How it works

IWLG does not track an index. New York Life hires Winslow Capital Management as subadvisor, and Winslow picks stocks one company at a time. This is called a "bottom-up" approach, and it works from company details rather than economic forecasts. Under normal conditions, at least 80% of assets go to large growth companies. The fund defines these as companies worth more than $10 billion when bought that Winslow judges to be growth companies. Signs Winslow uses include being in a growth index, or having earnings or sales growth above the market median.

Winslow looks for companies in growing markets that are gaining market share. It also wants lasting competitive advantages, high returns on invested capital and sound governance. It weighs environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors it considers material, but it does not rule out a stock on ESG grounds alone. It sells when a stock looks fully valued, when the business weakens, or when a position grows past its limits. Turnover was 139%. That means the fund traded more than the full value of its portfolio over a year.

The fund is "non-diversified," so it can put more money into single stocks than a diversified fund. As of July 31, 2026, it held 40 stocks, and the top 10 made up about 56% of assets. Up to 20% may go to foreign stocks or ADRs (US-traded shares of foreign companies). About 91% was in US companies.

What it really costs

  • IWLG charges 0.5% a year, versus an average of 0.36% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.75% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.32% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $51 in the first year and $740 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, actively managed growth fund that has swung more than the market, so it fits better as a smaller holding than as a core position.

IWLG could add a manager-picked tilt toward fast-growing large companies, but it is not a cushion. It launched in June 2022, so its record does not cover the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the full 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 23.2%, from January 23 to April 8, 2025. It regained that peak by June 24, 2025, about 2.5 months later. Its worst quarter was a loss of 8.87%, in the third quarter of 2023. A one-year beta of 1.4 as of October 27, 2026, means it moved more than the market. Someone who had to sell during a slide like early 2025 would lock in losses.

It provides almost no income: the trailing yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026. The SEC's standard example puts costs at $51 for the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want an active manager's picks among about 40 large growth stocks, led by Alphabet, Nvidia and Broadcom as of July 31, 2026.
  • Long-term holders who can keep it as a smaller satellite position and sit through drops like its 23.2% fall in early 2025.
  • People who don't need income from this holding, since it yielded about 0% and makes any distribution only once a year.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: index growth ETFs such as VONG and MGK charge 0.07%, compared with IWLG's 0.50% after a fee waiver.
  • Retirees who need dividends from their stock funds to cover spending, since IWLG's trailing yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Anyone wanting broad diversification: the top 10 holdings were about 56% of assets, and technology was the largest sector at about 39%.

Questions investors ask

Is IWLG an index fund or actively managed?

IWLG is actively managed and does not try to track an index. New York Life's subadvisor, Winslow Capital Management, picks stocks one by one. At least 80% of assets go to large growth companies worth more than $10 billion when bought. Winslow looks for things like growing markets, competitive advantages and high returns on capital. It also weighs ESG factors. The fund is non-diversified and held 40 stocks as of July 31, 2026.

What is the IWLG expense ratio?

IWLG's net expense ratio is 0.50%, according to its prospectus filed August 26, 2026. The management fee is 0.75%, and a 0.32% fee waiver brings the total down. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $51 in the first year and $740 over 10 years. That is above the 0.36% average for similar funds. It is also well above VONG and MGK, which each charge 0.07%.

What's the difference between IWLG and IWFG?

Both are NYLI ETFs run by Winslow Capital in a large-cap growth style, and their holdings overlapped by 74%. The NYLI Winslow Focused Large Cap Growth ETF (IWFG) charges 0.65%, compared with IWLG's 0.50%. It is also much smaller: $61 million in net assets versus about $312 million as of July 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, IWFG's one-year return was -2.6% versus 0.2% for IWLG. Their three-year annualized returns were close: 23.6% and 23.9%.

Does IWLG pay dividends?

Barely. IWLG's trailing 12-month yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026, with a distribution of about $0.0013 per share. Payments come annually. That fits its approach: growth companies tend to reinvest earnings rather than pay large dividends. The prospectus notes that without dividends, growth stocks may have less cushion in a falling market. Investors looking for portfolio income would need to get it from other holdings.

How has IWLG performed since launch?

IWLG returned 43.2% in 2023, 31.5% in 2024 and 14.62% in 2025, according to its prospectus. Its average annual return since its June 2022 launch was 25.04% through December 31, 2025. More recent results were weaker. The one-year price return was 0.2% as of October 27, 2026. That trailed the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF (IVW) at 8.5% but beat VONG at -2.3% (both as of October 30, 2026).
