It has about 14,000 customers and sales in roughly 95 countries. The company was founded in 1978 and was called Brooks Automation until December 2021. Back then it made automation equipment for chip makers. It sold its last semiconductor business in February 2022 for $2.9 billion and has worked only in life sciences since. What could go wrong
- Lost or damaged samples could be costly. Customers rely on Azenta to keep critical biological samples frozen, some at -80°C or in liquid nitrogen. Power outages, natural disasters or equipment failures could damage them, bringing liability claims and reputational harm.
- Transformation plan may not deliver savings. Azenta has been cutting costs and simplifying its portfolio through a transformation program. If savings fall short, results could suffer. On October 7, 2026, it disclosed restructuring costs and an asset write-down.
- Gene synthesis faces misuse and ethics rules. Third parties could misuse Azenta's synthetic genes, creating regulatory risk. Ethical limits or tighter rules on genetic engineering could shrink demand for gene synthesis, part of Multiomics (45.3% of fiscal 2025 revenue).
- China exposure and trade tensions. China supplied 9.8% of fiscal 2025 revenue. US-China friction, tariffs, export controls or sanctions could raise costs, disrupt supply chains or make Azenta's offerings less competitive.
- Research funding and lab budgets drive demand. Cuts in government research funding, higher interest rates or a weak economy can shrink spending by biotech firms and universities. Customers generally make no long-term purchase commitments and can stop buying anytime.
- A highly volatile share price. The shares fell as much as 76.3% from a peak during the three years to October 28, 2026. Results can swing with customer demand, product mix and competition, moving the price sharply.

For income and retirement investors
Azenta pays no dividend: the yield was 0% as of October 28, 2026. It paid $0.40 a share in fiscal 2020 and 2021, while still named Brooks Automation, then $0.10 in fiscal 2022, and nothing since. It had a fiscal 2025 net loss of $55.8 million, so there were no earnings to pay out. Cash went to buybacks (the company repurchasing its own shares) instead: about $1.5 billion in fiscal 2023 and 2024, and none in fiscal 2025. Shares outstanding fell 41% between November 2021 and August 2026.
For an income investor, any return has to come from the share price, and raising cash means selling shares. In the 2022 bear market the stock fell 62.8% from January 3 to October 11, 2022. It had not regained that peak as of October 28, 2026. The price history used here does not reach back to the 2008 or 2020 crashes. A single stock carries more risk than a diversified fund.
