How it works

Brookstone Value Stock ETF is actively managed: rather than tracking an index, its adviser picks the stocks. Normally, at least 80% of net assets are in U.S. stocks, including ADRs (certificates representing shares of foreign companies). The prospectus compares results with the S&P 500 Value Index, but the fund does not copy it.

The adviser screens small, mid-size and large companies with a market value of at least $1 billion. It weighs company reputation, growth and valuation estimates, relevance to investors and third-party financial ratings. The aim is high-quality value stocks: shares priced low relative to earnings or assets. The prospectus gives no fixed weighting formula or rebalancing schedule; the adviser may sell holdings that no longer look reasonably priced or perform poorly. Turnover, the share of holdings replaced in a year, was 94%; trading costs come on top of the 0.86% yearly expense ratio.

Value stocks cluster in some sectors, so weights can be lopsided. As of May 31, 2026, the fund had 98 holdings, with financials (26.4%) and technology (18.3%) the largest sectors. Microsoft was 8.3%, ahead of Cisco (5.5%), Bank of America (4.6%) and JPMorgan Chase (4.4%). It used no derivatives or leverage. Shares trade on the Cboe BZX Exchange, sometimes above or below the value of the holdings.

What it really costs

  • BAMV charges 0.86% a year, versus an average of 0.25% for the similar funds below (8th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.65% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $88 in the first year and $1,061 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

RoleDiversifier

This value-tilted stock fund had a one-year beta of 0.62, so it could sit alongside a broad U.S. stock core, but its short history and high cost make it a poor fit for the core itself.

BAMV launched on September 27, 2023, so it was not around for the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 14.5%, from November 29, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It got back to its old high by July 3, 2025, about 2.8 months later. Its weakest calendar year, 2025, still returned 7.7%. Someone drawing cash during that dip would have taken a 14.5% loss, but a record this short says little about how the fund might hold up in a deep bear market.

Income is modest: the trailing yield was 1.25% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. Cost stands out more. At 0.86% a year, the SEC's standard example puts costs at $1,061 over 10 years on $10,000. Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) charges 0.04%. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a manager hand-picking U.S. value stocks, with large stakes in financials (26.4%) and technology (18.3%) as of May 31, 2026.
  • Those seeking a value tilt that moves less than the overall market; its one-year beta was 0.62 as of October 27, 2026.
  • Investors willing to pay 0.86% a year for active stock picking with 94% turnover, accepting a record only back to September 2023.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) charges 0.04% and iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (IWD) charges 0.19%, compared with BAMV's 0.86%.
  • Income seekers: the trailing yield was 1.25% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, which is modest for a value fund.
  • Those who want a long record: BAMV trailed the S&P 500 Value Index from launch through December 31, 2025, and has never been through a bear market.

Questions investors ask

Is BAMV good for retirement?

It depends on the role you have in mind. BAMV is an actively managed U.S. value stock fund. It may suit retirees who want a value tilt next to a broad stock fund. The drawbacks: its 0.86% expense ratio is the highest of eight similar funds, its yield was 1.25% as of October 27, 2026, and it dates only to September 2023. Its deepest drop was 14.5%, and it recovered in about 2.8 months.

What's the difference between BAMV and GMOV?

GMOV, the GMO US Value ETF, costs less and has done better over the past year. Of the funds compared, it shares the most holdings with BAMV, about 38%. GMOV charges 0.50% a year against BAMV's 0.86%. Over one year to October 27, 2026, GMOV returned 25.5% and BAMV returned 12.6%. The two are similar in size: GMOV had about $107 million in net assets as of August 31, 2026, and BAMV had $102.4 million as of May 31, 2026.

Does BAMV pay dividends?

Yes, BAMV pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.46 per share, a trailing yield of 1.25%. That income comes from the dividends of the stocks it holds, such as Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Verizon and Cisco. The fund's goal is capital appreciation, not income, so investors mainly looking for cash payouts may want to compare it with funds built around dividends.

What is BAMV's expense ratio?

BAMV's expense ratio is 0.86% a year, which includes a 0.65% management fee, according to the prospectus filed September 24, 2026. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested, a 5% yearly return and shares cashed in at the end of each period. On that basis, costs come to $88 after one year, $477 after five years and $1,061 after ten. The average for the similar funds compared is 0.25%.

How has BAMV performed compared with the S&P 500 Value Index?

It has trailed the S&P 500 Value Index. According to the prospectus, BAMV returned 7.69% in 2025, while the index returned 13.19%. From launch through December 31, 2025, the fund averaged 14.74% a year, compared with 17.71% for the index. Based on price, BAMV returned 12.6% over one year to October 27, 2026, and 14.4% year to date through that date. Over one year, that ranked last among eight similar funds.
