerto Rico tax break could end. EVERTEC Group benefits from a preferential tax exemption grant from Puerto Rico's government. If it fails to renew the grant or meet its terms, taxes could rise, hurting earnings and the share price.
- Currency and political risk in Latin America. Latin America produced 36.8% of fiscal 2025 revenue. Weaker local currencies, capital controls (limits on moving money across borders), inflation or political instability there could shrink earnings in US dollars.
- Large debt load. As of June 30, 2026, total debt was about $1.29 billion against $261 million of cash and investments. Debt limits flexibility and adds interest-rate risk. Breaking loan conditions (covenants) could make debt due early.
- Outages, breaches and merchant fraud. EVERTEC runs mission-critical payment and banking systems. A cyberattack, data theft or system failure could disrupt clients and damage its reputation. It may also absorb losses from merchant fraud or unpaid merchant obligations.

For income and retirement investors
EVERTEC pays a small, flat dividend of $0.20 per share. It paid that amount in every fiscal year from 2020 through 2025. In fiscal 2025 the dividend used about 9% of earnings and 6.3% of free cash flow (cash left after running and investing in the business). The yield was 0.64% as of October 28, 2026, so the stock offers little income. The company returns more cash through buybacks. It spent $309 million on buybacks over fiscal 2021–2025, against $67 million in dividends. The share count fell 17% between October 2021 and July 2026. Buybacks can lift per-share earnings, but they put no cash in a retiree's pocket.
The shares have fallen sharply in downturns. They dropped 45.7% in the 2020 COVID crash and regained their prior high about 4.9 months after the low. In the 2022 bear market they fell 38.2% and had not regained their early-2022 peak as of October 28, 2026. A single stock like EVERTEC carries more risk than a diversified fund.
Questions investors ask
How does EVERTEC make money?
EVERTEC earns fees for processing payments and running technology for banks, merchants, corporations and governments, mainly in Puerto Rico and Latin America. Revenue was $932 million in fiscal 2025. Latin America Payments and Solutions brought in 36.8%, Business Solutions 26.8%, Merchant Acquiring 20.4% and Payment Services for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean 16%. Most revenue is recurring, tied to everyday transactions and contracts of one to six years.
Does EVERTEC raise its dividend every year?
No. EVERTEC pays a dividend but has held it flat at $0.20 per share in every fiscal year from 2020 through 2025. The yield was 0.64% as of October 28, 2026. The payout was small, at about 9% of fiscal 2025 earnings. The company has returned far more cash through share buybacks: $309 million over fiscal 2021–2025, against $67 million in dividends.
Who is EVERTEC's biggest customer?
Popular, the parent of Banco Popular, is EVERTEC's biggest customer by far. It accounted for about 29% of revenue in the year ended December 31, 2025. Its main services agreement runs through September 2028, and a merchant-referral agreement with Banco Popular ends in 2035. EVERTEC warns that losing these contracts, or giving large concessions to extend them, could seriously hurt revenue, profits and the share price.
How much debt does EVERTEC have?
A substantial amount. As of June 30, 2026, EVERTEC had about $1.29 billion of total debt and $261 million of cash and investments, leaving net debt of roughly $1.03 billion. Shareholders' equity was $641 million. The company lists its debt as a risk. It limits flexibility and exposes EVERTEC to interest-rate changes. Breaking loan covenants (conditions set by lenders) could make the debt due early.
How has EVERTEC stock performed over the long term?
Unevenly. Based on share price changes as of October 28, 2026, the stock gained 2.8% over one year, lost 28% in total over five years, and gained 120% in total over ten years, about 8.2% a year. It fell about 15% in both 2024 and 2025. The stock has also swung widely: its largest drop over the prior three years was 46.3%.
