The business in plain English
Avient makes specialty plastic materials, colorants and additives. It does not produce basic plastic resins. Instead, it purchases resins, pigments and additives from large chemical companies. It then formulates them into materials engineered for a specific job and supplies them to the companies that design, mold and assemble plastic products. It profits from the gap between its raw-material costs and what customers pay for that expertise. Gross margin (sales minus the cost of making the products, as a share of sales) was 31.2% in fiscal 2025.
Fiscal 2025 sales were $3.26 billion, split between two segments: Color, Additives and Inks (about 62%) and Specialty Engineered Materials (about 38%). By region, the United States and Canada made up about 40% of sales, Europe, the Middle East and Africa 36%, Asia 18% and Latin America 6%.
Products range from liquid and silicone colorants and packaging additives that cut weight or aid recycling to flame-resistant wire and cable compounds, plastics for medical tubing, and fiber for body armor and helmets. Avient reaches customers through its own sales staff, distributors and commissioned agents. No customer exceeded 3% of 2025 revenue. Formerly PolyOne, the company is based in Avon Lake, Ohio. Its annual report for 2025 listed 98 manufacturing sites and about 9,000 employees.

What could go wrong
- Raw material and energy costs can swing. Avient purchases plastic resins, titanium dioxide, pigments and ethylene from chemical makers. If those inputs, or electricity, fuel and shipping, become costlier or scarce, profits can swing, especially when costs can't be passed on.
- Tariffs and trade disputes. About 61% of 2025 sales were outside the US, and Avient does business in Canada, Mexico, China and the European Union. New tariffs, retaliation or export rules could raise costs and weaken demand.
- Demand rises and falls with the economy. Economic slowdowns, inflation or weakness in end markets such as packaging, consumer goods and transportation can cut orders. Demand is usually slower in the third and fourth quarters, and defense orders arrive unevenly.
- Debt and lender rules limit flexibility. Debt was about $1.88 billion against $426 million of cash and investments as of June 30, 2026. Loan terms (covenants) limit some actions and require financial tests. Failing them could be costly.
- Chemical plant hazards and environmental rules. Avient's 98 manufacturing sites formulate materials and store and transport raw materials, products and waste, which carries accident risks. Environmental, health and safety laws affect operations and can add costs.
- Currency swings can shrink reported results. Most sales are outside the US, with about 36% from Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 18% from Asia in 2025. A stronger dollar makes that foreign revenue worth fewer dollars.

For income and retirement investors
Avient has raised its regular dividend for at least nine straight years through fiscal 2025, and the streak may be longer. Dividends per share rose from $0.82 in fiscal 2020 to $1.085 in fiscal 2025, about 5.8% a year. The yield was 2.65% as of October 28, 2026. In fiscal 2025, dividends were about 121% of earnings, meaning the company paid out more than it earned. They were about 51% of free cash flow (cash left after running and investing in the business). Buybacks were small: $40.6 million over fiscal 2021–2025, versus $447.5 million in dividends.
The stock has fallen hard in downturns. It dropped about 84% in the 2008 financial crisis and 67% in the 2020 COVID crash, recovering about 10 and 7 months after each bottom. It fell about 47% in the 2022 bear market and had not regained its January 2022 high as of October 28, 2026. Single stocks carry more risk than diversified funds.
Questions investors ask
How does Avient make money?
Avient makes money by turning basic plastics into specialty materials. It purchases resins, pigments and additives from large chemical producers and formulates them into colorants, additives, specialty engineered materials, composites and performance fibers. It supplies these to manufacturers in packaging, consumer goods, healthcare, defense, transportation and other markets. Sales were $3.26 billion in fiscal 2025. Color, Additives and Inks made up about 62% of segment sales and Specialty Engineered Materials about 38%. No customer accounted for more than 3% of 2025 revenue.
Does Avient raise its dividend every year?
Yes, through fiscal 2025. Avient has raised its regular dividend at least nine years in a row, and the streak may be longer. Dividends per share rose from $0.82 in fiscal 2020 to $1.085 in fiscal 2025, about 5.8% a year. The dividend yield was 2.65% as of October 28, 2026. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
Does Avient earn enough to cover its dividend?
Partly. In fiscal 2025, dividends of $1.085 per share were more than earnings of $0.89 per share, a payout of about 121% of earnings. Cash flow covered the dividend more comfortably. Dividends paid of $98.8 million used about 51% of the $195 million in free cash flow (cash left after running and investing in the business). Net income fell about 52% from fiscal 2024. It then rose 23% from a year earlier in the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
Was Avient formerly PolyOne?
Yes. Avient was formed as PolyOne Corporation on August 31, 2000, by combining The Geon Company and M.A. Hanna Company. A series of acquisitions and divestitures reshaped it into a specialty materials maker, and it changed its name to Avient Corporation effective June 30, 2020. Its ticker changed from POL to AVNT at the start of trading on July 13, 2020. It is based in Avon Lake, Ohio, and trades on the New York Stock Exchange.
How much debt does Avient have?
Avient had about $1.88 billion of total debt as of June 30, 2026, against $426 million of cash and investments. That left net debt (debt minus cash) of about $1.45 billion. Its annual report says its loan agreements contain covenants (lender rules) that limit some actions and can require it to pass financial tests. These include a revolving credit facility (a reusable credit line) and a term loan. Servicing the debt takes cash, which matters most when sales slow.
