How it works
IBHI tracks the Bloomberg 2029 Term High Yield and Income Index. The index holds U.S. dollar, taxable, fixed-rate corporate bonds scheduled to mature between January 1 and December 15, 2029. Most are high-yield, or "junk," bonds. These are rated below investment grade, which means a greater risk that the company misses a payment. Bloomberg uses the middle rating from Moody's, S&P and Fitch. Each bond needs at least $250 million outstanding. Bonds priced below $60 (bond prices are quoted per $100 of face value) are dropped. Bonds are weighted by market value, and any one issuer is typically capped at 3%. The index updates monthly until June 30, 2029. It held about 429 bonds as of October 31, 2025.
The fund changes as 2029 gets closer. In the final 1.5 years, BBB-rated bonds replace junk bonds that are repaid early or drop out of the index. BBB is the lowest tier of investment grade. In the last six months, the index holds repaid principal as cash instead of reinvesting it. As a result, the fund's yield may drift toward money market rates. The fund plans to close on or about December 15, 2029, and pay out its remaining assets. It does not promise any set amount back.
What it really costs
- IBHI charges 0.35% a year, versus an average of 0.5% for the similar funds below (3rd of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $36 in the first year and $— over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBHI | $36 | $113 | $— | $— |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
The fund pays monthly income from higher-yielding corporate bonds and has a set end date, so it is built for income rather than long-term growth.
IBHI could add monthly income with a known end date. Its trailing 12-month yield was 6.76% as of October 27, 2026. Its 0.35% expense ratio is below the 0.50% average of similar funds. Because it holds junk bonds, its price can fall when the economy weakens and default risk rises. The fund launched in March 2022, so it has no record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes. It fell 13.6% from March 29 to September 30, 2022. It then took 14 months to recover, reaching its old high by December 1, 2023. That would have been a hard stretch for anyone selling shares to cover spending. Each full calendar year since has been positive, and 2025 was the weakest at 7.93%. Income may fade toward money market rates as the fund nears its 2029 close. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income seekers who want monthly payouts from junk bonds and accept default risk. The trailing yield was 6.76% as of October 27, 2026.
- People with a cash need around late 2029, since the fund plans to close and pay out its assets around December 15, 2029.
- Bond-ladder builders who want hundreds of issuers instead of single bonds. The top 10 holdings made up 12.08% of the fund as of July 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors who need a guaranteed amount back. The fund promises no set payout at maturity, and junk-bond issuers can default.
- Cost-focused investors: HYLB charges 0.05% against IBHI's 0.35%, though HYLB holds longer bonds (4.6 years on average) and has no end date.
- Anyone uneasy with drops like the 13.6% fall in 2022, or who wants income from this fund to continue past 2029.

Questions investors ask
Does IBHI pay monthly dividends?
Yes. IBHI pays income monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.55 per share, a trailing yield of 6.76%. The payments aren't fixed like a single bond's coupon. They change over time as bonds are repaid, called early or replaced. In the months before the fund closes in 2029, its yield may move toward money market rates. That would likely be below the yields of the bonds it held earlier.
What happens to IBHI when it matures in 2029?
IBHI plans to close on or about December 15, 2029, and pay its remaining net assets to shareholders in cash. It does not promise any set amount back. The final value depends on how its bonds performed and whether any issuers defaulted. In the index's last six months, money from repaid bonds is held as cash that earns no interest. After the payout, shareholders would decide where to put the money next.
What's the difference between IBHI and SHYG?
Both are iShares short-term high-yield bond ETFs, and SHYG is the closest match in the comparison set. The key difference is that SHYG has no end date and keeps replacing its bonds. IBHI closes in 2029. SHYG costs 0.30% against IBHI's 0.35%. SHYG is also much larger, with $7.6 billion in assets against IBHI's $497 million as of July 31, 2026. Through October 27, 2026, IBHI returned 9.5% a year over three years, against 8.0% for SHYG.
Is IBHI a junk bond fund?
Mostly, yes. IBHI holds corporate bonds rated below investment grade, often called junk bonds. In its final 1.5 years, it adds BBB-rated bonds, the lowest tier of investment grade. As of July 31, 2026, its largest holdings included EchoStar at 2.08%, Cloud Software Group, Centene and Venture Global LNG. Any one issuer is typically capped at 3%. The fund fell 13.6% in 2022. It then returned 14.34% in 2023, 8.02% in 2024 and 7.93% in 2025.
How much does IBHI cost per year?
IBHI's expense ratio is 0.35%, according to its prospectus filed February 23, 2026. The SEC's standard example invests $10,000 and assumes a 5% annual return. On that basis, costs would be about $36 after one year and $113 after three years. The average for similar funds is 0.50%, and IBHI ranks 3rd cheapest of 8. HYLB costs less at 0.05%, SHYG charges 0.30% and SJNK charges 0.40%.
