The short version

Xtrackers S&P MidCap 400 Scored & Screened ETF (MIDE), from DWS, tracks an environmental, social and governance (ESG)-screened version of the S&P MidCap 400 Index of mid-sized companies. It drops tobacco, controversial-weapons, thermal-coal and low-ESG-scoring companies while keeping industry weights close to the parent index. Its 0.15% annual fee is higher than broad mid-cap funds like IJH (0.05%), and its roughly $3.4 million in assets (August 31, 2026) is the smallest among peers.

How it works

MIDE is an index fund: it aims to match the S&P MidCap 400 Scored & Screened Index, before fees, rather than relying on a manager's picks. S&P Dow Jones Indices builds the index from the S&P MidCap 400. It first removes companies lacking an S&P Global environmental, social and governance (ESG) score, or scoring roughly in the worst 15–25% of their industry group or worst 10% overall. It also removes companies above set limits in tobacco, controversial weapons, thermal coal, oil sands, firearms or military weapons, and those Sustainalytics finds breaching UN Global Compact principles on human rights, labor, environment and corruption.

From the companies left, the index selects by ESG score, aiming to capture 75% of each industry group's float-adjusted market value (the value of shares the public can trade). That keeps the industry mix close to the S&P MidCap 400. Stocks are weighted by market value, so larger companies count more. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held 269 stocks; Twilio (1.5%), Illumina (1.3%) and TechnipFMC (1.3%) led, and the top 10 made up 11.25%.

The fund uses full replication, owning the index's stocks in about the same weights, but may use a representative sample if some shares are hard to obtain. Turnover, the share of the portfolio replaced in a year, was 28%.

What it really costs

  • MIDE charges 0.15% a year, versus an average of 0.17% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $15 in the first year and $192 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
MIDE$15$48$85$192

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It offers only ESG-screened mid-sized companies, which the prospectus says tend to be more volatile than large companies, through a very small fund.

MIDE could add ESG-screened mid-sized companies alongside a core of large-company funds. Launched in February 2021, it has no 2008 or 2020 record. In the 2022 bear market it fell 22.5% and needed about 18 months, until December 2023, to recover; 2022 was its worst calendar year, down 11.6%. Its deepest drop, 24.6% from November 2024 to April 2025, took about eight months to recover. Withdrawals during such slides would mean cashing out at low prices.

Income is modest: dividends, paid quarterly, came to a 1.27% yield over the 12 months to October 27, 2026. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs total $15 after one year and $192 after 10. Assets were about $3.4 million as of August 31, 2026; very small funds are sometimes closed, forcing holders to cash out. Past results don't predict the future; a plan should consider the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting mid-cap stocks that exclude tobacco, controversial weapons, thermal coal and low-ESG-scoring firms, with industry weights kept near the S&P MidCap 400's.
  • Long-term holders comfortable with mid-cap swings: it fell 22.5% in 2022 and 24.6% from November 2024 to April 2025, recovering both times.
  • Investors who value spreading money widely within an ESG screen: 269 stocks as of August 31, 2026, with the top 10 at 11.25%.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: SPMD (0.03%), IJH (0.05%) and IVOO (0.07%) also hold S&P mid-caps for less; XJH, another ESG-screened option, charges 0.12%.
  • Investors wary of very small funds: its roughly $3.4 million in assets as of August 31, 2026, was the smallest among nine similar funds.
  • Investors needing steady income or stability: the yield was 1.27% as of October 27, 2026, and it lost 15.73% in 2022's second quarter.

Questions investors ask

What does MIDE invest in?

MIDE holds mid-sized companies from the S&P MidCap 400 Index that pass environmental, social and governance (ESG) screens. As of August 31, 2026, it owned 269 stocks; the largest were Twilio (1.5%), Illumina (1.3%) and TechnipFMC (1.3%), and the top 10 made up 11.25% of assets. About 92% was in US companies, with small stakes in firms based in Ireland, the UK and Bermuda. The index excludes tobacco makers, controversial-weapons makers and thermal coal companies, among others.

Does MIDE pay dividends?

Yes, MIDE pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.47 per share, a yield of 1.27%. That income comes from the dividends of the mid-sized companies it holds, so it can rise or fall with their payouts. The fund is built to track an ESG-screened mid-cap index rather than to maximize income, so its yield is modest.

What's the difference between MIDE and XJH?

MIDE costs a bit more and is far smaller, though the two funds are similar. Both hold ESG-screened S&P mid-cap stocks, and their holdings overlap by about 71%. XJH, from iShares, charges 0.12% a year versus 0.15% for MIDE, and held about $419 million as of June 30, 2026, against MIDE's roughly $3.4 million as of August 31, 2026. Over the year to October 27, 2026, MIDE returned 14.7% versus 12% for XJH; over three years, 18.8% versus 17.8% a year.

What is MIDE's expense ratio?

MIDE's expense ratio, the annual fee taken from fund assets, is 0.15%, according to its prospectus filed December 18, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 growing 5% a year would incur $15 in costs after one year, $85 after five and $192 after 10. That is slightly below the 0.17% average of similar funds but above broad mid-cap funds such as SPMD (0.03%), IJH (0.05%) and IVOO (0.07%).

How has MIDE performed since it launched?

MIDE has gained since its February 2021 launch, with 2022 its only losing full calendar year, down 11.6%. The prospectus reports an average annual return of 6.75% from launch through December 31, 2024, and a one-year return of 11.21% for 2024. Based on market prices, it returned 14.7% in the year to October 27, 2026, and averaged 18.8% a year over three years, the top three-year result among nine similar funds. Past results don't predict future returns.
