The short version

Dimensional Emerging Markets ex China Core Equity ETF (DEXC) is an actively managed fund owning thousands of emerging-market stocks outside China, mostly in Taiwan, South Korea and India. Rather than copying an index, it tilts toward smaller, lower-priced and more profitable companies; it trailed the MSCI Emerging Markets ex China Index in 2025, 26.7% to 34.6%. Its 0.43% yearly cost matches the peer average but exceeds index rivals like iShares' EMXC (0.25%).

How it works

DEXC is an actively managed ETF from Dimensional Fund Advisors. It does not copy an index, but it compares its results with the MSCI Emerging Markets ex China Index. Dimensional starts with a broad group of emerging-market stocks outside China, weighted by market value, so bigger companies count for more. That group can include frontier markets, which are earlier-stage emerging economies. The fund owns companies of all sizes. It leans toward smaller companies, value stocks (cheap compared with book value, roughly a company's net worth on its balance sheet) and highly profitable firms. It does this mainly by holding less of larger, pricier or less profitable companies.

Dimensional also adjusts positions based on shorter-term signals. These include price momentum and how fast a company's assets are growing. It trades patiently to keep costs down. Portfolio turnover was a low 5%, according to the prospectus filed February 27, 2026. Under normal conditions, at least 80% of net assets go into emerging-market stocks.

Some holdings are depositary receipts, which are shares of foreign companies that trade outside their home market. The fund may also use equity swaps. It can use futures to stay fully invested as cash flows in or out. As of July 31, 2026, it held a small S&P 500 E-mini futures position. The prospectus describes currency trades only for settling purchases and moving cash. That means holders are exposed to swings in foreign currencies against the dollar. The fund may also lend out its securities to earn extra income.

What it really costs

  • DEXC charges 0.43% a year, versus an average of 0.43% for the similar funds below (5th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.33% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.13% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $44 in the first year and $689 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
DEXC$44$166$300$689
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDiversifier

It offers broad exposure to emerging markets outside China that can complement US stocks, though its heavy weighting in chip stocks adds risk.

DEXC could add stocks from Taiwan, South Korea, India and other emerging markets outside China, which a US-focused portfolio may lack. Its record is short. It launched November 13, 2024, so it was not around for the 2008, 2020 or 2022 sell-offs. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 26.73%, behind its index's 34.61%. The available price data starts June 9, 2026. In that data, its deepest drop was 18.3%, from June 22 to July 29, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who needed to sell during that stretch would have locked in losses. The trailing yield was 1.17% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, so income is modest. Expenses were 0.43%, or about $44 in the first year on $10,000 under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors seeking emerging-market stocks without China who accept heavy weights in Taiwan (31.4%), South Korea (24.6%) and India (16%) as of July 31, 2026.
  • Long-term investors who favor Dimensional's research-based tilt toward smaller, lower-priced and more profitable companies, spread across 3,376 holdings as of July 31, 2026.
  • Those wanting modest quarterly income alongside stock exposure: the yield over the past year was 1.17% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: at 0.43% a year, it ranks 5th-cheapest of 7 comparable funds; iShares' EMXC charges 0.25% and SPDR's XCNY 0.15%.
  • Investors wary of single-stock risk: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing was 12.7% of assets and SK hynix 6.7% as of July 31, 2026.
  • Those wanting a long record or a calmer ride: launched November 13, 2024, the fund dropped 18.3% from June 22 to July 29, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is DEXC actively managed or an index fund?

DEXC is actively managed. Dimensional does not try to copy an index, but it compares results with the MSCI Emerging Markets ex China Index. It starts with emerging-market stocks outside China, weighted by company size. It then leans toward smaller, lower-priced and more profitable companies. It trades lightly: portfolio turnover was 5%, according to the prospectus filed February 27, 2026. Because of these tilts, its returns can differ noticeably from the index, in either direction.

What's the difference between DEXC and EMXC?

The main differences are approach and cost. iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ETF (EMXC) follows an MSCI index, as its name suggests, and charges 0.25%. DEXC charges 0.43% and tilts toward smaller, cheaper and more profitable companies. EMXC is far larger, with about $24.9 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. DEXC had $307.9 million as of July 31, 2026. About 52% of their holdings overlap. Avantis Emerging Markets ex-China Equity ETF (AVXC), at 0.33%, is another fund worth comparing.

Does DEXC pay a dividend?

Yes, DEXC pays dividends every quarter. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.87 per share, a trailing yield of 1.17%. That makes it a modest source of income. Most of its potential return comes from changes in the share price. Dividends from foreign companies can rise or fall with currency moves and local payout habits, so the amount may change from one payment to the next.

What are DEXC's top holdings?

As of July 31, 2026, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) was the largest holding at 12.7% of assets. SK hynix came next at 6.7%, then Samsung Electronics at 4.5%. The fund held another 3.1% in a second form of Samsung shares. The fund held 3,376 securities in all, and the top 10 made up 30.4% of assets. By country, Taiwan was 31.4%, South Korea 24.6% and India 16.0%.

How has DEXC performed since it launched?

DEXC returned 26.73% in 2025, its first full calendar year, but its benchmark, the MSCI Emerging Markets ex China Index, gained 34.61%. From its November 13, 2024 launch through December 31, 2025, the fund returned an average of 21.94% a year, compared with 28.05% for the index. Based on price, it was down 3.7% for the year through October 27, 2026. Its history is too short to judge long-term results.
