How it works

TMFG does not track an index. Its adviser, Motley Fool Asset Management, picks stocks using a "quality growth" style, meaning it looks for strong businesses that can keep growing and that trade at sensible prices. It judges each company on four things: management, culture and incentives; the economics of the business; competitive advantage; and trajectory, which means what the company might look like in ten or more years. It favors strong market positions, manageable debt and steady free cash flow.

The rules are set in the prospectus. The fund must hold stocks from at least three countries and keep at least 40% of its assets outside the US, or 30% if conditions are poor. It holds 30 to 50 positions, and its 10 largest may not exceed 60% of assets. It won't put more than 5% into one company at the time of purchase, but a winner can grow past 5% and stay. To own foreign stocks it may use depositary receipts, which are certificates that trade in place of a foreign company's shares. There is no fixed rebalancing schedule. The adviser reviews allocations regularly, stays fully invested and trades little: turnover was 15%.

As of August 31, 2026, the top 10 holdings made up 46.3% of assets. Alphabet (7.2%), Amazon (6.5%) and Philippine port operator International Container Terminal Services (6.5%) were each above 5%. US stocks made up 53.9% of assets, and cash made up 9.6%.

What it really costs

  • TMFG charges 0.85% a year, versus an average of 0.56% for the similar funds below (6th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $87 in the first year and $1,049 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, actively managed stock fund with a high fee, so it is better suited to a smaller slice of a portfolio than to the core.

TMFG can add foreign and smaller companies that a US index fund leaves out, but its record is short and bumpy. The ETF's price history doesn't go back to the 2008 crisis or the 2020 COVID crash. In the 2022 bear market it fell 31.2%. Its deepest drop was 33.7%, from December 30, 2021, to October 14, 2022, and it took about 17 months to recover, on March 21, 2024. Its worst calendar year was 2022, when it lost 28.2%. Anyone who had to sell shares during that stretch would have locked in big losses. Income is small: the yield was 0.26% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% yearly return), costs add up to $1,049 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a hand-picked mix of about 40 global stocks, at least 40% outside the US, including names like ICTSI, TSMC and Nintendo.
  • Long-term holders willing to pay 0.85% for active stock picking with little trading, at 15% portfolio turnover per the prospectus.
  • People with other sources of cash who could sit through a drop like the 33.7% fall in 2021–2022 without selling.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: TMFG's 0.85% expense ratio ranks 6th of 7 among similar funds, which average 0.56%.
  • Retirees who need regular income: the yield was 0.26% as of October 27, 2026, and the fund pays only once a year.
  • Investors who want index-like results: the fund trailed the FTSE Global All Cap Net Tax Index over one and five years through December 31, 2024.

Questions investors ask

Is TMFG good for retirement?

It can play a supporting role, but it isn't built for income or stability. It yielded 0.26% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year, and it fell 33.7% from late 2021 to October 2022, then took about 17 months to recover. Its 0.85% expense ratio is above the 0.56% average for similar funds. It may suit retirement savers who want a smaller slice of global growth stocks alongside broader holdings.

What stocks are in TMFG?

As of August 31, 2026, TMFG held 41 stocks. The largest were Alphabet (7.2%), Amazon (6.5%), International Container Terminal Services (6.5%), Mastercard (4.4%), TSMC (4.3%), Nintendo (3.7%), Waste Connections (3.7%), StoneX (3.6%), Costco (3.4%) and Equinix (3.2%). Together the top 10 made up 46.3% of assets. US stocks were 53.9%, followed by the UK, the Philippines, Canada, Taiwan and Japan. Cash was 9.6%.

Does TMFG pay a dividend?

Yes, but it's small and paid once a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, TMFG paid about $0.08 per share, a yield of 0.26%. That's expected: the fund's goal is long-term capital growth, not income, and it favors growing companies that often reinvest their profits instead of paying large dividends. Investors who need steady cash from a fund would get little of it here.

How has TMFG performed?

Results have been mixed. Through December 31, 2024, the prospectus shows average yearly returns of 15.57% over one year and 9.28% over five years. The FTSE Global All Cap Net Tax Index returned 16.61% and 10.02%. As of October 27, 2026, the price return was 0.4% over one year and 14.3% a year over three years. By calendar year, it lost 28.2% in 2022, then gained 28.3% in 2023, 15.5% in 2024 and 6.7% in 2025.

What's the difference between TMFG and LRGG?

LRGG, the Macquarie Focused Large Growth ETF, is the closest fund by holdings, but the two share only about 24% of their holdings. LRGG costs much less: a 0.44% expense ratio against TMFG's 0.85%. As of October 27, 2026, LRGG returned 1.3% over one year and TMFG returned 0.4%. TMFG must keep at least 40% of its assets outside the US and also holds smaller companies, so the two funds are worth comparing side by side.
