How it works
ARKW does not track an index. ARK's managers pick the holdings. At least 80% of assets go into US and foreign stocks tied to what ARK calls the "next generation internet": computing moving to the cloud, mobile services, online retail, streaming, big data, digital payments and blockchain. It also covers the "internet of things," meaning devices that share data over a network without a person involved. The managers start "top down," estimating how big a market could become. Then they work "bottom up," studying each company's valuation and finances. They consider ESG (environmental, social and governance) factors but do not exclude companies because of them.
The fund is concentrated. More than 25% of its assets sit in internet information providers and online and mail-order retailers. As of July 31, 2026, it had 43 holdings, and the top 10 made up about 48% of assets. The largest were Tesla (7.5%) and AMD (7.4%). Holdings also included SpaceX (3.4%) and OpenAI preferred stock (2.6%). The prospectus sets no weighting formula or rebalancing schedule; the managers decide position sizes. Portfolio turnover was 44%.
ARKW gets its crypto exposure indirectly, through a Cayman Islands subsidiary that can hold up to 25% of total assets and buys crypto funds. One example is the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF, at 4.9%. That exposure can change over time. The fund held no derivatives as of July 31, 2026.
What it really costs
- ARKW charges 0.76% a year, versus an average of 0.46% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.75% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $78 in the first year and $942 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ARKW | $78 | $243 | $422 | $942 |
In a retirement portfolio
ARKW is a concentrated, actively managed bet on internet, fintech and crypto companies, and it has fallen much harder than the broad market in downturns.
ARKW could add a small, focused stake in internet and fintech growth companies alongside a broad core fund. Its losses can be severe. In the 2020 COVID crash it fell 40.7%, but it was back at its peak by May 19, 2020. In the 2022 bear market it dropped 64% and did not regain its January 2022 level until January 30, 2025. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -67.49%. Its deepest drop, 80.5% from February 2021 to December 2022, had still not been recovered as of October 27, 2026. The fund launched in 2014, so it has no 2008 record. Anyone forced to sell shares in a year like 2022 would lock in steep losses. It pays a distribution once a year (a 1.5% yield as of October 27, 2026), so it is not an income fund. On the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $78 in the first year. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting a small, manager-picked stake in internet, fintech and crypto-linked companies such as Tesla, AMD, Robinhood, Shopify and Coinbase.
- People who can hold through deep drops, like the 64% fall in 2022 that took until January 2025 to recover.
- Those who want some indirect bitcoin exposure, such as the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF position, inside a stock fund.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-conscious investors: the 0.76% expense ratio compares with 0.20% for Invesco QQQ Trust and 0.04% for Vanguard Growth ETF.
- Retirees who may need to sell in a bad year; ARKW lost 67.49% in 2022 and its 80.5% peak-to-trough drop remained unrecovered.
- Income seekers or ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) holders: ARKW pays once a year, and about 56% of its holdings overlap with ARKK's.

Questions investors ask
Is ARKW good for retirement?
ARKW is a high-risk fund, so it is more likely to play a small supporting role in a retirement portfolio than a central one. It lost 67.49% in 2022, and its deepest drop, 80.5% from February 2021 to December 2022, had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026. It has also had big gains, such as 157.08% in 2020. Someone who may need to sell shares during a downturn could lock in large losses.
What's the difference between ARKW and ARKK?
Both are actively managed ARK Invest funds, and about 56% of their holdings overlap based on the latest N-PORT reports. ARKW focuses on internet, cloud, fintech and crypto companies, while ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) takes a broader innovation theme. Costs are almost the same: 0.76% for ARKW and 0.75% for ARKK. As of October 27, 2026, ARKW returned -11.7% over one year and 47.2% a year over three years, against -6.1% and 35.5% for ARKK.
Does ARKW pay dividends?
Yes, but only once a year, and income is not its goal. The fund's stated objective is long-term growth of capital. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $2.35 per share, a trailing yield of 1.5%. Investors who want regular monthly or quarterly income would need to look at funds built for that purpose. ARKW's payout can vary widely from year to year.
What are ARKW's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, ARKW's largest holdings were Tesla (7.5%), AMD (7.4%), the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (4.9%), Robinhood (4.6%), Shopify (4.5%), Amazon (4.4%) and Alphabet (4.1%). Block, Circle Internet Group and Coinbase each made up about 3.4% to 3.6%. The fund had 43 holdings in total, and the top 10 accounted for about 48% of assets. That makes it much more concentrated than a broad index fund.
Does ARKW own bitcoin?
Not directly. ARKW gets crypto exposure through a wholly owned Cayman Islands subsidiary. The subsidiary can hold up to 25% of the fund's total assets and invests in crypto funds and exchange-traded products. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF at 4.9%, plus crypto-related stocks such as Coinbase and Circle. The prospectus warns that crypto exposure may change over time and that its tax treatment is uncertain in some respects.
