How it works

NUDV is an index fund. It tries to match the Nuveen ESG USA High Dividend Yield Index, which MSCI owns and calculates. Nuveen has no say over which stocks go in. The index starts from the MSCI USA Index, a broad list of US large- and mid-cap companies. It removes companies with significant activity in alcohol, tobacco, nuclear power, gambling, or weapons and firearms. It also removes companies above certain carbon ownership and emissions limits. It looks for stocks with higher-than-average dividend yields that appear sustainable and persistent, along with quality traits.

MSCI ESG Research scores each company against its industry peers on issues such as climate, waste, employee relations, product safety and business ethics. Within each sector, the highest-scoring companies are added until they make up 50% of that sector's market value in the starting index. Stocks are weighted by company size within their sector. The weights are then adjusted so the index's sector mix stays close to the broader market's. The index had 88 stocks as of December 31, 2025, and is rebalanced quarterly, in February, May, August and November.

The fund buys essentially all the index stocks in about the same proportions. It does not use derivatives and does not move to cash in falling markets. Portfolio turnover, the share of holdings replaced in a year, was 66%. Financials made up 24.2% of the fund as of July 31, 2026.

What it really costs

  • NUDV charges 0.26% a year, versus an average of 0.3% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.25% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $27 in the first year and $331 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleIncome

NUDV aims to hold US companies with high, sustainable dividends and pays quarterly, though its 2.28% trailing yield is modest.

NUDV could add quarterly dividends from established US companies such as Coca-Cola, Merck and Procter & Gamble. Its trailing 12-month yield was 2.28% as of October 27, 2026, so the income is moderate, not large. The fund launched in September 2021, so it has no record in the 2008 or 2020 crashes. In the 2022 bear market, it fell 20.1% from January 4 to September 30, 2022. It took about 14.5 months from that low to recover, on December 14, 2023. Its worst calendar year, 2022, was a 7.65% loss, according to the prospectus. Anyone forced to sell shares during that slump would have sold at a loss. Costs are low: $331 over 10 years on $10,000 in the SEC's standard example. With 24.2% in financials, a banking scare could hit it hard. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want US dividend stocks screened on ESG scores, with tobacco, alcohol, gambling, weapons and nuclear power companies left out.
  • Holders who want quarterly income from large companies like Coca-Cola, Goldman Sachs and Merck; the trailing yield was 2.28% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Cost-aware ESG investors: the 0.26% expense ratio is slightly below the 0.30% average of similar funds.

Look elsewhere if

  • Investors focused on cost and size: iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO) charges 0.08% and is far larger, though it doesn't use ESG screens.
  • Anyone wary of heavy bank exposure, since financials made up 24.2% of the fund as of July 31, 2026.
  • Those who want a long or strong record: launched in September 2021, it ranked 7th of 9 similar funds on three-year returns through October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Does NUDV pay monthly dividends?

No. NUDV pays dividends quarterly, not monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.77 per share, a trailing yield of 2.28%. The payout depends on the dividends of the roughly 85 companies it holds, so it can rise or fall from one quarter to the next. Investors who need monthly cash flow would need to plan around the quarterly schedule or combine it with other holdings.

What is the NUDV expense ratio?

NUDV's expense ratio is 0.26% a year, per its prospectus filed February 26, 2026. That includes a 0.25% management fee. In the SEC's standard example, which assumes $10,000 invested and a 5% annual return, costs come to about $27 after one year, $84 after three, $146 after five and $331 after ten. The average for similar funds is 0.30%. iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO), a much larger dividend fund without ESG screens, charges 0.08%.

NUDV vs NULV: what's the difference?

Both are Nuveen ESG index funds that charge 0.26%, and about 56% of their holdings overlap. NUDV picks stocks for high, sustainable dividend yields. Nuveen ESG Large-Cap Value ETF (NULV) targets large value stocks more broadly. NULV is much bigger, with about $2.2 billion in net assets as of July 31, 2026, compared with about $50 million for NUDV. Over the year to October 27, 2026, NULV returned 23.7% and NUDV returned 17.7%.

Is NUDV good for retirement income?

It may suit retirees who want ESG-screened dividend income, but it has limits. The yield was a moderate 2.28% as of October 27, 2026, and it pays quarterly. In 2022, the fund fell 20.1% from peak to low and took about 14.5 months from the low to recover. At about $50 million in net assets, it is a small fund. Small funds generally face a higher chance of being closed than large ones.

What stocks are in NUDV?

As of July 31, 2026, NUDV held 85 US stocks. The largest were Coca-Cola (2.7%), Goldman Sachs (2.6%), Morgan Stanley (2.4%), Merck (2.4%) and Procter & Gamble (2.3%). The top 10 made up just 22.7% of the fund, so no single company dominates. Financials were the biggest sector at 24.2%, followed by industrials at 10.8%, health care at 10.7% and consumer staples at 10.3%. Technology was only 7.7%.
