What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Aug 31, 2026, investors added a net $102.2M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +0.17%, -0.17%, +0.97%.

How it works

HYLB follows the Solactive USD High Yield Corporates Total Market Index. Solactive AG builds the index and is independent of DWS. To qualify, a bond must be US dollar-denominated and rated below investment grade, based on a combined rating from Moody's, Fitch and S&P. The issuing company's country of risk must count as a developed market. The issuer needs at least $1 billion of bonds outstanding, and the bond itself at least $400 million. The bond's original maturity can be no more than 15 years, and it must have at least one year left until it matures (20 months for new additions). These rules aim for a more easily traded slice of the junk-bond market. As of October 31, 2025, the index held 1,264 bonds from 549 issuers.

Bonds are weighted by market value, and no single issuer can exceed 3%. The index is rebalanced every month. The fund uses "representative sampling": it holds a selection of the index's bonds that resembles the whole, not every one. Many of its holdings are Rule 144A bonds, which are sold privately to large institutions and can be harder to sell or value.

As of August 31, 2026, the fund had 1,269 holdings, and the top 10 made up just 3.61% of assets. Average time to maturity was 4.6 years and the average coupon was 6.62%. The fund may also lend out up to one-third of its assets.

What it really costs

  • HYLB charges 0.05% a year, versus an average of 0.47% for the similar funds below (1st of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $5 in the first year and $64 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
HYLB$5$16$28$64
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleIncome

HYLB pays monthly from a diversified basket of high-yield corporate bonds and charges very little, but it has fallen sharply in stock-market selloffs.

HYLB may add steady monthly income. Its trailing 12-month yield was 6.7% as of October 27, 2026. It costs 0.05% a year, which works out to $64 over 10 years in the SEC's standard $10,000 example. The trade-off is that junk bonds often fall alongside stocks. The fund launched in December 2016, so it has no record from 2008. In the 2020 COVID crash it dropped 22.9% in about a month and took about 7.6 months to recover. In 2022 it fell 15.3% from its peak and needed about 15 months to get back. That year, down 10.8%, was its worst calendar year. Someone drawing income in a year like that might have to sell shares at low prices. Past results don't predict future results, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Cost-conscious income investors who want broad junk-bond exposure for 0.05% a year, compared with a 0.47% average for similar funds.
  • Retirees who want monthly payouts; the trailing 12-month yield was 6.7% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Investors who want wide diversification: 1,269 holdings, with the top 10 making up only 3.61% of assets as of August 31, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Those who want bonds that hold steady when stocks crash; HYLB fell 22.9% in early 2020.
  • People who may need to sell within a year or two of a downturn; recovering from the 2022 drop took about 15 months.
  • Investors who want investment-grade quality; every bond in its index is rated below investment grade.

Questions investors ask

Does HYLB pay monthly dividends?

Yes. HYLB pays distributions every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $2.37 per share, a trailing yield of 6.7%. The money comes from interest on the high-yield corporate bonds it holds, so payments can rise or fall as bond income, interest rates and the fund's holdings change. Payouts aren't guaranteed, and a bond issuer that defaults stops paying interest.

What's the difference between HYLB and SPHY?

They are very similar. Both are broad, low-cost high-yield corporate bond index funds charging 0.05% a year. SPHY is larger, with about $11.3 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026, compared with $3.56 billion for HYLB as of August 31, 2026. HYLB holds slightly shorter bonds, averaging 4.6 years to maturity against 5.4 years. As of October 27, 2026, their three-year annualized returns were close: 8.7% for HYLB and 8.9% for SPHY.

Is HYLB a junk bond fund?

Yes. HYLB's index includes only US dollar-denominated corporate bonds rated below investment grade, which are commonly called junk bonds. They pay higher interest because the companies are more likely to default. As of August 31, 2026, its largest positions included bonds from 1261229 B.C. Ltd., EchoStar, Quikrete and Cloud Software Group. Each was about 0.5% of assets or less, which spreads out the risk of any single default.

Is HYLB safe for retirement?

No bond fund is risk-free, and HYLB carries more risk than investment-grade bond funds. Its deepest drop was 23%, during the 2020 COVID crash, and it took about 7.6 months to recover. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -10.8%. It offers monthly income at a very low cost, but its price can fall at the same time as stocks. That matters for anyone who may need to sell shares in a downturn.

What is HYLB's average annual return?

According to its prospectus, HYLB returned 7.90% for the year ended December 31, 2024. Its five-year average annual return was 3.38%, and its average since its December 2016 launch was 4.41% a year. Based on share prices as of October 27, 2026, its five-year annualized return was 3.7% and its three-year annualized return was 8.7%. These figures include reinvested income, and they swing with interest rates and credit conditions.
