How it works

ERTH tracks the MSCI Global Environment Select Index. MSCI builds it from the MSCI ACWI Investable Market Index, which covers large, mid-size and small companies in developed and emerging markets. To get in, a company must earn at least 75% of its revenue from six themes: alternative energy, energy efficiency, green building, sustainable water, pollution prevention and control, and sustainable agriculture. MSCI also uses its own ESG (environmental, social and governance) ratings to judge each company's commitment to these themes. Once in, a company stays as long as that revenue share does not fall below 60%.

Holdings are weighted by free float-adjusted market value. Bigger companies get bigger weights, counting only shares available to the public. MSCI caps any single stock at 5%, though weights can drift between index reviews. As of June 30, 2026, the index had 173 companies, ranging from about $261 million to $4.8 trillion in market value. Invesco uses full replication, which means it buys essentially every stock in the index at its index weight.

The index can include REITs (real estate investment trusts), and as of April 30, 2026, the fund had significant exposure to the real estate and industrials sectors. ERTH is a plain stock fund, with no leverage or options.

What it really costs

  • ERTH charges 0.65% a year, versus an average of 0.42% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.5% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.03% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $66 in the first year and $841 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

ERTH is a narrow, volatile theme fund that has seen deep and lasting losses, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a foundation.

ERTH could add global exposure to clean energy, electric vehicles and green real estate, but its history has been rough. The fund's figures don't cover the 2008 crisis. In the 2020 COVID crash it lost 23.79% in the first quarter, then ended the year up 51.62%. It fell 31.1% in the 2022 bear market, and 2022 was its worst calendar year, at −27.08%. Its deepest drop was 51.7%, from November 2021 to April 2025, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who has to sell in a slump like that could lock in large losses.

The trailing 12-month yield was 2.01% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Costs of 0.65% a year are above the 0.42% peer average. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a small global slice of clean energy, electric vehicles and green buildings, with about 38% in US stocks as of July 31, 2026.
  • People who prefer strict rules: a company needs 75% of its revenue from six environmental themes to enter the index.
  • Long-horizon holders who can ride out deep drops, like the 51.7% fall from November 2021 that hadn't recovered by October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-conscious investors: the 0.65% expense ratio was the highest of seven similar funds, against a 0.42% peer average.
  • Retirees who may need to sell in a downturn: the fund lost 27.08% in 2022 and another 13.21% in 2024.
  • Those wanting broad ESG exposure at low cost: DSI (0.25%) and USCA (0.07%) share little of ERTH's portfolio and charge far less.

Questions investors ask

What does ERTH invest in?

ERTH holds global stocks of companies that earn most of their revenue from environmental themes, following the MSCI Global Environment Select Index. As of July 31, 2026, it had 174 holdings. The largest were Digital Realty Trust (5.3%), BYD (5.2%), NVIDIA (4.7%), Tesla (4.0%), Vestas Wind Systems (3.8%) and First Solar (3.2%). The top 10 made up about 35% of the fund. US stocks were about 38% and Chinese stocks about 12%.

Is ERTH good for retirement?

ERTH is better described as a small, higher-risk add-on than a core retirement holding. It lost 27.08% in 2022 and 13.21% in 2024. Its deepest drop, 51.7% starting in November 2021, had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. It does pay some income, with a 2.01% trailing yield as of that date. Anyone who may need to sell shares during a downturn may find swings this large hard to live with.

Does ERTH pay dividends?

Yes. ERTH pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.83 per share, a trailing yield of 2.01%. Payouts come from the dividends of the stocks it holds, including REITs such as Digital Realty and Weyerhaeuser, so the amount can vary from quarter to quarter. A trailing yield shows what was paid in the past, not a promise of future income.

What's the difference between ERTH and SMOG?

Among the similar funds compared, VanEck Low Carbon Energy ETF (SMOG) overlaps most with ERTH's holdings. SMOG charges 0.61% a year, compared with ERTH's 0.65%. As of October 27, 2026, SMOG returned −1.1% over one year and 13.4% a year over three years. ERTH returned −13.4% and 3.5% over the same periods. ERTH's index also covers green building, sustainable water and REITs, which gives it significant real estate exposure.

What is ERTH's expense ratio?

ERTH's expense ratio is 0.65% a year, according to its prospectus filed August 27, 2026. That is the highest among seven similar funds, which average 0.42%. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $66 in the first year, $211 over three years, $373 over five years and $841 over 10 years.
