How it works

EVUS, from BlackRock's iShares, tracks the MSCI USA Value Extended ESG Focus Index. It starts with the MSCI USA Value Index: large and midsize U.S. companies whose shares MSCI judges inexpensive relative to book value (assets minus liabilities), expected earnings over the next 12 months, and dividends. That parent index covers roughly half the market value of the MSCI USA Index.

MSCI then drops companies tied to tobacco, controversial weapons, civilian firearms, thermal coal and oil sands, plus those in severe, ongoing controversies such as alleged human rights abuses. It scores the rest on how well they manage ESG (environmental, social and governance) risks, compared with industry peers. A computer optimization model sets weights that tilt toward higher scorers while keeping risk and return close to the parent index, so a stock's weight reflects more than company size. At each quarterly rebalance, the index's ESG score must be at least 10% better than the parent's.

BlackRock uses representative sampling: it holds a mix of index stocks that together resemble the whole index, so it may not own every one. At least 90% of assets go into index stocks; up to 10% can go into futures, options, swaps and cash. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held 220 stocks, led by Microsoft at about 9.4%.

What it really costs

  • EVUS charges 0.18% a year, versus an average of 0.14% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $18 in the first year and $230 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
EVUS$18$58$101$230
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDiversifier

It adds a tilt toward value companies, such as banks, insurers, drugmakers and consumer staples makers, that may balance a portfolio heavy in growth stocks.

EVUS has a short record. Its price history covers about 3.7 years, so it was not around for the 2008, 2020 or 2022 market drops. Both of its full calendar years were positive: 14.2% in 2024 and 13.3% in 2025. Its deepest decline was 15.7%, from November 29, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It regained that ground by August 12, 2025, about four months later. Anyone who sold shares near the April low would have locked in the loss.

Income is modest. The trailing 12-month yield was 1.41% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. The 0.18% fee works out to $18 in the first year and $230 over 10 years on $10,000, using the SEC's standard example. The average fee among similar funds is 0.14%. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want U.S. value stocks while avoiding tobacco, controversial weapons, civilian firearms, thermal coal and oil sands companies, using MSCI's rules.
  • People who want an ESG tilt but returns that stay fairly close to the MSCI USA Value Index, which the fund's weighting model tracks.
  • Holders who are fine with quarterly dividends, a 1.41% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026, and a 0.18% yearly fee.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors. VTV, Schwab U.S. Large-Cap Value ETF (SCHV) and ILCV each charged 0.04% a year, compared with EVUS's 0.18%.
  • Those who want a long track record. EVUS has about 3.7 years of price history and missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 bear markets.
  • Investors who want less exposure to single stocks. Microsoft made up 9.4% of assets as of August 31, 2026, a large weight for a value fund.
