The business in plain English
Assurant sells protection plans and specialty insurance, mostly through other companies rather than directly to the public. It works with mobile carriers, phone makers, cable companies, retailers, banks, car dealers and mortgage lenders. Their customers buy Assurant's coverage when they get a phone, an appliance, a car or a home loan. Assurant earns premiums and fees on these plans. It also earns money from related services such as repairing, replacing and recycling devices.
Global Lifestyle is the larger of its two segments, with 77.6% of revenue for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025. It sells extended service contracts for phones, electronics and appliances. These pay for repair or replacement after the manufacturer's warranty ends. The segment also sells vehicle protection and coverage for commercial equipment. Within its Connected Living business, mobile device solutions made up 53% of revenue. Contracts for electronics and appliances made up 34.4%, and financial services and other insurance made up 12.6%.
Global Housing brought in 22.7% of revenue. It sells lender-placed homeowners insurance. A mortgage lender buys this coverage when a borrower's own policy lapses, and the borrower pays for it. The segment also sells flood, manufactured housing, condo, homeowners and renters insurance. That ties its results to storms and other disasters. By region, 82.3% of revenue came from the United States and 17.7% from other countries.

What could go wrong
- Losing or renegotiating major client contracts. Assurant sells mostly through partners such as mobile carriers, retailers, car dealers and mortgage lenders. If a big partner leaves, renews on worse terms or runs into its own trouble, revenue and profits could fall.
- Swings in mobile device values and supply. Mobile was 53.0% of Connected Living's premiums, fees and other income in fiscal 2025. Falling values or tight supply of mobile devices could hurt this business, which also has its own regulatory compliance risks.
- Catastrophes and climate change hit home insurance. Global Housing insures homes, including against floods. Disaster losses, which the company links partly to climate change, plus repair costs pushed up by inflation, could sharply raise claims and cut profits.
- Claims could outrun reserves and pricing. Assurant sets aside reserves, which is money held for claims not yet paid, and prices policies using models. If claims or costs run higher than expected, it may have to add reserves, lowering earnings and capital.
- Regulators could cut rates or tighten rules. Insurance is heavily regulated, and Assurant lists cuts to the premium rates it charges as a specific risk. Lower approved rates, new rules or alleged violations could shrink profits, limit growth or harm its reputation.
- Dividends depend on cash from subsidiaries. Assurant is a parent company that relies on cash from its insurance subsidiaries, and regulators can limit those payments. If they shrink, it could struggle to meet its debts and pay future shareholder dividends.

For income and retirement investors
Assurant's dividend per share went up every year from fiscal 2016 to fiscal 2025, at least nine increases in a row. It rose from $2.55 in fiscal 2020 to $3.28 in fiscal 2025, about 5.2% a year. The fiscal 2025 dividend used 19.3% of earnings and 10.5% of free cash flow (cash left after running and reinvesting in the business), which leaves a wide cushion. The yield was a modest 1.35% as of October 28, 2026. Buybacks return more cash than dividends. Assurant spent $2.22 billion buying back its own shares from fiscal 2021 to 2025, compared with $784.4 million in dividends, and its share count fell 13.4% between October 2021 and July 2026.
Downturns have hit the stock hard. It fell 81.6% in 2008 and did not regain its high until November 2013. It dropped 42.9% in the 2020 COVID crash and recovered by January 2021. It fell 24.2% in the 2022 bear market and recovered by March 2024. A single stock carries more risk than a diversified fund.
Questions investors ask
How does Assurant make money?
Assurant makes money by selling protection plans and specialty insurance through partner companies, such as mobile carriers, retailers, car dealers and mortgage lenders, which offer the coverage to their customers. It collects premiums and fees. In fiscal 2025, revenue was $12.81 billion and net income was $872.7 million. Global Lifestyle, which covers phones, electronics, appliances and vehicles, brought in about 77.6% of revenue. Global Housing, which includes lender-placed home insurance, brought in about 22.7%.
Does Assurant raise its dividend every year?
Yes, so far. Assurant's dividend per share went up every year from fiscal 2016 to fiscal 2025, at least nine increases in a row, and the true streak may be longer. It rose from $2.55 in fiscal 2020 to $3.28 in fiscal 2025, about 5.2% a year. The fiscal 2025 dividend used only 19.3% of earnings. Still, the yield was a modest 1.35% as of October 28, 2026, and future increases are not guaranteed.
What does Assurant's Global Housing segment do?
Global Housing sells home and renters insurance. Its lender-placed coverage protects a home when the borrower's own policy lapses. The mortgage lender arranges it, and the borrower usually pays. The segment also offers flood, manufactured housing, condominium and standard homeowners policies. It brought in about 22.7% of fiscal 2025 revenue. Assurant said lender-placed policies grew in 2025 as the regular homeowners market hardened, meaning coverage became more expensive and harder to find.
How has Assurant stock performed over the long term?
It has done well over long periods, with deep drops along the way. As of October 28, 2026, its price-based return was 39.3% over one year, about 13.7% a year over five years and about 15.8% a year over ten years. The stock also fell 54.4% in calendar 2008 and 18.4% in 2022. Its worst decline in about 21 years of price history was 81.6%. Past returns do not predict future results.
What is Assurant's P/E ratio?
About 16.8 as of October 28, 2026, based on fiscal 2025 diluted earnings of $16.93 per share. Its market value was about $14.06 billion. The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio shows how many dollars investors pay for each dollar of yearly profit. Insurance earnings can swing with disaster losses, so one year's P/E can mislead. Diluted earnings per share ranged from $5.05 to $22.66 between fiscal 2020 and fiscal 2025.
