The business in plain English
East West Bancorp owns East West Bank, the largest independent commercial bank headquartered in Southern California, with $80.4 billion in total assets as of December 31, 2025. It specializes in individuals and businesses operating in both the US and Asia, with a strong focus on the Asian American community. It has 96 US branches in California, Texas, New York, Washington, Georgia, Massachusetts and Nevada, plus branches in China and Hong Kong and representative offices in China and Singapore. A Chinese subsidiary holds a commercial banking license, which the company says makes it unique among US regional banks.
Most of its money comes from net interest income: the gap between the interest it earns on loans and the interest it pays depositors. In fiscal 2025 that was $2.55 billion of $2.93 billion in revenue. The other $379 million was noninterest income from services such as foreign exchange, treasury management (cash-handling services for companies), wealth management and hedging contracts. Lending spans commercial and residential real estate, construction, business loans and trade finance.
The bank reports three segments: Consumer and Business Banking, which serves customers through branches and digital banking; Commercial Banking, which makes commercial loans and gathers deposits; and Treasury and Other, which covers central functions such as treasury and tax credit investments.

What could go wrong
- Trade tensions between the US and Asia. Many customers have economic ties to Asia. Tariffs, export controls or other trade restrictions could hurt importers and exporters the bank lends to, cutting loan demand and making it harder for borrowers to repay.
- Running a bank in China and Hong Kong. Its Asian branches face foreign legal, tax and data-access rules, political risk, staffing challenges and currency swings. A downturn in Asian property or stock markets could hurt customers there.
- Heavy exposure to California real estate. Much of the loan book is secured by real estate, and that collateral is concentrated in California. A state recession or falling property values there could push up loan losses.
- Money-laundering and sanctions compliance. Cross-border banking brings heavy duties under the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money-laundering and sanctions rules. Compliance is costly, and lapses could bring penalties and reputational harm.
- Uninsured deposits can leave quickly. Part of its deposit balances sit above the FDIC insurance limit (the federal guarantee on bank accounts). In a scare, those customers may withdraw quickly, forcing the bank to find costlier funding.
- Sensitivity to interest rate changes. Net interest income was $2.55 billion of $2.93 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue. Rate changes, including Federal Reserve moves, can squeeze the gap between what loans earn and what deposits cost.

Single stocks carry more risk than diversified funds, which spread money across many companies.
Questions investors ask
How does East West Bancorp make money?
Mostly by lending. East West Bank earns more interest on its loans than it pays on deposits. That gap, called net interest income, was $2.55 billion of its $2.93 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025. The remaining $379 million came from noninterest income such as foreign exchange, treasury management and wealth management services. Its lending ranges from commercial real estate and construction to trade finance for companies doing business between the US and Asia. Net income was $1.33 billion.
Does East West Bancorp raise its dividend every year?
It has raised its regular dividend in each of the last 8 years. Dividends per share rose from $1.10 in fiscal 2020 to $2.40 in fiscal 2025, growth of about 16.9% a year. The fiscal 2025 dividend took 25.2% of earnings, leaving most profit in the business. The yield was 2.29% as of October 28, 2026. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
Does East West Bank operate in China?
Yes. Through its subsidiary East West Bank (China) Limited, it holds a Chinese commercial banking license that lets it run branches, make loans and take deposits there. The company says this is unique among US-based regional banks. It also has branches in Hong Kong and representative offices in China and Singapore, with about 300 employees across China, Hong Kong and Singapore as of December 31, 2025. That reach brings risks, including tariffs, trade disputes, foreign regulation and currency swings.
How has East West Bancorp stock performed over the long term?
It has risen substantially over the past decade, with deep drops along the way. As of October 28, 2026, the stock's price return was 15.4% a year over 10 years, or 317% in total. It was 13.3% a year over 5 years, 39.3% a year over 3 years and 33.6% over 1 year. But the shares fell 91% in the 2008 financial crisis and 33% in 2022, a reminder that bank stocks can swing sharply.
Are East West Bancorp insiders buying or selling the stock?
Selling, in the filings reviewed. Between October 29, 2025 and October 29, 2026, they showed 11 insider sales worth about $12.1 million and no purchases. The largest were May 2026 sales by Dominic Ng, chairman and CEO since 1992, worth about $3.7 million and $3.5 million. Vice Chairman Douglas Krause and Chief Risk Officer Irene Oh also sold. None of these sales used prearranged trading plans. Insiders sell for many reasons, such as taxes or diversification, so sales alone say little about the outlook.
