What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jul 31, 2026, investors withdrew a net $2.24B (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +6.87%, -0.60%, -1.27%.

How it works

The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation. It does not track an index. Under normal conditions, it puts at least 80% of its net assets in U.S. stocks that its manager, BlackRock Fund Advisors (BFA), believes can grow earnings faster than average. BFA uses a systematic framework built on proprietary quantitative models. The framework has three steps: identify themes, including emerging and structural trends; evaluate those themes and the companies tied to them; and build the portfolio. The fund aims to hold several themes at once rather than betting on a single one.

In practice, the result looks like a large-company U.S. stock fund. As of July 31, 2026, the top 10 holdings made up about 45% of assets, and technology stocks were about 37%. Apple (8.2%), NVIDIA (7.5%), Microsoft (6.5%) and Amazon (5.7%) led the list. Alphabet's two share classes added about 6.5% combined. Portfolio turnover was 45%, a measure of how much of the portfolio the manager replaced over the year.

The prospectus also allows derivatives such as futures, swaps and options. They can be used to manage risk, to stand in for stocks temporarily, or to try to add income or gains. Derivatives can magnify both gains and losses. As of July 31, 2026, the fund's only derivative was a tiny S&P 500 futures position, and cash was about 1% of assets.

What it really costs

  • THRO charges 0.57% a year, versus an average of 0.08% for the similar funds below (9th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $58 in the first year and $714 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It holds a broad mix of large U.S. stocks, but its model-driven thematic approach and 0.57% fee make it a better fit as a smaller position next to a low-cost core fund.

THRO launched in December 2021, so it has no record in the 2008 or 2020 crashes. It did go through the 2022 bear market. It lost 17.79% that year, its worst full calendar year, including 17.55% in the second quarter alone. The available price history starts in October 2024. In that period its deepest drop was 19.1%, from January 23 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by June 27, 2025, about 2.6 months later. A retiree who needed cash during a drop like that would have had to cash out shares at lower prices. Income is minor: the trailing yield was 0.29% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Costs add up too: the SEC's standard example puts expenses at $714 over 10 years on $10,000. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want BlackRock's active, model-driven approach to rotating among U.S. growth themes, spread across 240 stocks as of July 31, 2026.
  • Long-term investors comfortable with concentration: the top 10 holdings, led by Apple, NVIDIA and Microsoft, were 44.8% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
  • Investors willing to pay 0.57% for active management: it returned 14.2% over one year to October 27, 2026, versus 13.5% for Vanguard Mega Cap ETF.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: its portfolio overlapped about 61% with Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), which charges 0.03% a year versus THRO's 0.57%.
  • Retirees who rely on portfolio income: it paid little, with a yield of 0.29% over the past year as of October 27, 2026.
  • Cautious investors: it lost 17.8% in 2022 and fell 19.1% between January and April 2025, with a record dating only to December 2021.

Questions investors ask

Is THRO good for retirement?

It can fill a small role, but it is not a typical core fund. THRO is an actively managed mix of about 240 large U.S. stocks. It charges 0.57% a year, and its trailing yield was only 0.29% as of October 27, 2026. It fell 17.79% in 2022. It also dropped 19.1% between January and April 2025 before recovering by late June. Its record begins in December 2021, so it has not been through a long downturn.

What is the THRO expense ratio?

THRO's expense ratio is 0.57%, with no fee waiver, according to its prospectus filed November 24, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, a $10,000 investment earning 5% a year would cost about $58 after one year, $318 after five years and $714 after ten. That ranks it 9th of 9 on cost among similar funds, which average 0.08%. S&P 500 funds that share 61% of its holdings, such as IVV and VOO, charge 0.03%.

THRO vs MGC: what's the difference?

The main differences are approach and cost. Vanguard Mega Cap ETF (MGC) has more holdings in common with THRO than any other similar fund, at 67%. It charges 0.07% a year, compared with THRO's 0.57%. THRO's manager uses quantitative models to pick stocks tied to several themes, while MGC focuses on the largest U.S. companies. For the year ended October 27, 2026, THRO returned 14.2% and MGC returned 13.5%. That one-year edge is small next to a fee gap that applies every year.

Does THRO pay dividends?

Yes, THRO pays dividends every quarter, but they are small. Over the trailing 12 months it paid about $0.13 per share, a yield of 0.29% as of October 27, 2026. The low payout fits the fund's goal of long-term capital appreciation and its focus on companies with above-average earnings growth potential, such as NVIDIA, Microsoft and Amazon. Investors who want steady income from their portfolio would need other sources.

How has THRO performed since launch?

Its results have swung widely. According to its prospectus, THRO lost 17.79% in 2022, then gained 24.35% in 2023 and 31.91% in 2024. That works out to an average annual return of 11.24% from its December 2021 launch through December 31, 2024. Based on prices, it returned 15.04% in 2025 and 14.93% in 2026 through October 27. Its 14.2% one-year return as of October 27, 2026 ranked 1st of 9 among similar funds. Past returns don't predict future results.
