How it works
WDNA is an index fund that aims to match the WisdomTree BioRevolution Index, before fees. WisdomTree designs the index and owns the fund's adviser. To qualify, a company must earn at least 50% of its revenue from what WisdomTree calls "BioRevolution Activities": genetic medicine, gene-based consumer products, farming and food production, bio-engineered manufacturing materials and DNA data storage. It also needs a market value of at least $300 million and typical daily trading of at least $1 million in each of the prior three months.
The index is "modified equal weighted": it spreads money roughly evenly instead of by company size, and refreshes its member list and resets weights twice a year. Between resets, weights drift with prices. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 80 stocks; the top 10 made up 30.65% of assets, led by Twist Bioscience (5.9%), Moderna (4.1%) and Eli Lilly (4.1%).
The fund uses "representative sampling," so it may hold only a sample of index stocks that behaves like the whole, but normally keeps at least 80% of net assets in index stocks or close equivalents. Mirroring the index, it had more than 25% of assets in the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and life sciences industry group as of September 30, 2026. It held no derivatives as of June 30, 2026.
What it really costs
- WDNA charges 0.45% a year, versus an average of 0.4% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $46 in the first year and $567 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WDNA | $46 | $144 | $252 | $567 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow, equal-weighted biotech theme fund that fell 58.8% from its 2021 peak, so it fits at most as a small slice beside broader holdings.
WDNA could add a concentrated genetics and biotech bet, with big swings. It launched in June 2021, after the 2008 and 2020 crashes. In the 2022 bear market it fell 32.7% between January 3 and June 16, 2022, and took about 50 months, until August 19, 2026, to recover. Its worst calendar year was 2022, down 26.07%. Its deepest drop, 58.8% from September 2021 to April 2025, had not been fully recovered as of October 27, 2026. Cashing out during such stretches would have locked in steep losses.
It charges 0.45% a year, or $46 on $10,000 in the first year under the SEC's standard example. It pays once a year. The trailing 12-month yield was 3.21% as of October 27, 2026, though a single annual payment can vary widely. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors seeking a small satellite stake in genetics and biotechnology, spread across about 80 roughly equal-weighted stocks such as Twist Bioscience, Moderna and Eli Lilly.
- Patient holders who can sit through drops like its 58.8% fall from September 2021 to April 2025 without needing the money.
- Investors comparing genetics-themed funds on cost: WDNA's 0.45% fee is below GNOM and HELX (0.50% each) and ARKG (0.75%).
Look elsewhere if
- Retirees needing steady income or near-term cash: it pays once a year and took about 50 months to recover from its 2022 drop.
- Investors wary of tiny funds: WDNA held about $2.7 million as of June 30, 2026, versus $10.7 billion for SPDR S&P Biotech ETF.
- Cost-focused investors: Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) charges 0.09% for broad health care, and IBBQ charges 0.19% for biotech.

Questions investors ask
What stocks does WDNA hold?
WDNA held 80 stocks as of June 30, 2026, chosen under the WisdomTree BioRevolution Index's genetics and biotechnology rules. The largest were Twist Bioscience (5.9%), Moderna (4.1%), Eli Lilly (4.1%), Johnson & Johnson (3.0%) and United Therapeutics (2.4%). The top 10 made up about 31% of assets. US companies were 79% of the fund, followed by Switzerland (4.6%) and Germany (3.1%). The index rules also cover companies in farming, food and bio-based manufacturing.
What is WDNA's expense ratio?
WDNA's expense ratio is 0.45% a year, according to its prospectus filed October 28, 2026. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested, a 5% yearly return and shares cashed in at the end of each period. On that basis, total costs come to about $46 after one year, $144 after three, $252 after five and $567 after ten. That matches the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB). It is slightly above the 0.40% average of similar funds and well above the Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) at 0.09%.
WDNA vs GNOM: what's the difference?
The main differences are cost, size and returns. WDNA charges 0.45% a year, versus 0.50% for the Global X Genomics & Biotechnology ETF (GNOM), and about 35% of their holdings overlap. GNOM is far larger, with about $91.9 million in assets as of August 31, 2026. WDNA had about $2.7 million as of June 30, 2026. Through October 27, 2026, GNOM returned 56.6% over one year and 25.8% a year over three years. WDNA returned 44.5% and 23.9%.
How has WDNA performed since it launched?
WDNA lost money on average from its June 2021 launch through December 31, 2025, and it trailed both comparison indexes in its prospectus. Its official average annual return over that period was a loss of 6.92%. The S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index lost 0.65% a year, and the S&P 500 Health Care Index gained 7.33% a year. WDNA lost 26.07% in 2022, 2.27% in 2023 and 14.15% in 2024. It then gained 22.94% in 2025 and, based on market price, a further 42% year to date through October 27, 2026.
Does WDNA pay dividends?
Yes, WDNA makes one distribution a year. Its payouts over the 12 months to October 27, 2026 totaled $0.77 a share, a trailing yield of 3.21%. Because it pays only once a year, a single payment sets that figure, and the amount can change a lot from one year to the next. Retirees who want monthly or quarterly income may find the schedule less convenient than funds that pay more often.
