How it works

The fund follows the Morningstar US Small Cap Broad Growth Extended Index. Morningstar builds the index and is independent of BlackRock, which manages the fund. Morningstar starts with a broad index that covers about 99.5% of the value of US stocks. It counts as small-cap the stocks that generally sit between the 90th and 99.5th percentile of market value. Small is relative here: the largest company in the index was worth $64.43 billion as of April 30, 2026. Morningstar then sorts these stocks into growth, value or blend. Growth stocks are those with higher than average past and forecast growth in earnings, sales, book value and cash flow.

Each stock is weighted by the value of its shares that are publicly available to trade, so bigger companies count for more. With 928 holdings, no single stock dominates. As of July 31, 2026, the largest holding, Okta, was 0.77% of the fund, followed by Guardant Health and Roku. The top 10 together made up 5.61%. Healthcare, industrials and technology made up a large share of the index as of April 30, 2026.

BlackRock uses representative sampling. This means the fund may not own every stock in the index but aims for a portfolio with similar traits. At least 80% of net assets must be in index stocks. The fund may use derivatives such as stock index futures and may lend up to one-third of its assets to other investors. The prospectus lists a 43% portfolio turnover rate.

What it really costs

  • ISCG charges 0.06% a year, versus an average of 0.19% for the similar funds below (2nd of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $6 in the first year and $77 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It adds smaller, fast-growing US companies at a very low cost, but its deep drops and tiny yield make it a poor fit as the center of a retirement portfolio.

ISCG adds fast-growing smaller US companies that large-company funds hold little of. It is cheap: under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $6 in fees over one year and $77 over 10 years. It is not an income fund. The trailing 12-month yield was 0.66% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Its swings are large. It fell 21.51% in the first quarter of 2020, and 2022 was its worst calendar year of the last decade, at minus 26.65%. Its deepest drop in the available price history was 37.8%, from November 2021 to June 2022. Recovery took about 29 months. Figures for 2008 aren't available here. Anyone who had to sell shares during a year like 2022 would have locked in losses. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors seeking low-cost small-cap growth exposure: the 0.06% expense ratio ranks 2nd lowest of nine similar funds, against a 0.19% average.
  • Long-term holders who can sit through deep drops, like the 37.8% fall from November 2021 that took about 29 months to recover.
  • Those wanting wide diversification across 928 smaller companies, with no single stock above 0.77% of assets as of July 31, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees who need income: the trailing 12-month yield was only 0.66% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Anyone who may need to sell within a few years: the fund lost 26.65% in 2022 and 21.51% in one 2020 quarter.
  • Investors who prefer a much larger fund: Vanguard's VBK held $47 billion as of June 30, 2026, versus ISCG's $971 million.

Questions investors ask

What does ISCG invest in?

ISCG holds smaller US companies that Morningstar classes as growth stocks. It tracks the Morningstar US Small Cap Broad Growth Extended Index. As of July 31, 2026, it owned 928 stocks. The largest were Okta at 0.77%, Guardant Health at 0.67% and Roku at 0.61%, and the top 10 made up just 5.61% of assets. As of April 30, 2026, healthcare, industrials and technology made up a large share of the index.

What's the difference between ISCG and VBK?

Both funds own small US growth companies, and about half their holdings overlap, but they differ in size and cost. ISCG charges 0.06% a year and Vanguard's VBK charges 0.07%. VBK is far larger, with $47 billion in assets as of June 30, 2026, compared with ISCG's $971 million as of July 31, 2026. Both returned 10.3% over one year. Over three years, ISCG returned 21.2% a year through October 27, 2026, and VBK returned 19.4% a year through October 30, 2026.

Does ISCG pay dividends?

Yes, ISCG pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. The trailing 12-month yield was 0.66% as of October 27, 2026, or about $0.41 per share. That is typical of growth companies, which tend to put profits back into the business rather than pay them out. Investors looking for steady income from their portfolio would get very little from this fund.

Is ISCG good for retirement?

ISCG may suit retirees as a small, higher-risk part of a diversified portfolio rather than a core holding. It costs only 0.06% a year, but it swings hard: it lost 26.65% in 2022 and 21.51% in the first quarter of 2020. Its deepest drop, 37.8%, took about 29 months to recover. Over the 10 years to December 31, 2025, it returned 10.24% a year, compared with 14.4% for the Morningstar US Market Index.

What is ISCG's expense ratio?

ISCG's expense ratio is 0.06%, according to its prospectus filed August 21, 2026. That ranks 2nd lowest among nine similar funds, whose average is 0.19%. In the SEC's standard example, someone investing $10,000 with a 5% yearly return would pay about $6 in costs over one year, $34 over five years and $77 over 10 years. Of the similar funds, only Schwab's SCHA, a broad small-cap fund at 0.04%, costs less.
