The business in plain English
Block, Inc., formerly named Square, Inc., builds payment and money tools for small businesses and everyday consumers. It runs two main businesses. Square sells card payment processing, point-of-sale software and hardware to sellers that range from sole proprietors to multinational businesses. In 2025, more than 4.5 million sellers took $250 billion in payments through Square. Cash App is a phone app that lets people send, receive, spend, save, borrow and invest money, and buy bitcoin. As of December 2025, it had 59 million monthly transacting actives across the United States. A transacting active is an account with at least one money transaction in the month.
Block makes money in three ways. Commerce Enablement brought in 47.6% of its $24.2 billion in 2025 revenue. It covers the fees Square charges on each card payment, plus software, hardware, the Cash App Card, buy now, pay later products and the TIDAL music service. The Bitcoin Ecosystem, at 35.1%, covers bitcoin buying and selling in Cash App and Square, plus the Bitkey wallet and Proto mining hardware. Financial Solutions, at 17.3%, includes Cash App Borrow loans, Instant Deposit, interest income, Square Loans and brokerage. Across all three, gross profit was $10.4 billion. Gross profit is revenue minus the direct costs of providing the services.
By segment, Cash App brought in 63.8% of 2025 revenue and Square 34.9%. Most sales are domestic: 91.7% of revenue came from the United States.

What could go wrong
- Bitcoin swings hit sales and holdings. Bitcoin products made up 35.1% of 2025 revenue, and Block also holds bitcoin as an investment. Falling crypto prices, market turmoil or theft of the digital keys guarding bitcoin could cause losses.
- Borrowers may fall behind on loans. Block lends through Cash App Borrow, Square Loans and buy now, pay later products. A weaker economy could push up defaults, and rule changes for buy now, pay later lending could limit it.
- Bank-like rules on many fronts. Block is a licensed money transmitter. It also owns a broker-dealer, Cash App Investing, and Square Financial Services, a Utah industrial loan company, which is a kind of bank. New rules or lapses could bring penalties.
- Job cuts and AI bet may backfire. Block announced a workforce reduction and reorganization in February 2026 that may rely more on AI tools. The company warns the changes may not deliver the intended benefits and could hurt results.
- Growth and profits have slowed. Revenue rose just 0.3% in 2025 while net income fell 54.9% to $1.31 billion. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, net income dropped 83.6% year over year, though revenue grew 9.3%.
- Dual-class shares limit outside shareholders' say. Block has two classes of shares, which concentrates voting control among people who held stock before the initial public offering (IPO), including many employees and directors. Public Class A shareholders have limited influence over company decisions.

For income and retirement investors
Block does not pay a dividend, so the shares produce no regular income. Any cash an income investor takes from this stock has to come from selling shares. Block returns cash through buybacks instead, which can shrink the share count. It spent $3.66 billion on repurchases from 2021 through 2025. That included $2.33 billion in 2025, close to that year's $2.42 billion of free cash flow (cash from operations minus capital spending).
The shares have been volatile. The price history here covers only about 1.8 years to October 28, 2026. It does not show how the stock held up in the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. In that span, it fell as much as 49.9% from a peak. Its one-year beta of 1.75 means it swung about 1.75 times as much as the broad market. Like any single stock, Block carries more risk than a diversified fund.
Questions investors ask
Does Block (XYZ) pay a dividend?
No. Block, Inc. does not pay a dividend, and it paid none from 2021 through 2025. It returns cash by buying back its own shares instead: $3.66 billion over 2021 to 2025, including $2.33 billion in 2025. The stock may suit investors focused on long-term growth more than those who need regular income. Any cash from it would have to come from selling shares.
How does Block make money?
Block makes money mainly from Cash App and Square. In 2025, Cash App brought in 63.8% of its $24.2 billion revenue and Square 34.9%. By type, 47.6% came from Commerce Enablement, which covers Square payment fees, software and hardware, the Cash App Card and buy now, pay later. Another 35.1% came from bitcoin, and 17.3% from Financial Solutions such as loans, Instant Deposit and interest income. About 91.7% of revenue came from the United States.
Is Block the same company as Square?
Yes. Block, Inc. was formerly named Square, Inc. Square is the business it started in February 2009 to help businesses accept card payments. Square is now one of Block's two reporting segments, alongside Cash App. It offers more than 30 products, and in 2025 more than 4.5 million sellers used it to take $250 billion in payments. Block also owns TIDAL, a music streaming service, and bitcoin hardware projects.
How much of Block's revenue comes from bitcoin?
About a third. Block's Bitcoin Ecosystem brought in $8.5 billion in 2025, or 35.1% of revenue. That covers bitcoin buying and selling in Cash App, Square Bitcoin, the Proto mining system and the Bitkey wallet. Block also holds bitcoin as an investment. Its annual report warns that bitcoin prices are volatile. It also warns that losing the private keys needed to access the bitcoin it holds for itself and its customers may be irreversible.
Is Block profitable?
Yes, but its profits have been uneven. Block earned $1.31 billion in 2025, down 54.9% from $2.90 billion in 2024, for a net margin of 5.4%. It lost $541 million in 2022. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, net income fell 83.6% from a year earlier to $88.5 million, even as revenue rose 9.3%. As of October 28, 2026, the shares traded at about 35.8 times 2025 earnings per share, a measure called the price-to-earnings ratio.
