How it works

GVUS tracks the Russell 1000 Value 40 Act Daily Capped Index, which FTSE Russell owns and calculates. The index takes companies from the Russell 1000 Index and keeps those with lower price-to-book ratios (share price compared with the company's accounting net worth), slower past sales growth and lower forecast growth. As of December 1, 2025, it held 870 stocks. They ranged from about $956.3 million to $3.9 trillion in market value. Stocks are weighted by free-float market value, meaning company size counted only on shares available to the public. So the biggest companies count the most.

The "40 Act" in the name refers to diversification rules in the Investment Company Act of 1940. At each quarterly rebalance, companies weighing more than 4.5% can make up no more than 22.5% of the index combined. No single company can exceed 22.5%. A daily check keeps companies above 4.8% at no more than 24% combined. As of August 31, 2026, Amazon was 6.1% of the fund, Apple 5.6% and Microsoft 5.0%. The top ten holdings made up 28.5%.

Goldman Sachs tries to hold index stocks in roughly the index's weights, but it may hold a sample instead. The fund does not drop a struggling company unless the index does. Portfolio turnover was 11%.

What it really costs

  • GVUS charges 0.12% a year, versus an average of 0.1% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $12 in the first year and $154 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleCore holding

It holds 856 large and mid-sized US value stocks for 0.12% a year, so it can anchor the value side of a US stock allocation.

GVUS launched on November 30, 2023. It was not around for the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 15.8%, from November 29, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It got back to its old high by July 3, 2025, about 2.8 months after the low. It has not had a losing calendar year: it returned 14.1% in 2024 and 15.9% in 2025. That short record says little about a long bear market, when a retiree drawing income might have to cash out shares at low prices. The trailing 12-month yield was 1.46% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Under the SEC's standard example, costs would be $12 in the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want 856 large and mid-sized US value stocks, led by Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and JPMorgan Chase, in one low-turnover index fund.
  • Long-term holders who accept a 0.12% expense ratio, below IWD's 0.19% for a similar Russell 1000 Value portfolio.
  • Investors who want modest quarterly income along with growth; the trailing yield was 1.46% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: Vanguard's VONV has 96% holdings overlap with GVUS and charges 0.07% a year.
  • Investors who want a long record: GVUS launched in November 2023 and has not been through a full bear market.
  • Those wary of small funds: at $417 million as of August 31, 2026, GVUS is the smallest of its peers and had $25.8 million in net outflows over three months.

Questions investors ask

What does GVUS invest in?

GVUS holds large and mid-sized US stocks with value traits. It tracks the Russell 1000 Value 40 Act Daily Capped Index from FTSE Russell. As of August 31, 2026, it owned 856 companies, almost all US-based. The largest were Amazon (6.1%), Apple (5.6%), Microsoft (5.0%), JPMorgan Chase (2.5%) and Berkshire Hathaway (2.5%). Technology (16.8%) and financials (16.1%) were the biggest sectors.

What is the GVUS expense ratio?

GVUS charges 0.12% a year, according to its prospectus filed December 29, 2025. That is a little above the 0.10% average for similar funds and ranks 6th of 9 on cost. Under the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), costs would be about $12 after one year, $39 after three, $68 after five and $154 after ten years.

Does GVUS pay dividends?

Yes. GVUS pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.97 per share, a trailing yield of 1.46%. The payout depends on dividends from companies such as JPMorgan Chase, ExxonMobil, Johnson & Johnson and Chevron, so it can rise or fall. Investors looking mainly for high income may find this yield modest.

What's the difference between GVUS and VONV?

The two funds are very similar, with 96% holdings overlap, and both are built around the Russell 1000 Value. The main differences are cost and size. VONV charges 0.07% a year against 0.12% for GVUS. VONV had about $23.9 billion in net assets against about $417 million for GVUS, both as of August 31, 2026. VONV's one-year return was 29% as of October 30, 2026. GVUS's was 26.6% as of October 27.

How has GVUS performed since it launched?

GVUS has gained every full calendar year since its November 2023 launch. It returned 14.1% in 2024 and 15.9% in 2025, and was up 24.2% for 2026 year to date through October 27. Its one-year return to that date was 26.6%. Its deepest drop was 15.8%, from November 2024 to April 2025, and it recovered by July 2025. That is a short record, without a full bear market.
