How it works

CGDV does not track an index. Capital Group's managers pick stocks, aiming for income above the average yield on US stocks plus long-term growth. At least 80% of assets go into dividend-paying stocks, judged partly on dividend yield and history. The fund mainly owns larger US companies with market values above $4.0 billion. It ordinarily keeps at least 90% of its stock holdings in companies rated investment grade, a sign of relatively low credit risk, or judged equivalent by the adviser. Up to 10% can go to larger companies based abroad.

Capital Group splits the portfolio into segments, each run by a different manager. The managers look for attractively valued companies with good long-term prospects and drop holdings that no longer look attractive. Position sizes reflect their judgment, not a formula. Turnover, the share of the portfolio replaced over a year, was 24%, according to the prospectus filed July 31, 2026. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held 52 stocks, with 42% of assets in the top 10.

Shares trade on an exchange at market prices that can differ from net asset value (NAV), the per-share value of the holdings. The fund uses no leverage, held no derivatives as of August 31, 2026, and pays dividends quarterly.

What it really costs

  • CGDV charges 0.33% a year, versus an average of 0.24% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $34 in the first year and $418 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

CGDV$34$106$185$418

In a retirement portfolio

RoleCore holding

It held 52 large, mostly US companies across many sectors as of August 31, 2026, so it works more like a broad stock fund than an income fund.

CGDV's record is short. It launched February 22, 2022, so it missed the 2008 and 2020 crashes and the start of the 2022 market slump. Its deepest drop, 21.8%, ran from March 29 to September 30, 2022; it regained its prior peak on June 2, 2023, about eight months after the low. Its three full calendar years were all gains, the weakest 20.1% in 2024. Anyone drawing money during a slump like 2022 would have had to cash in shares at lower prices.

Income is modest: the fund's quarterly dividends over the past 12 months added up to 1.22% of its share price as of October 27, 2026. Under the SEC's standard example ($10,000 earning 5% a year), costs come to $34 for one year and $418 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future ones, and any plan needs to consider the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want an actively managed mix of large, mostly US dividend payers, led by Microsoft, NVIDIA and Broadcom as of August 31, 2026.
  • Those who like a credit-quality filter: at least 90% of stock holdings are normally in companies rated investment grade or judged equivalent.
  • Long-term investors who can ride out drops like its 21.8% fall in 2022, which took about eight months from the low to recover.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees needing sizable dividend income: the yield was 1.22% as of October 27, 2026, modest for a fund with "dividend" in its name.
  • Cost-focused investors: its 0.33% annual expense ratio exceeds the 0.24% average of similar funds and Vanguard Mega Cap ETF's 0.07%.
  • Investors wanting a traditional dividend fund heavy in utilities and staples: as of August 31, 2026, technology was 31.6% of assets; utilities, 0.9%.

Questions investors ask

Is CGDV good for retirement income?

It provides some income, but not much. CGDV paid $0.60 per share in dividends over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, a yield of 1.22%, with payments made quarterly. The fund targets both income and growth, and its holdings lean toward large technology companies rather than high-yield sectors such as utilities, which were 0.9% of assets as of August 31, 2026. Retirees who need larger dividend checks may find it light; it may suit those who mainly want growth with some income.

What's the difference between CGDV and CGUS?

Less than you might expect: their portfolios overlap by about 64%, per the funds' latest SEC holdings reports. Both CGDV and Capital Group Core Equity ETF (CGUS) are run by Capital Group and charge 0.33% a year. CGDV's mandate centers on dividend-paying stocks and an income goal. As of October 27, 2026, CGDV returned 15.2% over one year and 26.2% a year over three years, versus 11.4% and 23.8% for CGUS. Vanguard Mega Cap ETF (MGC) overlaps 43% and charges 0.07%.

What are CGDV's top holdings?

As of August 31, 2026, CGDV's largest holdings were Microsoft (7.6%), NVIDIA (6.3%), Broadcom (4.7%), Meta Platforms (4.3%) and Alphabet (3.6%), followed by Royal Caribbean, Oracle, RTX, General Electric and Comcast. The top 10 made up 42% of assets across 52 holdings. Technology was the largest sector at 31.6%, then industrials at 13.9% and communication services at 10.4%. That is more tech-heavy than the "dividend value" name might suggest.

What is CGDV's expense ratio?

CGDV's expense ratio, the annual fee taken from fund assets, is 0.33%, all of it management fee, according to its prospectus filed July 31, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would incur $34 in costs over one year, $185 over five and $418 over 10. The 0.33% fee is above the 0.24% average of similar funds; Vanguard Mega Cap ETF (MGC) charges 0.07% and iShares Russell Top 200 ETF (IWL) 0.15%.

How has CGDV performed since launch?

It has gained in each of its three full calendar years. Per its prospectus, CGDV returned 17.76% a year on average from its February 22, 2022, launch through December 31, 2025, with calendar-year returns of 28.83% in 2023, 20.11% in 2024 and 25.51% in 2025. It was up 13.6% from the start of 2026 through October 27, 2026. The ride wasn't smooth: it fell 21.8% from March to September 2022 before recovering by June 2023. Past returns don't predict future results.
