The short version

Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ) is an index fund that holds the 30 largest US-listed semiconductor companies in the PHLX Semiconductor Index, led by Micron, NVIDIA and Broadcom. What sets it apart is cost: its 0.19% expense ratio is about half the 0.38% average of similar funds and below the 0.35% charged by iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX), whose holdings overlap 82%. The trade-off is heavy concentration in one volatile industry.

How it works

SOXQ aims to track the PHLX Semiconductor Index, which Nasdaq compiles. The index measures the 30 largest US-listed companies that design, distribute, make or sell semiconductors, including memory chips, microprocessors, integrated circuits and chipmaking equipment. To qualify, a company must be in the semiconductors or production technology equipment subsector of the Industry Classification Benchmark. It must also be worth at least $100 million, have traded at least 1.5 million shares in each of the prior six months, and be listed on Nasdaq, the NYSE, NYSE American or Cboe. Foreign firms can qualify through American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are US-traded shares that stand for a non-US stock, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.

The index is modified market-cap weighted. That means bigger companies get bigger weights, with adjustments set by the index rules. Invesco uses full replication: it owns every stock in the index in roughly the same proportions and puts at least 90% of total assets in index securities. The fund uses no leverage or options, and it held no derivatives as of May 31, 2026. Portfolio turnover was 24%.

The fund is non-diversified and must put more than 25% of its assets in semiconductor companies. As of May 31, 2026, its 10 largest holdings made up 63% of assets, led by Micron (11.8%), NVIDIA (8.9%) and Broadcom (8.7%). Big moves in a few stocks can swing the whole fund.

What it really costs

  • SOXQ charges 0.19% a year, versus an average of 0.4% for the similar funds below (3rd of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $19 in the first year and $242 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

SOXQ is a concentrated bet on one cyclical industry that has seen deep, fast losses, so it fits best as a small add-on to a broader core.

SOXQ adds growth exposure to chipmakers, not income. Its trailing 12-month yield was 0.32% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. The fund launched in June 2021, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis or the 2020 crash. It lost 35.01% in 2022, including a 25.18% drop in the quarter ended June 30, 2022. Its deepest drop in price data starting October 2022 was 39.4%, from July 10, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It got back to its old high on August 13, 2025. Anyone forced to raise cash near that low would have locked in steep losses. Volatility over the year to October 27, 2026 was 45.4%. The cost is low: about $19 in the first year on $10,000, under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want low-cost semiconductor exposure: 0.19% a year, compared with 0.35% for SOXX and SMH and a 0.38% peer average.
  • People who already hold a broad core fund and want a small add-on focused on Micron, NVIDIA, Broadcom and 27 other chip companies.
  • Long-term holders who can sit through drops like the 35.01% loss in 2022 and the 39.4% fall from July 2024 to April 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees who need steady income: the trailing yield was just 0.32% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Anyone who wants broad diversification: the fund holds about 30 stocks, all in one industry, with 63% in its top 10 holdings as of May 31, 2026.
  • People who may need to raise cash on short notice, since volatility was 45.4% over the year to October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is SOXQ good for retirement?

SOXQ can play a small, higher-risk role, but it is not built for stability or income. It holds about 30 chip stocks and lost 35.01% in 2022. It then fell 39.4% between July 10, 2024 and April 8, 2025 before recovering by August 13, 2025. Its yield was 0.32% as of October 27, 2026. Retirement savers often treat a fund like this as a satellite next to broader holdings rather than as a core position.

What's the difference between SOXQ and SOXX?

The main differences are cost and size. SOXQ charges 0.19% a year; iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) charges 0.35%. Their holdings overlap 82%. SOXX is far larger, with $47.8 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026, compared with SOXQ's $2.4 billion as of May 31, 2026. SOXX returned 66.5% over one year and 52.2% a year over three years as of October 29, 2026. SOXQ returned 60.9% and 53.6% as of October 27, 2026.

Does SOXQ pay dividends?

Yes, SOXQ pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. Its trailing 12-month yield was 0.32% as of October 27, 2026, or about $0.29 per share. Many chip companies put their cash back into research and factories rather than paying large dividends, so most of the fund's return has come from price changes. Investors looking mainly for income may want to compare it with funds built for that purpose.

What are SOXQ's top holdings?

As of May 31, 2026, SOXQ's largest holdings were Micron Technology (11.8%), NVIDIA (8.9%), Broadcom (8.7%), Advanced Micro Devices (6.4%), Intel (6.3%) and Marvell Technology (6.3%). Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Lam Research and KLA rounded out the top 10, which together made up 63% of the fund. About 85% of assets were in US companies, with smaller stakes in firms such as NXP Semiconductors and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.

What is SOXQ's expense ratio?

SOXQ's expense ratio is 0.19% a year, according to its prospectus filed December 18, 2025. That ranks third-lowest among nine similar semiconductor and tech funds, whose average is 0.38%. VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) charges 0.35%, and Xtrackers Semiconductor Select Equity ETF (CHPS) charges 0.15%. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $19 after one year and $242 after 10 years.
