How it works
DFSE does not track an index. Dimensional Fund Advisors starts with emerging market companies in countries its Investment Committee has approved. These can include frontier markets, which are countries at an earlier stage of development. Each company's starting weight follows its market value, so bigger companies count for more. The fund owns companies of all sizes but leans moderately toward smaller companies, value stocks (shares priced low compared with the company's book value, its accounting net worth) and highly profitable firms. Managers can also adjust positions for short-term signals such as price momentum.
The sustainability rules focus on carbon. Dimensional ranks companies on the potential emissions from their fossil fuel reserves and on carbon intensity, which means emissions relative to the size of the business. It compares them with the broad market and with sector peers, and generally underweights or excludes the worst-ranked companies. As of July 31, 2026, the portfolio held 3,710 companies, with 26% of assets in Taiwan and 19% in South Korea.
Trading is flexible. It looks for available market liquidity while keeping turnover and costs in check, and portfolio turnover was 13%. The fund may own China A-shares, depositary receipts and variable interest entities (contract-based structures that give exposure to some Chinese companies). It may use futures to manage cash coming in and out, and it lends securities for extra income.
What it really costs
- DFSE charges 0.41% a year, versus an average of 0.25% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.35% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- The fee includes a 0.03% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $42 in the first year and $552 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DFSE | $42 | $138 | $243 | $552 |
In a retirement portfolio
It adds emerging market stocks with a carbon screen, but it swings more than the broad market, has a short track record and puts much of its money in Taiwan and South Korea.
DFSE could add emerging market stocks to a portfolio built mostly on US shares. It is volatile, and much of the fund sits in Asian technology companies. It launched on November 1, 2022, so it has no record through the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its weakest calendar year was 2024, which was still a 7.19% gain. Its deepest drop was 19.8%, from October 4, 2024, to April 8, 2025, and it had recovered by June 9, 2025. A few years of history may not show how far emerging markets can fall. That matters for anyone who may need to sell in a bad year. The yield was 2.09% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs are $42 after one year and $552 after 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors seeking broad emerging market stocks, about 3,710 holdings as of July 31, 2026, tilted toward smaller, cheaper and more profitable companies.
- Investors who want emerging market exposure that underweights or excludes companies with high carbon intensity or large fossil fuel reserves.
- Investors comfortable with heavy weights in Taiwan (26%) and South Korea (19%), led by Taiwan Semiconductor, SK hynix and Samsung Electronics.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors focused on cost: the 0.41% expense ratio compares with 0.09% for IEMG and 0.07% for VWO.
- Investors who want a long record: DFSE launched in November 2022 and has no history through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns.
- Investors who want plain market-weighted exposure: its value, size and carbon tilts can lag, as in 2025, when it trailed its benchmark index.

Questions investors ask
Is DFSE an ESG fund?
Yes, in a carbon-focused way. Dimensional ranks companies on potential emissions from their fossil fuel reserves and on carbon intensity, against the broad market and against sector peers. The worst-ranked companies are generally underweighted or excluded. Companies that look more sustainable on these measures get more weight. The prospectus warns that these rules shrink the pool of possible investments, so at times the fund may lag funds without them.
What is the DFSE expense ratio?
DFSE's expense ratio is 0.41%, according to its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. That includes a 0.35% management fee. It ranks 8th of 9 among similar funds on cost, against a group average of 0.25%. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), total costs are $42 after one year, $138 after three, $243 after five and $552 after 10.
What's the difference between DFSE and DFEM?
Both are Dimensional emerging market ETFs that use the same broad approach, and their holdings overlap by 51%. DFSE adds carbon-based sustainability rules. DFEM costs 0.39%, against 0.41% for DFSE. DFEM is also much larger, with about $9.0 billion in assets compared with DFSE's $602 million as of July 31, 2026. Through October 27, 2026, DFEM returned 14.6% over one year and 21.4% a year over three years. DFSE returned 9.4% and 19.7% over the same periods.
Does DFSE pay dividends?
Yes. DFSE pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.95 per share, a trailing yield of 2.09%. The payouts come from dividends on its emerging market stocks, plus some income from lending securities. They can rise or fall from year to year with company profits and exchange rates, so the payout is not fixed.
How has DFSE performed since it launched?
Its official returns, as of December 31, 2025, show a 27.7% gain over one year, compared with 31.38% for the MSCI Emerging Markets IMI Index. Since its November 2022 launch, it returned 19.04% a year, compared with 18.94% for the index. Its calendar-year returns were 14.49% in 2023, 7.19% in 2024 and 27.7% in 2025. Based on market prices through October 27, 2026, it gained 11% for the year to date.
