The short version
Xtrackers Low Beta High Yield Bond ETF (HYDW) is a DWS index fund that holds US dollar junk bonds, meaning corporate bonds rated below investment grade. Within each sector it picks the bonds with lower yields, because those have tended to swing less than the wider high-yield market. It pays income monthly and yielded 5.6% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026. It costs 0.20% a year, against a 0.50% average for similar funds.

How it works
HYDW tracks the Solactive USD High Yield Corporates Total Market Low Beta Index. Solactive AG builds the index and is independent of DWS. The index starts with US dollar corporate bonds rated below investment grade by Moody's, S&P or Fitch. Each bond needs at least $400 million outstanding and must come from an issuer with at least $1 billion outstanding. Its original maturity can be no longer than 15 years, and it needs at least one year left to run (20 months for new additions).
Next comes the "low beta" screen. Beta measures how much a bond's price moves with the overall market. Within each sector, only bonds that yield less than the sector's median qualify, because lower-yielding bonds tend to move less. The index weights the remaining bonds by market value and caps any one issuer at 3%. It is rebalanced monthly. As of October 31, 2025, it held 578 bonds from 268 issuers. Consumer cyclical and capital goods companies made up a large share.
The fund doesn't buy every bond in the index. It uses representative sampling, which means holding a subset of bonds with similar traits to the whole index. At least 80% of its assets go into index bonds. Many holdings are Rule 144A bonds, which are sold privately to large institutions. The fund may lend out up to one-third of its assets to earn extra income. Its portfolio turnover was 54%.
What it really costs
- HYDW charges 0.2% a year, versus an average of 0.5% for the similar funds below (2nd of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $20 in the first year and $255 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HYDW | $20 | $64 | $113 | $255 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
HYDW pays monthly income from short-dated junk bonds at a lower cost than most similar funds, but it carries real credit risk.
HYDW could add monthly income to a portfolio. It yielded 5.6% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, and charges 0.20% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that comes to about $20 in the first year on a $10,000 investment. The fund launched in 2018, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis. It fell 17.7% in the 2020 COVID crash but recovered in about four months. The 2022 drop took longer to heal: it fell 12.5% and needed about 14.5 months to recover. Its worst calendar year was 2022, with a 7.9% loss. Someone drawing income in a year like that might have to sell shares at low prices, and defaults on junk bonds can reduce payouts. Its official five-year average annual return was 2.96% through December 31, 2024. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income seekers who want monthly payouts from junk bonds and can accept sharp drops, like the 17.7% fall in early 2020.
- Investors who prefer shorter bonds. Average maturity was 3.9 years as of August 31, 2026, which limits how much rate changes move the price.
- Investors who want wide diversification. The fund had 581 holdings as of August 31, 2026, and its top 10 made up only 6.56%.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors. DWS's broader HYLB charges 0.05% versus HYDW's 0.20%, and HYLB earned more over the three years to October 27, 2026.
- Anyone who needs to protect principal. These bonds are below investment grade, and the fund fell 12.5% in 2022 before a 14.5-month recovery.
- Investors wary of small funds. Net assets were about $63 million as of August 31, 2026, the smallest of the eight similar funds compared.

Questions investors ask
Does HYDW pay monthly dividends?
Yes. HYDW pays income every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $2.59 per share, a trailing yield of 5.6%. The money comes from interest on the junk bonds it holds, which had an average coupon of 5.83% as of August 31, 2026. Payments can change from month to month. They can also fall if issuers default or if the fund reinvests at lower yields.
What's the difference between HYDW and HYLB?
Both are DWS Xtrackers high-yield bond ETFs. HYDW keeps only lower-yielding bonds within each sector, while HYLB is the issuer's broader high-yield fund. HYLB costs 0.05% a year against HYDW's 0.20%, and it is far larger, with about $3.56 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, HYDW returned 2.8% over one year against HYLB's 1.6%. Over three years, HYLB was ahead, at 8.7% a year versus 7.9%.
Is HYDW safe for retirement income?
Not in the sense of being free of losses. HYDW holds below-investment-grade bonds, so issuers can miss payments or default. The fund fell 17.7% during the 2020 COVID crash and lost 7.88% in calendar 2022. Day-to-day swings have been mild, with volatility of about 4% over three years as of October 27, 2026. Even so, some retirees use this kind of fund as one income source within a broader mix of investments.
What does low beta mean in a high yield bond ETF like HYDW?
Here, beta measures how much a bond's price moves with the overall high-yield market. HYDW's index keeps only bonds that yield less than their sector's median, because lower-yielding bonds have tended to move less. The trade-off is that the fund gives up some yield to aim for steadier prices. The prospectus warns that there is no guarantee the approach will actually reduce volatility compared with the broader high-yield market.
How much does HYDW cost per year?
HYDW's expense ratio is 0.20%, according to its prospectus filed December 18, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, which assumes $10,000 invested and a 5% yearly return, total costs would be about $20 after one year, $64 after three years, $113 after five and $255 after ten. That ranks second-cheapest among eight similar funds, whose average is 0.50%. DWS's own HYLB is cheaper, at 0.05%.
