How it works

BUYO aims to track the Man Buyout Beta Index, before fees. The index starts with the 3,000 largest US public companies and drops the biggest 500, leaving small- and mid-sized firms. It then picks those resembling buyout targets (a buyout fund acquires control of companies to try to raise their value), screening on industry, valuation, profitability, debt capacity, cash management, growth potential, supply chains and competition. It relies on models from Numeric and steers its industry mix toward that of US private equity buyouts.

The index weights stocks by market value, caps any one at 5%, and is rebalanced and reconstituted (members added or dropped) monthly. Portfolio turnover, a measure of trading, was 76%. As of March 31, 2026, the index included 289 stocks, with Industrials (22.4%), Information Technology (20.9%) and Consumer Discretionary (13.1%) the largest sectors. As of June 30, 2026, the fund's top 10 holdings, led by Onto Innovation, DigitalOcean and MKS, made up 14.2% of assets.

The fund does not own private equity funds or private companies. It expects to hold every index stock, though up to 20% may go into derivatives, other ETFs, cash or other stocks. It is non-diversified, so it can hold bigger stakes in fewer companies. The index provider is affiliated with the adviser, Krane Funds Advisors, a potential conflict of interest.

What it really costs

  • BUYO charges 0.89% a year, versus an average of 0.15% for the similar funds below (8th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.88% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $91 in the first year and $1,096 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

With a 0.89% fee, about two years of history and a 28% peak-to-trough drop, this screened small- and mid-cap stock fund works more as an add-on than a foundation.

BUYO could add a tilt toward small and mid-sized US companies that resemble private equity buyout targets. It launched in October 2024, so it has no record through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Its deepest drop was 28%, from November 25, 2024 to April 8, 2025; it regained its prior peak on November 12, 2025, about seven months after the low. Anyone withdrawing near that low would have locked in losses. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 10.81%, trailing the Russell 3000 Index's 17.15%.

It offers almost no income: the trailing 12-month yield was 0.01% as of October 27, 2026, paid annually. Costs are high: 0.89% a year against a 0.15% average for similar funds, or $1,096 over 10 years on $10,000 in the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a stand-in for private equity buyout returns built from listed US small- and mid-cap stocks that trade daily like any ETF.
  • Growth-focused holders who don't need income; the trailing 12-month yield was 0.01% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year.
  • Those able to keep it a small slice and sit through drops like its 28% fall from November 2024 to April 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.89% expense ratio tops all seven similar funds compared, which average 0.15%; Schwab US Mid-Cap ETF (SCHM) charges 0.04%.
  • Investors seeking actual private equity holdings: BUYO owns listed stocks, not buyout funds or private companies, so it is only a stand-in.
  • Those wanting a long record or a large fund: BUYO dates from October 2024 and had $16.9 million in assets as of June 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Does BUYO actually own private equity?

No. BUYO holds publicly traded US stocks, not private equity funds or private companies, and it does not try to take control of any business. It tracks the Man Buyout Beta Index, which screens small- and mid-sized US companies for traits buyout funds look for, such as valuation, profitability, debt capacity and growth potential. The goal is a stand-in for buyout performance and risk, so its results can differ from what private equity funds themselves earn.

What is BUYO's expense ratio?

BUYO's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.89%, per its prospectus filed July 29, 2026; nearly all of it is a 0.88% management fee. That is higher than all seven similar funds matched by holdings overlap, which average 0.15%. In the SEC's standard example, with $10,000 invested, a 5% yearly return and shares cashed out at the end, costs total about $91 after one year, $493 after five years and $1,096 after 10 years.

BUYO vs FSMD: what's the difference?

The biggest differences are cost and size. FSMD (Fidelity Small-Mid Multifactor ETF) charges 0.16% a year versus BUYO's 0.89%, and had about $2.5 billion in net assets as of July 31, 2026, against BUYO's $16.9 million as of June 30, 2026. FSMD is BUYO's closest match by holdings, though only about 24% overlap, and the approaches differ: a buyout-style screen versus a multifactor one. Based on price, BUYO returned 21.2% over the year to October 27, 2026, versus 15.5% for FSMD; one year is a short window.

Does BUYO pay dividends?

Barely. BUYO pays out once a year, and its trailing 12-month yield was 0.01% as of October 27, 2026, about $0.003 per share. The index picks companies for buyout-style traits such as valuation, profitability and growth potential, not for dividends. Anyone relying on portfolio income would get almost nothing here and would need to cash out shares or draw on other holdings to cover spending.

How has BUYO performed since it launched?

It has gained but trailed the broad market in its first full year. Per its prospectus, BUYO returned 10.81% in 2025, behind the Man Buyout Beta Index's 11.9% and the Russell 3000 Index's 17.15%. From its October 2024 launch through December 31, 2025, it averaged 9.04% a year. Price-based figures show a 21.2% gain in the year to October 27, 2026. Along the way it fell 28% between November 2024 and April 2025 before recovering by November 2025.
