The short version

JPMorgan Active Developing Markets Equity ETF (JADE) is an actively managed fund. Its managers pick stocks in emerging markets (developing economies) such as Taiwan, South Korea and China, for investors who want research-driven choices instead of an index. That approach costs 0.65% a year, well above the 0.06% average of six similar funds. The fund is also the smallest of the group, with $30.5 million in assets as of July 31, 2026.

What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jul 31, 2026, investors added a net $0.00 (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +7.10%, +1.05%, -4.27%.

How it works

JADE does not track an index. JPMorgan's managers keep at least 80% of assets in stocks and similar instruments tied to emerging markets. That means most countries outside the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Israel, the U.K., Hong Kong and most of Western Europe. A company qualifies if it is based or mainly traded there, or earns at least 50% of its revenue or profits there.

Stock picking comes first and country weights second (bottom-up selection). Local analysts rank companies on expected medium-term returns and longer-term business quality. Portfolio managers choose from those rankings, mixing growth companies that compound earnings with cheaper, dividend-paying value stocks. ESG (environmental, social and governance) factors are weighed but don't automatically exclude a stock. Turnover, the share of the portfolio replaced in a year, was 30%.

JADE may use depositary receipts (certificates representing foreign shares), participation notes, futures and currency forwards that can hedge some foreign currency back to the dollar. It held no derivatives as of July 31, 2026. Some Chinese holdings rely on variable interest entity (VIE) structures: contracts that stand in for direct ownership but aren't formally recognized under Chinese law. JADE generally settles share creations and redemptions in cash rather than by swapping stocks, so it may have to realize taxable gains that many ETFs avoid.

What it really costs

  • JADE charges 0.65% a year, versus an average of 0.06% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $66 in the first year and $810 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

Its active stock picking, 0.65% fee, short history since May 2024 and heavy weighting in Taiwan and South Korea make it a better fit for a modest add-on than for a portfolio's core.

JADE could add developing-market companies that U.S.-focused portfolios often lack, led by Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics. It launched May 16, 2024, so it missed the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash and the 2022 bear market. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 38.19%. Its deepest drop was 16.7%, from October 7, 2024, to April 8, 2025, and it regained that peak by May 12, 2025. A harsher slump could cut deeper and last longer. That is a risk for anyone who may need to cash out shares in a bad year.

JADE pays income once a year, with a trailing 12-month yield of 1.96% as of October 27, 2026. Costs are high: the SEC's standard example, assuming 5% annual returns, puts expenses on $10,000 at $810 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want JPMorgan's research-driven stock picks in emerging markets, led by Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics, rather than an index fund.
  • Long-term holders adding a small emerging-markets slice to a U.S.-heavy portfolio who can accept volatility of 24.5% in the year to October 27, 2026.
  • People comfortable with heavy exposure to Taiwan (22.3%) and South Korea (18.0%) as of July 31, 2026, including chip companies SK hynix and MediaTek.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: JADE's 0.65% expense ratio compares with 0.09% for IEMG and 0.07% for VWO, two large emerging-markets index funds.
  • Retirees wanting regular income: JADE pays once a year, and its trailing 12-month yield was 1.96% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Anyone wanting a long track record or a big fund: JADE launched May 16, 2024, and held $30.5 million as of July 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is JADE good for retirement?

JADE may suit a small slice of a retirement portfolio rather than its core. It is an actively managed emerging-markets fund with a 0.65% expense ratio and volatility of 24.5% over the year to October 27, 2026. It launched May 16, 2024, gained 38.19% in 2025, and has not been through a deep bear market. It pays income only once a year, so it is not built for steady withdrawals.

What's the difference between JADE and IEMG?

The biggest differences are management style and cost. iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG), the closest match by holdings, tracks an MSCI emerging-markets index for 0.09% a year. JADE's managers pick stocks for 0.65%. IEMG is far larger, with $160.9 billion in assets as of August 31, 2026, versus JADE's $30.5 million as of July 31, 2026. JADE returned 18.5% over the year to October 27, 2026, versus 11.3% for IEMG through October 30, 2026, but that edge may not last.

Does JADE pay dividends?

Yes, JADE pays a dividend once a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.44 per share, a trailing yield of 1.96%. The amount can vary because it depends on dividends from holdings such as Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics and Tencent, and on exchange rates. Income isn't the fund's goal. Its stated objective is long-term capital appreciation (growth in share price), so retirees who want regular payments may find monthly or quarterly payers easier to plan around.

What are JADE's top holdings?

As of July 31, 2026, JADE's largest holding was Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing at 12.5% of assets. Next came Samsung Electronics (7.7%), Tencent (3.8%) and SK hynix (3.8%). The top 10 made up 36.1% of the fund, which had 132 holdings. By country, Taiwan led with 22.3%, then South Korea (18.0%), China (12.9%), the Cayman Islands (10.0%), Brazil (7.4%) and India (7.1%). Tencent and NetEase are among the holdings registered in the Cayman Islands.

What is JADE's expense ratio?

JADE's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.65%, all of it management fee, according to the prospectus filed February 25, 2026. That is the highest of the seven funds in our comparison; the six similar funds average 0.06%. The higher fee pays for JPMorgan's active research and stock picking. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested and a 5% annual return. On that basis, costs would total $66 after one year, $362 after five years and $810 after 10 years.
