The short version

Pacer Data and Digital Revolution ETF (TRFK) is an index fund that holds about 90 global companies earning at least half their revenue from storing, moving or processing data. That group runs from chipmakers to makers of network and cooling equipment. The fund leans heavily on semiconductors: NVIDIA, Broadcom and Micron made up about a quarter of assets as of July 31, 2026. Its 0.49% expense ratio is higher than all eight similar tech funds it was compared with.

How it works

TRFK tracks the Pacer Data Transmission and Communication Revolution Index. The index was created in 2022 by Index Design Group, an affiliate of the fund's adviser, Pacer Advisors. To join, a company must earn at least 50% of its revenue from a list of data-related businesses at the time it is added. The list includes semiconductors, storage devices, software, data processing and hosting, cybersecurity and wireless equipment. It also covers the power, cooling and wiring gear that data centers rely on. A company must also be worth at least $1 billion, trade at least $2 million a day on average, and have its main listing on a major exchange. The index provider screens candidates using company filings, analyst reports and trade publications.

Stocks are weighted by free-float market value, meaning the value of shares available to the public, so the largest companies count the most. No stock can exceed 10% of the index. Stocks above 4.5% can't add up to more than 45% combined, and any excess is spread across the smaller holdings. The index adds and drops companies each May and resets weights in February, May, August and November. Between those dates, winning stocks can drift above the caps.

The fund buys every stock in the index. It is non-diversified, which means it can put more money into a few companies. As of June 30, 2026, the index had 90 stocks, 7 of them listed outside the US. The fund uses no leverage, options or derivatives.

What it really costs

  • TRFK charges 0.49% a year, versus an average of 0.25% for the similar funds below (9th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $50 in the first year and $616 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
TRFK$50$157$274$616

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, high-volatility bet on chip and data-infrastructure stocks, with almost no income and a short track record.

TRFK's record is short and unusually strong, so it says little about how the fund handles bad markets. It launched in June 2022. Its history doesn't cover the 2008 crisis, the 2020 crash or the 2022 bear market. Its worst full calendar year, 2025, still returned 26.8%. Within that year, though, it fell 29.1% from February 18 to April 8, 2025, and took about 2.3 months to recover. As of October 27, 2026, its one-year beta was 2.33, meaning it tended to move more than twice as much as the overall market. Anyone who has to sell in a slump could lock in steep losses. Income is close to zero: the trailing yield was 0.03%, paid twice a year. Under the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $616 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a concentrated bet on chips, storage and networking. NVIDIA, Broadcom and Micron made up about 25% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
  • Those seeking some non-US data companies, such as SK hynix, ARM and Schneider Electric. About 23% of assets sat outside the US as of July 31, 2026.
  • Investors keeping it as a small add-on to a broad core fund, who can live with drops like the 29.1% slide in early 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors. The 0.49% expense ratio compares with 0.08% for XLK and 0.09% for VGT, which overlap 46% and 37% with TRFK.
  • Retirees who need income. The trailing yield was 0.03% as of October 27, 2026, paid only twice a year.
  • Those wanting a long record through bear markets. The fund launched in June 2022, so it has no history through 2008, 2020 or the 2022 slump.

Questions investors ask

Is TRFK good for retirement?

TRFK is more of a small, higher-risk add-on than a core retirement holding. It is concentrated in chip and data stocks. As of October 27, 2026, its one-year volatility was 39.4% and its beta was 2.33. It fell 29.1% in early 2025 before recovering. Its 0.03% yield provides almost no income. Its 0.49% expense ratio is also above the 0.25% average of similar funds.

What's the difference between TRFK and XLK?

TRFK costs much more and holds a narrower, more global mix. It charges 0.49% a year against 0.08% for the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK). The two shared 46% of their holdings in their latest reports. TRFK also owns non-US firms such as SK hynix and Schneider Electric, plus data-center power and cooling suppliers. TRFK's one-year return was 26.8% as of October 27, 2026. XLK's was 20.1% as of October 30, 2026.

Does TRFK pay dividends?

Yes, but the payments are tiny. TRFK pays twice a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.025 per share, a trailing yield of 0.03%. That is common for funds full of fast-growing chip and software companies, which tend to pay little or nothing to shareholders. Anyone looking for regular income from a fund would get very little here.

What are TRFK's top holdings?

As of July 31, 2026, TRFK's largest holdings were NVIDIA (9.4%), Broadcom (9.1%), Micron Technology (6.5%), Advanced Micro Devices (5.4%), SK hynix (5.3%) and Cisco Systems (4.7%). Next came Palo Alto Networks, ARM Holdings, Intel and Arista Networks. The top 10 made up about 53% of the fund, spread across 94 holdings. About 77% of assets were in US companies, and South Korea was the largest foreign country at 5.4%.

How has TRFK performed since launch?

TRFK has posted strong gains since its June 2022 launch, though it hasn't yet faced a long bear market. Its prospectus shows returns of 67.07% in 2023, 38.31% in 2024 and 26.84% in 2025. Its average annual return since inception was 30.17% as of December 31, 2025. Its strongest quarter gained 32.4% and its weakest lost 11.68%, both in 2025. It was up 43.7% for 2026 through October 27.
