How it works
The fund aims to track the Solactive GBS United States 500 Index TR, which measures 500 of the largest companies listed on US stock exchanges. The index includes REITs (real estate investment trusts, which are companies that own property and pass rental income to shareholders). Each company is weighted by free-float market value, which counts only the shares the public can trade. Bigger companies therefore take up more of the fund. As of July 31, 2026, NVIDIA was 7.2% of the fund, Apple 6.8% and Microsoft 5.3%. The top 10 positions made up 37.1% of 507 holdings.
The index is rebuilt every quarter, in February, May, August and November. Every company ranked in the top 425 by market value gets in. Existing members ranked 426 to 600 keep their place until the index reaches 500 companies. This buffer cuts down on trading at the edges, and the prospectus reports portfolio turnover of 2.1%.
The fund normally holds every stock in the index at its index weight. It may hold a representative sample instead if full replication would be impractical or costly. Because it mirrors the index, it can be concentrated in one area. Information technology was about 43.1% of the index as of December 31, 2025. The fund makes no attempt to soften market declines.
What it really costs
- BKLC charges 0% a year, versus an average of 0.14% for the similar funds below (1st of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $0 in the first year and $0 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BKLC | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
In a retirement portfolio
It offers broad, low-turnover exposure to about 500 large US companies at a stated cost of 0%, which fits the central stock position of a long-term portfolio.
BKLC could serve as the main US stock holding in a long-term portfolio. The prospectus filed February 27, 2026, lists a 0% expense ratio, and the SEC's standard $10,000 example shows $0 in fund costs over 10 years. The fund launched April 9, 2020, after the 2020 crash had already bottomed, so it has no record from 2008 or 2020. In the 2022 bear market it fell 26.1% between January 3 and October 12, 2022, and took 14 months to regain its earlier peak, in December 2023. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -20.4%. Anyone who had to sell shares in a year like that would lock in losses, so holding a cash or bond reserve may help. The yield was 1.07% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, which is modest. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Cost-focused index investors: the prospectus lists a 0% expense ratio, versus a 0.14% average for similar funds.
- Long-term holders who want about 500 large US companies in one fund, with low portfolio turnover of 2.1%.
- Investors happy with S&P 500-like results: 14.43% average annual return over five years through December 31, 2025, matching the S&P 500.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors seeking meaningful income: the trailing yield was 1.07% as of October 27, 2026.
- Those uneasy with heavy tech exposure: information technology was about 43% of the index as of December 31, 2025.
- Those who prefer the largest funds: BKLC had about $5.5 billion in net assets (July 31, 2026), versus roughly $1.7 trillion for VOO (June 30, 2026).

Questions investors ask
Is BKLC really a zero-fee ETF?
Yes, based on its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. It lists a 0% management fee and a 0% total expense ratio. The SEC's standard example, which assumes $10,000 invested and a 5% annual return, shows $0 in fund costs over 1, 3, 5 and 10 years. Investors can still pay trading costs, such as the gap between buying and selling prices. Fees can also change in future prospectuses, so it is worth checking the latest one.
What's the difference between BKLC and VOO?
The two funds track different indexes but own nearly the same stocks. BKLC follows the Solactive GBS United States 500 Index, while VOO follows the S&P 500, and their holdings overlap by about 92%. BKLC's stated expense ratio is 0%, compared with 0.03% for VOO. Over the five years to December 31, 2025, BKLC returned 14.43% a year, the same as the S&P 500. VOO is far larger, with about $1.7 trillion in net assets as of June 30, 2026, against about $5.5 billion for BKLC as of July 31, 2026.
Does BKLC pay dividends?
Yes, BKLC pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.53 per share, a yield of 1.07%. That income comes from the dividends of the roughly 500 large US companies it holds. Many of its biggest holdings, such as NVIDIA, Amazon and Tesla, pay little or nothing. As a result, BKLC is better understood as a growth-oriented stock fund than as an income fund.
How much did BKLC lose in 2022?
BKLC returned -20.4% for calendar year 2022, its worst year on record. From its peak to its low, it fell 26.1%, reaching bottom on October 12, 2022. It took 14 months to recover and was back above its earlier peak in December 2023. Its worst single quarter was the one ending June 30, 2022, at -17.12%. Because the fund launched in April 2020, it has no record from the 2008 financial crisis.
What are BKLC's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, BKLC's largest holdings were NVIDIA at 7.2%, Apple at 6.8%, Microsoft at 5.3% and Amazon at 4.0%. Alphabet's two share classes added up to about 6.0%, and Broadcom made up 2.8%. Together, the top 10 positions were 37.1% of the fund's 507 holdings. That makes BKLC heavily tied to large technology companies, even though it owns hundreds of stocks.
