How it works
EMC does not track an index. Global X Management Company is the adviser, and Mirae Asset Global Investments (Hong Kong) is the sub-adviser. Together they invest at least 80% of net assets in stocks of emerging-market companies, or companies tied to those economies, that they expect to benefit from rising consumption and purchasing power. Under the prospectus, that can include consumer, financial, technology, healthcare and communication companies. So the fund can hold more than retailers and brands.
The managers pick stocks one at a time rather than first deciding which countries or sectors to favor. They screen for trading volume and company size, then study each business. Limits on position size, country and sector weights, and the number of holdings keep risk in check. There is no set rebalancing schedule. The fund trades often: its portfolio turnover was 84.6%. As of May 31, 2026, it held 69 positions, and the top 10 made up 47.9% of assets. Some holdings are depositary receipts, which are certificates listed abroad that stand for foreign shares. That is why the United Kingdom (14.9%) and the United States (14.0%) show up among its top countries next to Taiwan (20.3%).
Two mechanics matter to holders. First, EMC handles much of its share creation and redemption in cash, so it may have to sell stocks and may be less tax-efficient than most ETFs. Second, it may lend out securities worth up to one-third of its total assets.
What it really costs
- EMC charges 0.65% a year, versus an average of 0.44% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $66 in the first year and $810 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMC | $66 | $208 | $362 | $810 |
In a retirement portfolio
EMC is an actively managed emerging-markets fund that is heavy in Asian technology stocks, costs more than average and has had steep losing years, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a core holding.
EMC could add Asian and other emerging-market companies that a US-focused portfolio lacks, but the ride has been rough. Its prospectus record starts in 2016, before the ETF's May 2023 launch date. It shows a 16.7% drop in the first quarter of 2020, a 13.4% loss in 2021 and a 26.2% loss in 2022. Its average annual return through December 31, 2025, was a loss of 4.75% over five years. Anyone selling shares for spending money in 2022 would have sold after deep losses. Since 2023, its deepest price drop was 18.4%, and it recovered in about two months, by June 9, 2025. Income is small: the yield was 0.61% as of October 27, 2026, paid twice a year. Costs run $66 on $10,000 in the first year under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want managers to pick emerging-market stocks around a consumer-growth theme, and who accept large positions in Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor and SK hynix.
- Those holding a small add-on beside a broad core fund who can live with swings like the 26.2% loss in 2022.
- Investors who prefer manager judgment over an index and accept frequent trading, with portfolio turnover of 84.6%.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: similar index funds such as IEMG (0.09%) and SPEM (0.07%) charge far less than EMC's 0.65%.
- Those wanting mostly consumer brands and retailers: chip and electronics makers led the top holdings as of May 31, 2026.
- Income seekers and tax-sensitive investors: the yield was 0.61% as of October 27, 2026, and cash redemptions may make it less tax-efficient.

Questions investors ask
Why does EMC own Samsung and TSMC if it's a consumer ETF?
Because its managers define consumer growth broadly. The prospectus lets EMC own any emerging-market company expected to benefit from rising consumption and purchasing power, including technology, financial and communication companies. As of May 31, 2026, Samsung Electronics was 10.7% of assets. Taiwan Semiconductor took up about 6.2% in each of two share lines, and SK hynix and MediaTek were each over 5%. The top 10 holdings made up 47.9% of the fund.
What is the expense ratio of EMC ETF?
EMC's expense ratio is 0.65% a year, according to its prospectus filed March 27, 2026. All of it is the management fee, and there is no fee waiver. That is above the 0.44% average of eight similar funds and ranks 6th of 9 on cost. In the SEC's standard example of $10,000 earning 5% a year, costs would total about $66 after one year, $362 after five years and $810 after ten.
What's the difference between EMC and AVEM?
They share about 33% of their holdings, the most of any similar fund, but they differ in cost and size. Avantis Emerging Markets Equity ETF (AVEM) charges 0.33% against EMC's 0.65%. AVEM had about $28.1 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026, while EMC had $66.8 million as of May 31, 2026. AVEM's three-year annualized return was 22.3% as of October 30, 2026. EMC's was 15.5% as of October 27.
Does EMC pay dividends?
Yes, but not much. EMC pays distributions twice a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.21 per share, a trailing yield of 0.61%. That is less than its 0.65% annual expense ratio. This fits the fund's stated goal of long-term capital growth rather than income. Investors who want regular cash flow from emerging-market stocks may find EMC's payouts too small and too infrequent.
How has EMC ETF performed over the long term?
Unevenly. Its prospectus shows average annual returns through December 31, 2025, of 18.39% over one year, a loss of 4.75% over five years and 4.78% over ten years. That record goes back further than the ETF's May 2023 launch date. Calendar years ranged from a 47.68% gain in 2017 to a 26.2% loss in 2022. Based on price, it returned 9.5% over the year to October 27, 2026. Past results don't predict future returns.
