The short version
The iShares 0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (SHYG) tracks the Markit iBoxx USD Liquid High Yield 0-5 Index. That index holds U.S. dollar “junk” bonds, meaning company debt rated below investment grade, that mature within five years. Because its bonds are short-term, its price reacts less to interest-rate changes, and it pays income monthly, with a 12-month yield of 7.16% as of October 27, 2026. Its 0.30% expense ratio is below the 0.42% average of similar funds.

How it works
SHYG follows the Markit iBoxx USD Liquid High Yield 0-5 Index. The index comes from Markit, which is independent of BlackRock. It holds high yield (“junk”) corporate bonds in U.S. dollars with zero to five years left until they mature. These bonds are generally rated below investment grade. Each bond needs at least $350 million outstanding and must pass Markit's liquidity screens, which include a minimum price. Bonds are weighted by market value, so larger issues count for more, but no issuer can be more than 3% of the index. The index rebalances monthly.
BlackRock does not try to beat the index. It uses “representative sampling.” Instead of buying every bond, it holds a sample picked to match the index's duration (how much prices move when interest rates change), maturity, credit ratings, yield and industry mix. At least 80% of assets must be in bonds from the index. Up to 10% can go to futures, options, swaps or other bonds that help the fund track the index. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 1,160 issues with an average of 3.1 years left to maturity.
The fund may lend out securities worth up to one-third of its assets. It also leans toward an industry when the index does. As of October 31, 2025, consumer goods and services companies made up a significant share.
What it really costs
- SHYG charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.45% for the similar funds below (2nd of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SHYG | $31 | $97 | $169 | $381 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
Its short-term junk bonds paid a trailing yield of 7.16% as of October 27, 2026, distributed monthly, but they carry more credit risk than safer bonds.
SHYG holds short-term junk bonds (corporate debt rated below investment grade), which pay more than safer bonds but can fall sharply in downturns. Launched in 2013, it missed the 2008 crisis. Its deepest drop, 19.3% in the 2020 COVID crash, took 7.9 months to recover. In 2022, its worst calendar year (down 4.94%), it fell as much as 9.2% and took 12.9 months to recover. Selling or drawing income near those lows would have locked in losses.
Its trailing yield, based on the past year's payouts, was 7.16% as of October 27, 2026, paid monthly, though defaults or falling rates could shrink it. Its 0.30% annual fee ($31 in the first year on $10,000, per the SEC's standard example) is below the 0.45% peer average. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income-focused investors who want monthly payouts and accept junk-bond risk: the trailing yield was 7.16% as of October 27, 2026.
- Those wanting spread-out credit risk: 1,160 holdings, top 10 only 4.18% of assets, averaging 3.1 years to maturity as of July 31, 2026.
- Cost-conscious investors: its 0.30% annual fee ranks 2nd lowest of 8 similar funds, below SJNK's 0.40% and HYS's 0.57%.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone needing steady value for near-term spending: it fell 19.3% in the 2020 COVID crash and took 12.9 months to recover after 2022's drop.
- Investors wanting a stock-crash hedge: it holds junk bonds from issuers like EchoStar, DISH DBS and Cloud Software Group, and fell alongside stocks in 2020.
- Those focused on the lowest fee may compare HYLB at 0.05%, though its bonds are longer, averaging 4.6 years to maturity versus SHYG's 3.1.

Questions investors ask
Does SHYG pay monthly dividends?
Yes. SHYG pays distributions monthly. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid $2.96 per share, a trailing yield of 7.16%. The money comes from interest on its bonds, which paid an average coupon (interest rate) of 6.4% as of July 31, 2026. Payments can change from month to month. The prospectus warns that income may fall when rates drop or when bonds that mature or are called are replaced with lower-yielding ones.
What's the difference between SHYG and SJNK?
Both funds hold short-term U.S. high yield corporate bonds with an average maturity of 3.1 years. SHYG tracks a Markit iBoxx index and charges 0.30%. SPDR's SJNK follows a Bloomberg index and charges 0.40%. SHYG is larger, with $7.6 billion as of July 31, 2026, compared with $4.9 billion for SJNK as of June 30, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, SHYG returned 2.4% over one year and 8.0% a year over three years. SJNK returned 1.5% and 7.8%.
Is SHYG good for retirement income?
It can provide monthly income, but it is riskier than its short maturities suggest. The trailing yield was 7.16% as of October 27, 2026. Its bonds are rated below investment grade, so they can lose value in a recession. The fund fell 19.2% in the 2020 COVID crash and took about eight months to recover. It fell 9.2% in 2022 and took about 13 months to recover. Over the 10 years through December 31, 2025, it returned 5.64% a year on average.
What are SHYG's top holdings?
SHYG is widely spread out. As of July 31, 2026, it held 1,160 bond issues, and its 10 largest positions made up only 4.18% of assets. The largest were bonds from Meridian Arc Holdco (0.58%), EchoStar (0.53%) and PR RNO Property Owner 1 (0.46%), plus two Cloud Software Group issues. Other large holdings included DISH DBS, Venture Global LNG, HUB International and TransDigm. About 82% of assets were from U.S. issuers, followed by Canada at 4%.
What is SHYG's expense ratio?
SHYG's expense ratio is 0.30%, according to its prospectus filed February 23, 2026. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested with a 5% annual return), total costs would be about $31 after one year, $97 after three, $169 after five and $381 after ten. That makes it the 2nd-cheapest of 8 similar funds, whose average is 0.42%. Xtrackers' HYLB costs less at 0.05%, but it holds longer bonds.
